Kansas City Chiefs General Thread

Andy Reid has been lavishing praise on Perine and expects him to play in the opener. We'll get a better idea of his role and Carson Steele's on Thursday. Meantime Edwards-Helaire is still sidelined, presumably with his PTSD issue.

I'm not surprised. Last season they brought back Jerick McKinnon at the last minute to do 3rd down back stuff. Perine is not a bad back, I think that Steele will be better, and he can do a lot more. Like you said, we'll just have to wait and see.

Edwards-Helaire's rushing yards have dropped in each of his four seasons since being a first round pick -- 803, 517, 302, and 223. That includes a puny 3.2 average yards per rush last year. And a supposed receiving threat, he has but 765 yards total over those same four seasons.

It was a surprise when the Chiefs re-signed him as he was clearly a bust even before his personal issues became known. Hopefully he's a non-factor all season even if activated later on.

I find it curious in this day and age that a team would keep a player almost as a charity case. As you document above, he has not been very good. He was a healthy scratch for many games last year in addition to missing pretty much the entire preseason. From the mythical "best players play" position there is no way he should be on the team, it's like Reid feels sorry for his issues or somesuch. It is baffling. That said, his being out is a very good sign for Steele as Pacheco isn't going to be in for every play and Perine can only be in for limited plays considering his playbook knowledge.

Pacheco is “being evaluated for an ankle injury” which could mean he gets less snaps next week or even doesn’t play. That would be big for Steele.

Pacheco left the stadium on crutches with a boot. Next week might be the Steele show, but if Pacheco misses the game, expect a veteran RB signed to patch Steele snaps

Andy Reid stills seems high on Steele and isn’t worried about his fumbling problems and will learn from it. This little prick reporter tries to fact check Andy and say he did have a fumbling problem in college with 8. Steel had 648 total carries his college career. I’m not a math guy but 8 fumbles out of 648 carries doesn’t seem like a problem. it kind of looks like a concentrated effort by these little bastards to get the white guys benched for one or two fumbles.

I'm locking this thread temporarily as there is a 2024 Chiefs thread, which is what we should be posting on now. Same for the other 31 teams. The general threads are for use in the offseason or until a write-up is done for the new season.

Maybe the Chiefs shouldn't be in such a hurry to Caste aside Justin Watson. They draft a receiver with mouth watering upside early every year, and every year they turn out to be busts, injured, or arrested. Worthy charged with "assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation." That used to be called choking, now it's merely "impeding breathing or circulation."

Xavier Worthy was arrested Friday evening in Williamson County, Texas on domestic assault charges. Worthy has been charged with assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation. The 21-year-old will face serious consequences from the criminal justice system and could also face a possible suspension from the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy once the legal process unfolds. We’ll have additional updates and more information on this story as it develops.

Here's every WR the Chiefs have drafted since 2017. Stop me when you see one who's lived up to his draft status:

2024: Xavier Worthy, first round, currently an expert on "impeding breathing or circulation."
2023: Rashee Rice, second round: decided to go drag racing on an interstate highway, then casually walked away after crashing; missed '24 season after incurring a knee injury in Week 4.
2022: Skyy Moore, second round. Who?
2021: Cornell Powell, fifth round
2019: Mecole Hardman, first round, bust
2018: Tremon Smith. Who?
2017: Jehu Chesson. Who?

And of course the Chiefs also signed the Giants' first round pick/colossal bust Kadarius Toney, but as with the others good ol' Andy Reid wasn't able to unleash Kadarius's "amazing upside."

There's a bit of hope for Carson Steele after Perine signed with the Bengals:

Will Carson Steele Elevate Into Chiefs’ Third-Down Role in 2025?

With Perine leaving and McKinnon having aged out of the position, the Chiefs need a new third-down guy in 2025. Now, maybe Mitchell will have a shot at that role, or perhaps a draft pick claims it later this summer, but there is an interesting option already on the roster.

That’s Steele, who displayed good hands and awareness as a pass-catcher during his rookie campaign.

Steele finished with just 7 catches (off 11 targets) for 26 yards in 2024, but he made a few notable snags throughout the preseason too. At minimum, expect Steele to be involved in the third-down competition at running back.

Chiefs are going all-in on blackness for 2025 so far. The only remaining cracker on the offensive line is center Creed Humphrey. And Mahomes thought he had it bad last year, wait until this one! Also the lone white (and last reliable one) WR just flew the coop. Justin Watson signed with the Texans yesterday, not sure if it's a good move or not.

All of that aside, with Matt Nagy running the offensive ship expect less this year than last. For those who think that Mahomes is just an average QB I say that is ridiculous. The fact that he's been able to get this team to the SB the last two years with the offense taking on water like it has under Nagy says otherwise.
