As for Leo's point about Trubisky my general rule of thumb on white athletes declaring is very conservative. In the case of Christian Mac after three great seasons he is ready and roaring to go. Plus the general public is fully aware of him and he will be ready to contribute day one. As for a highly rated QB like Trubisky , who will likely declare, I actually think it would be better if he stayed at NC one more year. Wide receiver Proehl will still be there. He would likely raise his national profile through the roof and people will see an athletic white QB in their living rooms every week and Heisman talk etc. If he jumps he might be holding a clip board for a year or two and that doesn't help the cause here at caste much at all. The key, and this goes for basketball players too, is national exposure whatever the level .We want national audiences seeing white athletes excel and for many white football and basketball players they would get a lot more positive exposure if they stayed in college. And if anything waiting just a bit longer will help their pro careers in the long run. Sure it is always nice to see white guys announced as first round picks come draft day but to me exposure is more important in the long haul.
Like I mentioned I will be reading the NFL draft posts here but won't chime in until the combine because I want to concentrate on the NBA, college basketball , tennis ( Australian Open soon) and maybe some hockey.
That said it looks like four WR's will be invited to the combine. Switzer and Kupp are virtual locks and Trent Taylor was just invited so that leaves Hansen as a possible fourth WR combine invite . Is there a fifth one lurking? I doubt it but we can always hope.
But back to Christian Mac for a second. I think he will perform well at the combine but he is real important. He is the first star white pure running back ( no half ass fullback mix here) to be talked about in ages. He also has rightly been out spoken about how white athletes are often unjustly perceived as stiffs so his future success will do wonders for young white athletes down the road. They will have a "white" athlete to look up to and emulate just like Larry Bird back in the day. So more and more white kids will say to themselves 'I don't want to be the kicker or quit sports I want to shine at a skill position just like Christian Mac'.
I do sense ( can't get too optimistic) a slight resurgence of the white running back at the college level in the next few years but as C Mac as the point man that number could spike. Even at the pro level the last few weeks we have seen Zenner and Burkhead get a chance ( albeit through attrition) and perform well.
This will be a very important combine to say the least.
