I was listening to a FOX NFL insider named Alex Marvez being interviewed on Clay Travis' show and they were discussing the Teddy Bridgewater trade. Marvez was saying that the trade happened because of Drew Brees and how he definitely has to retire this year because he's got nothing left in the tank, and if he doesn't retire the Saints might have to think about cutting him even if they would never want to do it. Bridgewater is coming in as the heir apparent to Drew Brees and he'll be the starter in 2019.
I was really caught off guard when he said that, because even though I didn't follow the NFL that closely last year I didn't remember hearing about Drew Brees falling off a cliff the way Peyton Manning did his last season. I seemed to remember Brees having a good season and the Saints making the playoffs. So just to be sure I went back and looked up his stats. 4300 yards, 23 touchdowns, 8 int, 104 rating, and he set the all time single season completion percentage record at 72%. How could anyone describe that as having an awful season?
Alex Marvez is a shameless propagandist who would make the talking heads at CNN blush. But unlike CNN nobody will ever call him out.
