perhaps the most underrated (by the media) wideout in college football is Boise State's outstanding senior,
Matt Miller.
in Boise State's most recent outing, Miller broke the school's all-time career receiving record previously held by 2011 third-round NFL Draft pick Austin Pettis, totaling 8 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown.
he tied Pettis’ record with career catch No. 229 on a 44-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, and he then broke the record with No. 230 on a 37-yard reception on the next drive.
Miller set the Boise State single-season receptions record last season when he had 88 catches for 1,140 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he's been a model of consistency since debuting at Boise State as a freshman in 2011. he’s the only player in school history to post three consecutive seasons with at least 60 catches, 675 yards and 5 touchdowns, and he’s on pace for a fourth.
i think Miller compares quite favorably to Pettis. Current Broncos head coach Bryan Harsin, who was the offensive coordinator during Pettis’ entire career, also sees
many similarities between the two.
Bryan Harsin said:
“They’re no different as far as how smart they are,†Harsin said. “Pettis was a guy that I didn’t worry about. He was dialed. … They’re both big guys, go up and make plays. They both understand what they are doing and spacing on the field. There’s a whole lot more similarities there, when I start watching more Matt and remembering how Pettis played. And they’re equally competitive. There’s not a whole lot of separation in those two.â€
their similarities go beyond the mental and competitive aspects of the game. physically, they are very similar, as well (aside from their skin tone, that is). at the 2011 Combine, Austin Pettis measured in at 6-foot-2-and 1/2-inches, weighed 209 pounds, and ran a 4.56 in the 40. Miller is officially listed at 6-foot-3, 213 pounds, and ran a reported 4.5 in the 40 coming out of high school.
with the lion's share of the season remaining, barring injury Miller will shatter every major receiving record in Boise State history. he is only 241 yards shy of the all-time yardage record set by Titus Young.
it will be interesting to see if the NFL treats Miller in a similar fashion as it did Pettis, who was not only a Combine invitee and 3rd-round Draft pick, but who also remains on the St. Louis Rams roster. i have my doubts, due to the Caste Sytem's methodology. but Miller is certainly an NFL talent.
