Looks like pro hockey's relentless drive to "diversify" the sport is reaping poisonous dividends:
Three minor-league hockey players arrested for sexual assault in Reno
Three members of the Santa Rosa Growlers minor-league hockey team were arrested over the weekend before a game with the Reno Ice Raiders.
According to a Washoe County Sheriff's Office booking recap, 34-year-old Dominic Jones, 30-year-old Josiah Nikkel and 33-year-old Moses Matthews III were arrested by Reno Police Department officers and booked into the Washoe County jail just after 3 p.m. last Saturday on sexual assault charges. All three remain in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to the sexual assault charges, Matthews drew two additional charges, including unlawful dissemination of an intimate image, a law created in 2015. Intimate images are defined as any recorded image, such as a photograph, film or videotape, that depicts (a) The fully exposed nipple of the female breast of another person, including through transparent clothing; or (b) One or more persons engaged in sexual conduct. He also was charged with capturing an image of a private area of another person, which is illegal if not given the consent of the other person and when the other person has reasonable expectation of privacy.
The Santa Rosa Growlers were in Reno last week for back-to-back games with the Ice Raiders on Friday and Saturday. The three players were arrested before Saturday's 8 p.m. puck drop. Both games were played as scheduled, with Santa Rosa sweeping the contest. The Ice Raiders are in their first season in Reno after moving from Vacaville, Calif., and play at the Reno Ice facility in South Reno. The team is a member of the Mountain West Hockey League, a semi-pro organization.
Blake Johnson, the team's captain, said in a news release Wednesday afternoon the players have been dismissed from the roster. The players traveled to Reno on their personal time a day before the games and were involved in the incident Thursday night, Johnson said.
“We the Santa Rosa Growlers, want to express our deepest sympathies to the victim of a crime that occurred in Reno last weekend,” Johnson said. “Finding the right words for this is nearly impossible. We’re still trying to gather any information and process it all ourselves. The team was not informed of the incident or details prior to our first game on Friday and we regret that these players were allowed to play for us that evening. We as a team and a club do not take sexual assault or any of the charges lightly and this news is both shocking and deeply concerning for all parties involved and their families.”
