Another talent screwed in that same era you might recall was Gary Wellman, a 5' 9" sprinter out of USC, who was drafted in the 5th round by Houston in '91. He finally got to play in the second half of the '93 season and was instantly the best receiver on the Oilers. And this was at the height of the "Smurf" mania when Warren Moon was racking up huge passing yardage. Wellman was uncoverable and Moon to his credit looked to him often. He had 31 receptions for 430 yards as a non-starter over the latter part of '93. Like Query he was "rewarded" with but 10 receptions the next season and then was out of the league.Wellman also was 27 when no NFL team found him worthy of employment.
The utter screwing of very talented and capable White players has a long and sordid history in the NFL. As I've mentioned before, the early to mid-'90s, when Query and Wellman played, was the absolute low point (so far at least) for White receivers.

wow. i don't recall ever hearing of Wellman before, so i went and looked him up to see how fast he was ... and this is what i found:

Interesting to hear jeff query mentioned. he had a pb of 4.27 elec. 40. He was a model for brad lamb from anderson (IN) to run like. both of these guys have the curse of great speed and not great coordination, which is why the 40 yard dash is useless for a pass catcher. if i were a coach in a non caste nfl i would rather see them play cornerback

I think accusing Query and Lamb of being uncoordinated is a bit unfair. Query in particular looked pretty coordinated to me and had decent hands. Lamb did drop a few balls - but no more than many receivers making a pretty good living in the NFL today. Perhaps Lamb would have made a good DB.

I remember when I was about 21 years old and I was coming back from some training in a bus for my Texas Army National Guard Unit, I had one of those small portable hand held TV's with me and a very large and tall Black seargant was sitting next to me watching Jeff Querry return a punt for the Packers and he commented on how extremely fast he thought Querry was and on how tough,accurate and great Troy Aikman was. Jeff Query from tiny Millikinwas in the same class in the NFL Draft Class asDon Beebe tiny Chadron St/Woodhead!)...I actually think Query was faster than Beebe...though some would argue claiming Beebe was the fastest white man in NFL History(yes I realize he was clocked at 4.21)...maybe in the 40...but not the >100< where Deion Sanders easily caught him on a long kickoff return from way behind....it would not have been as easy to catch Query who looked plenty coordinated to me...JMO
They actually did a special segment on Query & Beebe as the two fastest players in the draft...LOVED IT! Query was a little thin back in the day at 6'-0 165lbs...
I remember Gary Wellman...fun to watch! FAST too! Former HS RB.....Came outnear the same time withUSC tailback Scott Lockwood who got the royal treatment in the NFL with the Patriots...Thought USC WR-Erik Affholter drafted 89' Skins...only played one season(Packers 91')would have had a more sucessful NFL career...bad dude in college...can't remember if he had health issues are a skin condition problem??
There are 32 NFL Teams...there needs to be at least 32 white WR's...glad to see Amendola(like Lance Long)get his chance...in my limited time seeing him this year...he did drop a BIG pass that could have gone a long way late in game vs Saints...eventhough Saints are my favorite team..hated tosee him miss that BIG opportunity...he almost caught the game winning pass at the end that just missed.Edited by: TwentyTwo

Affholter was royally screwed.I can think of acouple of other very talented White receivers who were screwed over in the same era. Sean LaChapelle broke most of the UCLA receiving records that were later broken by Danny Farmer. But he wasn't drafted until the 5th round in '93 by the Rams and had 2 receptions for them that year. His only other NFL action was in '96 with the Chiefs, when he stepped in (because of the injury bug of course) and played very well, catching 27 passes for 422 yards in limited action the second half of that season. His reward was to never catch a pass again in the NFL.
Todd Kinchen out of LSU was a 3rd round draft pick in '92, also by the Rams. He was fast and had great hands but ended up with just 164 career catches. Played 7 seasons in the NFL, with 4 different teams. Was treated as the typical junkyard dog by the league.
The list of White receivers screwed by the NFL is very long and ever growing.

There is a well proven incidence of those with great speed not having great coordination to match, which is interseting in the relationship that exists between the two.
Also it proves the fact that a 40 yard time is not nearly as important as hand to eye coordination, which whites dominate and therefore should in a fair system, dominate the pass catching position.
as well, since this part is for american football i will leave this fact: cj spiller the running back, ran a 10.48 100m and went out in the semi finals of the ncaa 100m: so in the future when you hear some clown on nfl tv say he has world class speed and could be an olympic champion, remember its a lie and you heard the truth to that back on caste football.

Does anyone know if Jeremy Bloom ran the 100m in college? I know several scouting sites mentioned several years ago that he had world class speed. He ran much slower than what he was capable of at the combine for the 40.

Neat to hear about Jeff Query. I played safety at North Central College for four years and played DB on the opposite side of the field against him for 3. He was so darn fast. I remember some of the kids at our college had come up from Florida to play. They said,"yeah, he is pretty fast but we see lots of guys like that in Florida". Apperently not. I ran a 4.7 and felt like I was standing in molasses around him.
He was deadly on a fade and quick slant when we were in cover 2. We tried to hide it.
I do not remember him being that uncordinated, as one guy mentioned on the site. But then again, I have never played against other guys that played in the NFL for 4 years.

St. Louis writer calls Amendola "the best receiver in camp," but it means only that he is now a "lock to make the roster." Gee how nice. And so it goes for White football players.

Just think about it. Amendola was another guy that nobody wanted. Fat Bastard made sure to get rid of him quick before he had an opportunity to show his skills. Mardy Gilyard is another black bum who will become a bust.

The Rams who were/are a bad team and were desperate enough to give him a chance. My feelings on the average NFL GM's view on Danny was the Herm Edwards view on Amendola. When Amendola was tearing up an opposing team during the last pre-season game and Herm was asked on the broadcast if Amendola deserved to be an Eagle on Sundays and Herm dodged the question by asking if he was practice squad eligible. Until attitudes like that are wiped out of the league Amendola clones will have an uphill battle to make any team. Edited by: white is right
Amendola finally getting some respect, but of course no recognition of just why White receivers have to always travel the road they do, with most never getting an opportunity.

Welker became the primary kick returner for the Miami Dolphins in his rookie season and a contributing member of the offense his second season with 29 catches. He caught 67 passes in his third year and was traded to New England, where he developed into a Pro Bowl receiver with three consecutive 100-catch seasons.
After the Cowboys cut Amendola, he signed with the Philadelphia practice squad. Two weeks later, the Rams signed him to their active roster. Amendola went on to catch 43 passes as a rookie in addition to returning punts and kickoffs for the Rams.
Donnie Avery and Laurent Robinson figure to start for the Rams at wideout but, like Welker, Amendola will work out of the slot in the three-receiver packages. Neither Avery or Laurent is a true lead receiver, and the Rams don't have a proven tight end, so Amendola is going to get plenty of attention from Bradford on third downs on the inside routes.

Looks like Donnie Avery, the Rams #2 receiver, is out for the year after injuring his knee against the Patriots tonight. That will make Amendola even more valuable this season. They have no tight ends of note at this point -- Daniel Fells (black) is currently listed as the starter though Billy Bajema (White) may overtake him -- and it's easy to foresee Sam Bradford looking to Amendola often as his safety valve. He could end up with a lot of receptions in 2010.
BTW, Bradford looked darn good against New England in this game.

Does this mean Amendola will be the number 2 receiver? The CBS depth chart shows Mardy Gilyard ahead of Amendola for some reason despite the fact that Danny has been outplaying him this preseason.
Amendola is entrenched as the slot receiver.
If he stays healthy and the Rams offense isn't horrible, Amendola should have a big year as a receiver.

What about Kevin Curtis? If the Rams would sign him and he stayed healthy he would lead the team in receptions.

Sad to hear about Kevin Curtis, but I'm glad Danny Amendola is getting a legit chance to show what he's made of. Also, its nice to see something good happen to one of my White fantasy players!

Curtis would still put up very similar numbers to Donald Driver in an identical circumstance I believe (if healthy). However the NFL has very different plans for these "veterans" despite Curtis having an upside in age.
