Optimistically thinking, the move to Miami worked for Ward. He was considered a similar prospect as Beck last year. Like 4th or 5th QB pick off the board. If Beck can put up big numbers and lead Miami to a playoff spot, perhaps he can be QB1 in the 2026 draft.

Right, and or Cade Klubnik. Klubnik made huge strides this season. Looking forward to the Clemson/Miami matchup!

I'm surprised Beck picked a place so quickly. Hope it works out for him.
He's been banging one of the hot twins that plays women's basketball at Miami. I'm assuming/inferring that they have the same NIL agency and that he had a contract drawn up before putting his name in the transfer portal.

Because Beck had declared for the draft, it apparently isn't considered "tampering" by the letter of the law (whatever that's worth) because he was no longer a member of Georgia's team. He actually submitted his name to the official NCAA transfer portal with a "do not contact" designation. I'd never heard of that before; I suppose it was meant for players to use during exams (which they theoretically still take sometimes).

I saw an article that had Beck ranked as the Xth quarterback prospect this year, and last year, the Xth quarterback (Joe Milton) was drafted in the 5th round and signed for 4 yrs, $5.7 million. Beck's set to get $4 million for his one year at Miami.

As an aside: I have no idea what's included in these contracts. If Beck wants to spend his Sunday afternoon at the baseball card shop signing autographs for ten bucks a pop, is he then making $4 million plus ten? Is he just bound by his contract to do a set amount of appearances/ads/posts per year, and can rest assured that the bank will have $4 million in it at the end of the season? Can the NIL collective that's paying him sell his appearance fee to a company for $5 million if the offer is there and make a cool mill on the arrangement? I've never heard it discussed, so I don't think anybody knows.

Going down this rabbit hole, I found an article about how much money Beck is actually making, allegedly.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, who led the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoff quarterfinals where the team lost to Notre Dame, announced Friday he has committed to Miami, just one day after he entered the transfer portal.

Now his agents at ESM tell Front Office Sports Beck has secured close to $10 million in combined NIL (name, image, and likeness) deals in the past 12 months from a combination of his brand deals and money from the Miami NIL collective Canes Connection.

“With the expertise of ESM and the unwavering support of Carson’s longtime quarterback coach Denny Thompson, we have secured nearly eight figures in agreements over the past 12 months,” Dan Everett, a partner at ESM, tells FOS. “Carson’s partnerships with leading brands demonstrate his ability to connect with premium and national audiences.”

Beck’s brand partners include Beats by Dre, Powerade, Chipotle, and Airstar Charter.

Everett would not break down how much of Beck’s NIL money is coming from the collective as opposed to from Beck’s commercial deals. A different source close to Beck says that the $4 million figure widely reported Friday as coming from the Canes Connection is inaccurate and that the price tag is higher. Canes Connection declined to comment.
If Beck is getting more than $4 million from the Canes Connection, it would make him the highest-paid player in college football. Darian Mensah is reportedly getting $8 million over two years to transfer to Duke from Tulane, and John Mateer is reportedly getting a similar deal to transfer from Washington State to Oklahoma.

It's not transparent really and comes off like a press release from his agency (who wants to sign other clients, so would be motivated to embellish and round up). But it does clarify that the university collectives, which sort of behave like trusts and probably resemble "non-profits" (a small staff of admins that solicit donations from fat cats), are the ones making the offers we hear reported in the news. Players can seek out other advertising dollars elsewhere and negotiate with their personal agents.

I think these official university collectives try to build a portfolio of local businesses to use athletes in their advertising. It's part of the bidding war to show that you're organized for optimizing players' money. It's still unclear whether that factors into the bottom line - does Beck have to say, do a TV spot for "Augusta Auto" as part of the condition to get his 4 million, or is that the lump sum just for showing up? (obviously completely outside the spirit of "name, image, likeness rights")

The complete lack of regulations and transparency makes it a perfect environment for the (((you know whos))) to get into the NIL racket. Unregulated laissez-faire capitalism for me, socialism for thee, is their motto.

Sluka to JMU. He was the only player demonized by the media when the school did not pay him the NIL money promised. His mistake was not getting it in writing. A great case study in the differences between how White and black athletes are treated by the media and low IQ fans.

QB Holden Geriner to Texas St. I like this move and the Bobcats should be a team to watch next year with Joey Hobert, Lincoln Pare and Beau Sparks all on the offense.

Question: why would McNamara choose to play a seventh college season? Is he not good enough to declare for the draft? He is much better than the top(lol) 3 black quarterbacks being propped up for the draft.

McNamara was not that good. He was solid at his best but mostly underwhelming at Iowa. A disappointment of the transfer portal era for sure. The fact he had to drop down to FCS is pretty damning.

Noticed BCs Safety Cole Batson also opted to go FCS. Ends up at Cal Poly. You would think a Jumbo sized Safety @ 6’4 215 would be sought after.

Wisconsin also lost G James Durand to Western Illinois.6’5 300 and I believe he’ll be a Sophomore Redshirt. Could see him transfer back up in a year.

Also notice former Badger QB Cole LaCrue to Eastern Illinois! 6’3 220 dual threat.

Both those guys should at least be in the MAC!

McNamara eh, for a 7th year ETSU is probably his best bet.

I agree with @Leonardfan that McNamara peaked in 2021 and hasn't been regarded as a future pro for awhile now. Injuries have hurt his career, but his ego is not a non-factor here.

To answer your first question, I imagine that even FCS schools can scrape up $200-$500k for a rental quarterback. That's still a lot more than an NFL practice squad gig. ETSU has been lousy the past two years but made the playoffs as recently as 2021. They have a new coach who surely wants to make a splash.
