It's not really helpful to say "Puerto Rican" when trying to figure out the racial/ethnic background of an individual. It's case by case. It been comforting to see that in the wake of the “Aaron Hernandez is a serial murderer” situation, New England hasn’t impulsively signed and/or traded for a new tight end. Following an off-season that saw the lily-white squad draft seven negroes and zero whites, coupled with the infuriating departure of both superstars Wes Welker and Danny Woodhead, I’ve noticed a rather positive turn of events of late over the past month…

1) Following his untimely back surgery and multiple infection-related complications with his right forearm, the NFL’s most dominant overall player at any particular position, Rob Gronkowski, might very well be ready for Week #1.

2) TE Jake Ballard is healthy and running with the starting unit in minicamp following a season lost to an ACL tear. Hopefully, he assume Hernandez’s role, flanked by a healthy Gronkowski.

3) The 6’ 7” TE, Zach Sudfeld, is apparently turning plenty of heads during off-season workouts and should make the squad as a reserve to Gronkowski and Ballard…

Zach Sudfeld, an undrafted rookie out of the University of Nevada, was hard to miss during Patriots offseason workouts, and not just because of the long, blonde hair flowing from the backside of helmet. He emerged as several tight ends shared reps in the absence of both Rob Gronkowksi and now former Patriot Aaron Hernandez, each of whom was limited this offseason as they recovered from their respective surgeries.

Sudfeld stood out as a natural pass catcher with a big frame (6-foot-7, 260 pounds) to match it. He displayed the movement skills to be an "F" tight end, something Hernandez excelled at given his athleticism.

It's short-sighted to make hardline judgements based on offseason workouts, as the sessions weren't even conducted in pads, but Sudfeld has at the very least arrived on the radar, as was evidenced by colleague Mike Rodak predicting his chances of making the 53-man roster at 65 percent in today's Bubble Watch entry.

4) The two portly non-white backup TE’s, Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui, are primarily blocking specialists with little to offer in the passing attack. It’s unlikely that either will contribute more offensively than they did last season (combining for 9 catches)…

5) Yesterday, ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss (the NFL’s premiere beat writer who is very fair to white players) stated the following concerning Julian Edelman’s chances of emerging as the #2 receiver…

“I think Edelman is the team's No. 2 receiver on opening day if he is healthy. I also wouldn't undersell his athleticism and speed. Naturally, losing part of the offseason as he rehabs his foot wasn't ideal, but I think one of the main things he has going for him is a trust built up with Tom Brady and a knowledge of the offense. If he's healthy on the opening day of camp, I think he'll quickly elevate to close to the top of the depth chart.”

Should New England start (or heavily feature) Brady, Solder, Mankins, Wendell, Connolly, Vollmer, Gronkowski, Ballard, Edelman, and Amendola, they’ll be even more worthy of our support than the extra-European Denver Broncos.

Unfortunately, DE Rob Ninkovich is the lone white starter defensively, as FS Steve Gregory seems to have been supplanted by the everlastingly-burned former “star” cornerback, Devin McCourty. Following an undeniably-great rookie campaign in 2010, McCourty was so god-awful at CB that he was moved to safety in order to better hide his supernatural incompetence with concern to covering receivers. Too much cocoa-butter, perhaps?

Bequette was drafted in the 3rd round in the 2012 draft. He had good production in college and tested out well athletically but was considered a bit raw.

That is what upsets me the most is that he was arrested BEFORE he was drafted, and the Pats took him anyway.I also read that the judge said he could serve his time after the 2013 season but this might make him reconsider. The Pats are doing the complete opposite. They used to take underrated White guys and turn them into top players, now they are gambling on thugs who fall for their behavior off the field, or in the case of Haynesworth and Blount, on the field as well. Its the opposite of their winning formula, its what the Bengals and the Raiders have done. They get rid of Woodhead who is fast, could carry a huge workload and keep the plodding Ridley, and then get Blount who is even slower, although he has power and can be a great runner, is LAZY. Tim Tebow could be the featured back but the Pats are keeping him at QB from what I hear. I have read that they are trying out defensive guys to play tight end. That is good news, because I have a prediction, if they do that its probably going to be a White guy.

The only plausible explanation for the talented, yet habitually-injured Edelman to be championed as a likely candidate for the starting “X” receiver role is that rookie WR, Aaron Dobson (2[SUP]nd[/SUP] round draft pick), and free agents Michael Jenkins and Donald Jones, haven’t shown much proficiency in the role thus far. Dobson, who has been injured during mini-camp, actually flashed some talent while at Marshall, but he seems like a Grade-A Bonehead of the DeSean Jackson genotype who is unlikely to grasp New England’s complicated offensive scheme, particularly in his first season…

I think it would be fun if we ever got to see a set out of the Pats where Tebow and Edelman are both in the backfield. Both can play Quarterback, both can run, both can catch, Tebow can certainly block if needed. Like a shotgun set where either one could receive the snap. Last season, Brandon Lloyd started at the “X†receiver, Deion Branch started at “Y†receiver, and Wes Welker started at “Z†receiver in the slot.

This year, all of those players are gone. Michael “Molasses in January†Jenkins is set to start at the “X†receiver. Danny Amendola is, of course, set to start at the “Z†receiver. Despite his injury, Julian Edelman is supposedly being considered for the “Y†receiver role, a position he played heavily in December of last season. Who could forget his 56-yard touchdown against the Jets on Thanksgiving?

The other outside receiver spot: Who emerges?
With Danny Amendola locked in to play the slot, and likely as part of most two-receiver sets, as well, there is a big question as to who might be the No. 3 receiver. Five-year veteran Julian Edelman, if healthy, is a leading candidate. But he was placed on the physically unable to perform list (recovering from foot injury). Rookies Josh Boyce (toe) and Kenbrell Thompkins figure to get a long look, while third-year player Kamar Aiken and former Tennessee Titan Lavelle Hawkins are also in the mix. This one is wide open. It's one of the few competitions that we could envision going in several different ways. It's also a spot that takes on added significance with the Patriots' tight end depth chart significantly shortened by the injuries to Rob Gronkowski and Jake Ballard and the release of Aaron Hernandez. Will the Patriots rely on a three-receiver set more than planned instead of the preferred two-tight end formation?

With Donald Jones mysteriously cut before camp, Edelman will be competing against two rookies (Boyce and Thompkins), smurfette Kamar Aiken, and the ever-so average Titan castoff, Lavelle Hawkins. Should New England actually start Edelman and Amendola at WR, along with any combination of Gronkowski/Ballard/Sudfeld at TE, their offense would be every bit as exciting as their 2011 campaign in which Gronk and Welker had 1,000-yard seasons and Woodhead contributed heavily at RB. Edelman will allegedly begin training camp (which starts Friday) on the PUP list, but I’ve read that he shouldn’t miss much time.

By being placed on the PUP or non-football injury/illness lists, the players cannot practice with their teammates but can work out with the team’s trainers.
They can be removed from the lists at any time during training camp.
Seeing Gronkowski and Edelman on the PUP list isn’t a surprise. Gronkowski is five weeks removed from back surgery to repair a herniated disk, which generally takes 12 or more weeks to rehab. The bigger decision will come before Week 1, when the team must decide whether to keep Gronkowski on the PUP list. If they do, it will keep him out for the first six games of the regular season.
Edelman, who will need to take a bigger role in the offense this season, is coming back from a broken foot suffered in December. The Patriots are likely just being cautious by placing him on the PUP list.
Ballard is still struggling to come back from a torn ACL suffered in the Super Bowl in February 2012. Even after missing the entire 2012 season, Ballard still is hobbled by the knee injury and looked a bit stiff during the team’s offseason workouts. Many people assume Ballard will help replace Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, but he must prove that he still has good mobility and that his knee can hold up.

Something positive:

Danny Amendola has reportedly been the "one bright spot" in the Patriots' receiver room so far.

Per the Boston Globe, Amendola is "clearly the most polished receiver on the field." Beat writer Ben Volin says that if the ex-Ram plays all 16 games, there's "little reason" to think he won't top 100 catches this season. Given Amendola's role in the slot, the inexperience at "X" and the Pats' troubles at tight end, the 112.0 catches per season Wes Welker averaged as a Patriot is an extremely realistic goal. Amendola has a WR1 ceiling.

There is a common perception that like Wes Welker, Amendola is essentially a pure slot receiver. While his quickness and size does suggest that, there are aspects of Amendola's game that give reason to believe he could be effective on the outside.

Make no mistake, Amendola is more of a Z receiver. But if he can hold up at outside receiver on occasion, that would allow the Patriots to put their best receiver personnel on the field in three-receiver sets.

That's because fifth-year veteran Julian Edelman is more of a pure slot receiver, though a fairly accomplished one in limited reps. As Field Yates of ESPNBoston notes, Brady has placed special attention on catching up Edelman, who recently came off the PUP list:

Early in practice, the quarterbacks and offensive skill players take part in a "pat-and-go" drill in which a quarterback pats the football, signaling for the skill player to run down the field before he arcs a throw to him. Tom Brady, perhaps as a preservation method, would throw to the first two receivers in line, then allow an assistant equipment manager to throw to the remaining receivers, except Edelman. Brady, who has always spoken highly of Edelman's work ethic, stepped up to throw to Edelman when he was up in the drill.

Personally, I feel as if they could both play on the outside, but as long as they are both on the field together, any pro-white fan should be satisfied...

Gronkowski out practicing today, overcoming back surgery, a broken forearm that got infected but no, hes not some supa afflete that heals fast, even though those two things (a setback due to infection plus back injury) would be extremely hard to overcome in a short period. A misleading title to the article but this problem started the moment the Patriots dissed Welker and sent him packing. Actually, this problem started at the beginning of last season when the Patriots benched Welker for no reason other than to de-value him before negotiating with him after the season ended. Injuries to several WR's & TE's forced the Patriots to play Welker and he had an outstanding year.

So when Danny A. goes down, as he probably will for some amount of time, the POS Patriots can watch Welker and the Broncos in the Super Bowl and Kraft can count the million bucks he saved in his living room.
