Here's another good article on Hogan. With Amendola going on the PUP list and Edelman used a lot in the slot, Hogan could have a huge season, as this writer astutely notes:

Chris Hogan is different than what the Patriots are used to and exactly what they need

by Stephen White

If you are looking for Patriots offseason acquisition wide receiver Chris Hogan to come in and be a Julian Edelman/Wes Welker type, let me stop you right there in your stereotyping tracks.

Yes, Hogan is a white receiver like Edelman and Welker, but that's about where most of the similarities end. He's actually 6'1, 220 pounds, so he's much taller and bigger than those other guys. He's also much more of a true outside receiver who is probably going to run more go routes than crossing routes this season.

With his former team, the Bills, Hogan was a third or fourth receiver. Yes, he lined up in the slot at times, but that wasn't really his bread and butter. In New England, where he has a better chance of starting, he will likely fill the role of what the Patriots wanted Brandon LaFell to be when they signed him a couple years back.

When he is not running go routes, you will probably find Hogan blocking the piss out of a DB in the running game. The dude really gets after it, and he has the size to actually make a difference as a blocker at the position.

Hogan caught 41 balls and had four touchdowns with the Bills in 2014, so he's already had some success in the league. I think those numbers will pale in comparison to the numbers he puts up with Brady this year. Mind you, Hogan started only two games in 2014. He started four games last year and caught 36 balls with two touchdowns. What he showed in those limited opportunities was a knack for getting open and some pretty good hands.

Hogan has a good understanding of how to keep working in different windows underneath when the ball doesn't come to him initially, which also makes him perfect for that Patriots offense.

Considering how much attention opponents are going to have to show the middle of their defense with tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett hauling ass up the seams, Hogan is likely to see a ton of one-on-one coverage outside. Taking that into consideration, I fully expect all of his numbers to take a huge jump, including and maybe especially his yards per reception average. If he can stay healthy, Chris Hogan may actually end up being one of the better deep threats in the league this year.

Yeah, I know some of y'all are reading that and chuckling under your breath. Just remember, laugh now, cry later, and we will revisit this at about the midpoint of the season.

I think this maybe the first opportunity Hogan gets to start opposite Edelman. Amendola is coming off an injury and might be the 3rd receiver. I can't remember the last time any team had 3 starting white receivers.

Very nice quote from Brandon Marshall about Chris Hogan: “He is a monster. That’s the type of guy I want on my team. That guy can play ball.”

Formerly one of the most vile thugs/screw-ups during his younger days in the NFL, Marshall seems to have really turned his life around in the past 2-3 years. He's founded multiple charities, gives speeches to kids, is married to (and has 2 children in wedlock with) a black woman, gives anti-Caste commentary on TV, and seems to train extremely hard. He and teammate Eric Decker might be the best 1-2 punch at WR in the league.

Chris Hogan is averaging an astonishing 20.6 yards per reception, which is better than Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, AJ Green, Odell Beckham, Amari Cooper, Marvin Jones, any other #1 WR in the game. Watch how he effortlessly scorches former 1st round pick (10th overall), Stephon Gilmore, in yesterday's game. Chris might be the fastest receiver the NFL and it's becoming quite clear that no black DB's can run with him...

Gilmore is one of the best CB's in the league and ran a 4.38-second 40 yard dash a few years back. Hogan ran a 4.39.

Chris Hogan caught a 79 yard pass from Tom Brady against the Ravens. It's clear from this play that Hogan has excellent speed.

Whenever you're confronted with the slow white guy stereotype point out that it is a racial stereotype and that many white men are fast. Make sure to point out that it's a racial stereotype.

The most damaging circumstance that the Caste System could encounter this season would be for the Pats to reach the SB and for Hogan to "get loose" on a long TD like he did last night. It would be a nightmare for millions of DWFs to watch the fastest WR, who happens to be white, torch black DBs...

There are plenty of NFL players who ran "fast" 40-times, but only a handful are true burners with pads and a helmet. Of the starting WRs, guys like Chris Hogan, Brandin Cooks, Will Fuller, Tedd Ginn, DeSean Jackson, and Jordy Nelson are noticeably faster that everyone else. Little used backup WR's such as Marquise Goodwin of the Bills and JJ Nelson of the Cardinals are also clearly faster than their peers, but aren't good WR's.

As mentioned in another thread, Hogan currently has the 2nd highest average yards/catch in the NFL this season. 2nd is Gronkowski.

No question the optics of the deep speed white WR running for daylight leaving behind the burnt rubber of a black CB is a glorious eye opener for the masses. Obviously a tire blew on the Ravens D on the 79 yard pass to Hogan. Typically, unless it is a close sideline pattern , CB's are expecting help down the middle of the field. Hogan is the Pats deep guy so the CB is expected to stay near him for 25 to 30 yards or so but eventually the safety has to provide help. CB's cannot be expected to cover the deep wide outs like Hogan the entire field nor should they since it is nearly impossible to stay with a receiver like Hogan that long. On his 53 yard TD pass early in the year against the Bills the CB was pissed because the safety did not get over the top in time. The CB gets a lot of the blame but in truth the safety is the key guy on the deep balls. Back in the day speedster safeties like Cliff Harris and Nolan Cromwell were crucial to stopping deep passes. Today there are more zones so safeties do not have to be a fast and athletic as those two guys. When I was watching a highlight reel of Jordy I noticed a lot of his long TD's were slants and crossing patterns. He gets the step on the CB and because of his speed and cutting ability the safety is either wrong footed or can't get a good angle and from there Jordy turns on the afterburners (and how) to the end zone. Rarely do you see Jordy go directly over the top on a deep pattern. The reason is simple. The D is set up to stop that first and foremost because they no damn well the CB can't stay with him 50 yards down the field so the safety hovers in that zone to prevent it.

We know about Miami cutting Hogan and Buffalo under utilizing him each season he was with the Bills. I didn't realize the 49ers cut him as well. Maybe some other teams too. . .

Edit: Just checked and Hastings is White. SF kept the wrong overachiever, though it's highly likely Hastings didn't receive much of an opportunity to prove himself.

49ers once cut Chris Hogan, the Patriots’ new star wide receiver

by Daniel Mano

Who would you rather have, Chris Hogan or Joe Hastings?

Hindsight is 20/20, of course. But Hogan has performed much, much better than Hastings since the 49ers picked the latter over the former on cut day in 2011.

And that’s even before Hogan’s breakout performance Sunday in the AFC Championship Game, in which he grabbed nine passes for 180 yards.

Hogan has caught 125 passes for 1,639 yards and 10 touchdowns while Hastings appeared in one game in 2011, was targeted once and has not caught an NFL pass. Hastings is now a wide receivers coach at Michigan.

The either-or situation in 2011 was detailed on KNBR by Sacramento Bee reporter Matt Barrows.

“This was 2011, and the 49ers definitely had a spot on their roster for an undrafted wideout,” Barrows said. “Throughout the course of training camp, this one guy keeps making big plays. It was Chris Hogan, and everybody who was watching those practices thought you could pencil this guy (Hogan) for making the 53-man roster, he’s gonna be a great story.

“On cut down day, Chris Hogan gets released and the 49ers keep Joe Hastings instead. Chris Hogan is still in the league and Joe Hastings isn’t, which proves my point that the reporters, under a lot of pressure in national and sports circles, know more than the talent evaluators on these NFL teams.”

Gets frustrating the average wimpy DWF on those message boards puts Hogan in the slow white WR category even though he has run 4.39..eventhough he continues to burn the brutha's on the regular...

Do most NFL Teams implement a "Max of One White WR Allowed Rule" on the 53 man roster? It would almost seem that way...with the exception of the Patriots, Packers & Vikes next season(Thielen/Boehringer; possibly the Lions if they keep Billingsly & Abbrederis?))

>Actually one look no further than the HS Recruiting Services....according to one major Service...ONLY 2 White WR's in the ENTIRE Top 100 in Class of 17'.....Oliver Miller Ranked #7 (still uncommitted) & #76 Austin Williams (Miss St. Commit) ....Have a hard time believing ONLY TWO Caucasian WR makes the list of 100.....PATHETIC!!! Need to get Deion Sanders on this...we'd just be labled racist.....

So looks like the NFL will continue to have to find gems at the likes of Monmouth, Kent, Minnesota-Mankato, Eastern Washington & Walk-on's from Kansas State( even Germany) that sneak thru the cracks...that are NO WHERE to be found on Top Recruiting List...Having to Defy the Odds!

His speed will be hard to explain by the anti-whites promoting their usual anti-white agenda.

Pretty nice article on Hogan from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. The only "caste speak" in when the writer compares him to Wes Welker when the two players couldn't be more different (aside from their hair, eye, and skin color). Edelman says that he's "so fast" in the article, which is cool. Also, I didn't know that Hogan's fiance is expecting twins next month. Great news!

For sure! Just think he's not even 100% with his quad issue...& still managed 180 yards receiving vs Steelers...we all know he's a major league vertical threat!

Thanks Trashen...wish his new family nothing but the best!

DWF's can't stomach the success Hogan is having. To them guys like Hogan,Amendola and Edelman are averge and only having success because of Brady. I think both sides compliment each other. Its no coincidence Brady is still playing at a high level at his age. Older qbs need smart players. Dan Marino wishes he had guys like Edelman and Hogan when his career was winding down. I hope Hogan wins SB MVP.

This could easily go in the Tom Brady thread, but given how the Caste System has marginalized qualified White receivers for two generations now, it's going here:

Pro Football Focus (PFF) looked at the quarterbacks that had the most success targeting any given route and New England Patriots QB Tom Brady featured as the best quarterback at a pair of routes that require impeccable touch and timing. Brady finished as the #1 quarterback in PFF’s ratings, so they’re a big fan of his 2016 season.

Brady finished the season as PFF’s best deep ball quarterback, thanks to the emergence of WR Chris Hogan as the deep threat that Patriots fans have clamored for over the past decade.
Hogan finished as PFF’s best go route receiver in 2016. Brady trailed Falcons QB Matt Ryan in passer rating on go routes, but attempted 48 passes to just 29 by Ryan.

No player had a longer journey to Superbowl 51 than Chris Hogan. When he first entered the league, there was only one website (Caste Football) that noticed how special he was and we mentioned him constantly. Six years later, he's the NFL's most dangerous deep threat (playing with the best QB of all time, in the league's best offense), he's a millionaire, and he's soon to be a father of two. Good to see a white alpha male winning at life!

This is a very fair analysis that highlights Hogan's great combination of size, speed and athleticism. I don't like the trade for Brandin Cooks, but we'll have to see how the New England offense shakes out this year. Wouldn't it be something if Hogan put up Jordy Nelson like numbers and Rex is used as the main ball carrier?

Chris Hogan has the athleticism to become a big-play, breakout receiver in 2017

The Patriots have made some big signings this season, making them very difficult to project for season-long purposes. How will that backfield shape up? Is Brady about to have a career year or even a record-breaking one? Or maybe they’ll run the ball another 300 times and rely on efficiency in the passing game rather than volume.

We assume Gronk is going to be Gronk. Edelman will likely stay in the slot with Brandin Cooks operating on the outside, and Malcolm Mitchell and Chris Hogan will rotate in throughout the game. But what if we’re looking at this the wrong way?

Fantasy analysts try their hardest to make the best possible educational guesses, but unfortunately, no one is right all the time. The Patriots stood out to me because of their abundance of riches, and how most predictions about their passing offense involve only a few players. I agree with those predictions, but I’d like to propose an alternative possibility: Chris Hogan could be a fantasy WR1.

Seriously, I’m not trying to throw out another hot take. What I am trying to do is answer the question, “If we’re wrong with our projections and predictions, what would that look like?” To me, a big Chris Hogan season stood out as the most likely alternative to how analysts are currently projecting the Patriots receivers.

In his first year with the Patriots, Hogan finished with 38 receptions for 680 yards and four touchdowns. It wasn’t an amazing season, but it did involve some great fantasy weeks (as well as some total duds).

Hogan was also very involved in the Patriots’ championship run. His stat lines for the three playoff games were impressive: 4/95/0, 9/180/2, 4/57/0. Brady targeted Hogan twice during their game-tying drive in their historic Super Bowl comeback.

Hogan led the Patriots receivers, and tight ends in percentage of offensive snaps played with 80% (Edelman played 78%). Edelman appeared to miss a step this season, either due to injury or due to age, and at one point the Patriots were desperate enough at the position that they claimed Michael Floyd off of waivers. Hogan’s steady presence was critical to their success in 2016, and it isn’t inconceivable to think that he could be in for solid production this season.

Why Hogan?
Hogan didn’t have the typical career trajectory of an NFL receiver. After playing lacrosse in college, Hogan went undrafted and bounced around between a few teams before eventually landing on the Bills.

When his contract with the Bills ended, the Patriots snagged him up. Bill Belichick obviously saw something he liked in Hogan when the Bills played the Patriots in 2015 (signing him to a three-year contract), and his athletic profile should jump out to fantasy players.

At 6’1” and 220 lbs, Hogan possesses a 76th percentile size-adjusted speed score, an above average burst score, an 82nd percentile agility score and a 99th percentile SPARQ-x score per PlayerProfiler.com. Hogan’s combination of size and athleticism provides the Patriots with a dynamic weapon on the outside, and his 26.6% snap share playing in the slot is evidence that he is capable of flexibility on the field. While it’s hard to predict what Belichick will do each game, he certainly likes flexibility in his players.

It’s that flexibility that leads me to believe that if someone other than Edelman, Cooks or Gronk succeeds in that passing offense, it would be Hogan over Mitchell. Mitchell had a solid rookie season, but watching him made it clear that his talent is still very raw. He seemed to run a limited route tree compared to the other receivers on the team and earned only a 62.5% snap share during the year.

I expect Mitchell to develop into a solid role with the team, but I do not expect that to happen this year. If anyone other than Cooks, Gronk or Edelman is catching perfectly thrown passes from TB12 in 2017, I think it would be the athletic Hogan.

Conclusion
The point of this article is not to say, “Chris Hogan is a fantasy stud that everyone is sleeping on.” The point is to recognize that we can always be wrong in our analysis and that in knowing and accepting that we can be wrong, exploring how that could happen can be beneficial.

We spend so much time in the offseason thinking about the most likely outcomes for the upcoming season that if those predictions fail, we become slow to react or stubborn to change our outlooks. Analyzing alternative outcomes now can help us to recognize those outcomes should they surface later and check the inherent subjectivity of our predictions and the unpredictable nature of the NFL.

The problem with the Patriots (and by default Hogan) is the constant game plan adjustment made by Beeeelichek. One game Hogan is the go to, where the next we may see Burkhead given the rock 25 times. The only consistent is Gronk, and that's because he is otherworldly.

Edelman has been fed the ball consistently also. He's one of the most targeted WRs in the league.

Hogan may not be otherwordly yet but he's one of the best deep threats and can play anywhere on the field and produce, so if he keeps improving and keeps gaining Brady's trust, he could put up very big numbers for the season as a whole even if he has some games where he's overlooked with so many mouths to feed. Unless Brady's arm strength suddenly falls off, he could easily throw for 5,000+ yards and 45+ TDs this season.
