High Schoolers

Another 10th grader to keep an eye on is Mason Dossett of Missouri City, Texas. He's run the highs in a windy 13.66 (but has a 13.79 wind legal) and the intermediates in 37.79, simply smoking times for a sophomore. He has a pedigree. His father is Martin Dossett, who was a good sprinter and hurdler and wide receiver at Baylor. He later played with the Green Bay Packers for two seasons.
 
Two possible future decathletes are seniors Landon Helms of Emmett, Idaho, and Patrick Daves of Daphne, Alabama. Helms was a 9th grade prodigy who was hampered by injuries and the Covid lockdown in the 10th and 11th grades but this season already has personal bests of wind-legal 11.21, 22.77, 13.93, 39.34 and a 17'2" PV and a 21'10" LJ. Daves has personal bests of wind-legal 11.16, 22.45, 49.78, 13.70, 37.09, and a 6'4" HJ and a 21'5" LJ.

Mia Brahe-Pedersen raced again this weekend, and lowered her 100m PB again, this time down to 11.34!
Incredible!

She is a sophomore and she is running very good college times.

Unfortunately, Logan Popelka skipped the 100m and 200m at the Regionals, in the lead up to the State Championships.
However, he did run the 400m and won in a time of 46.99.
 
Charlie Sexton of Auburn High in Alabama ran a 10.15 100 meters today in the state's 7A prelims. Unfortunately, the wind was 4.1. It's worth noting, though, that second place was 3 10ths behind. Sexton is a senior and didn't start running track until his junior year.

thanks for sharing this. i think it fair to say Sexton has “dat upside!”

additionally, his windy 10.15 is an all-conditions record for the state of Alabama. he runs the 100m final on Saturday. i found the video to his race and shared it below.

 
What an amazing video. Look at two things. One the margin of victory. Second is that he is sprinting at a whole level of speed above everyone else on the track. Look
at his stride ratio. To think he is only in his 2nd year of track yet so much better than everyone else and I'm sure many have far more experience. All I can say is WOW! :)

WL, just listened to a short Bio on Sexton. He was a soccer player. Soccer is great for agility, quickness and foot work skills. I don't think I've ever seen a slow soccer player. If any of you are starting a family, put your kids in a good soccer program before any other sport. Jimmy Chitwood, don't you have your kids playing soccer? Anyway, both my boys played soccer early on and both were very fast. Sexton has signed to run for Auburn. Looking forward to his progress.

Sexton's story - played soccer and didn't start running track until his junior year - reminds me of Curtis Godin of California.
Godin played baseball, and didn't start running track until his junior year. As a senior he won the 100m California high school championship, and came this close to breaking the state record.
(He went on to UCLA and dropped out of their track program for reasons unknown)

yes, sir. my kids are still very young, but they all play soccer (as well as other sports). soccer provides EXCELLENT skill development for numerous near-universal athletic skills: sprinting/change of direction/cardiovascular fitness, passing angles/spatial awareness, defensive positioning, etc., and it does so with a minimal risk of injury.

As of today, Charlie Sexton is the Alabama State Champ in the 100m and 200m.
He ran 10.49 and 21.05 for the victories.
10.49 is a new Alabama Championship record.

Great news. Wish he took up track earlier but at least he will run in college at Auburn. Would hate to see him just play soccer with such great potential. I would
either do both or just stick to athletics. Amazing to be a double sprint champion down south with little experience and he has the white slow man disease. Haha.
Love to see these kids shut up all the haters out there! Congrats on a fantastic season to Charlie Sexton. :)

Mia Brahe-Pedersen won the 100m and 200m at the Oregon HS Championships last weekend.
Her time in the 100m was a wind aided 11.09 (3.2w)!!
That's the fastest high school time in the country this year (all conditions), and =7th fastest all-time (all conditions)
Her 200m time was 23.23 - 10th fastest in the country this year.

It bears repeating - she's a sophomore!!

Congrats to Mia Brahe Pedersen. She probably doesn't even have a drivers license yet. Who needs one when
you can run that fast! Wow is she gonna be a special talent!
 
Nice to see 5 0f the 8 finalists in this race were white. She had a slow start but seemed to accelerate at 50-60m when she sensed the girl beside her then it was light a turbo kicked in. She has speed like MB Sant did in high school and maybe faster, hses a speedster for sure.
 
Cade Flatt, who we mentioned during the indoor season, is the top 800m runner this season.
He recently ran 1:46.51, which is the 2nd fastest time ever for a high schooler, falling short of the record by .06.

Flatt is oozing with talent and confidence, and hopes to take down the record by season's end.
 
Tyler Floyd, a junior sprinter out of Seattle Prep HS in Washington, is one to keep an eye on. Yesterday, he won the state 3A championship in the 100, 200, and 400 in wind legal times of 10.52, 21.01, and 47.13. His 100 and 200 times were personal records but earlier in the season he ran the 400 in 46.84. I can't recall when I've seen a swept like that in state championship competition. He's a tall, lanky kid (listed at 6'3" and 175 lbs.) and is a star wide receiver on Seattle Prep's football team.
 
Mia Brahe-Pederson, a sophomore, ran 11.36 at the Nike National HS Championships.

Cade Flatt ran 1:46.48 just missing breaking the National High School 800m Record of 1:46.45 by 3/100ths of a second!
