2025 NFL Week 5

49ers take the lead with the doinked-in field goal.

Jones is really taking a beating tonight. Dude's uniform is all crumpled and worn down. He's walking hunched back to the bench. Being tended to on the sideline now.

This performance by Jones reminds me of how Farve and Elway used to get hit and ding up but always came back for more. Can only imagine the money he is making for himself. How is he not a starter but Tua and Bryce Young are? He's easily the best of the three that came out of Alabama.

Rams fail to convert on 4th down. 49ers win!

It's funny how I said this could be a statement game for CMC. A way of saying he's back in full form.

In reality it ended up being a statement game for Mac Jones. A statement on his immense talent, iron temperament, indomitable will, and unbreakable spirit.

So we get a healthy CMC and to balance things out we get the worst run blocking I've seen in... Forever? I don't think any running back would do well for the Niners. CMC looks good catching the ball, still seems dynamic - although he probably lost half of a step - so I don't think he's a part of the problem here. His backup did even worse.

49ers have no run blocking - that's quite obvious.
But also, without Bosa, they put almost no pressure on the opposing QB.
So without run blocking and pass pressure, I can't see them doing much in the playoffs - if they get there.

The 49ers defenders also can't or don't know how to tackle. In a game that went to overtime only two of the nineteen players on their defense who played in the game had more than 3 solo tackles -- Fred Warner and the rookie safety Sigle who both had 7. The others would mostly just bounce off ball carriers while Warner and Sigle were the only two who would actually try and wrap up. Warner in particular stood out as caring enough to do his job properly. Tackling, one of the most fundamental aspects of football, has been discarded by so many players and they get away with it while earning millions of dollars.

Mac Jones is the real deal. He is making himself a lot of money this season.

He is dynamic with the ball in space when he catches a pass. His quickness, speed and agility are there. Logic says if he gets a crease or even better a running lane he will make explosive plays running the ball as well.

I think CMC will still hit 1500 total yards. The run blocking isn’t great but he is a dual purpose back and at this point I’d rather see him extend his career and become utilized as a receiver a little more just to reduce the wear and tear on his body.

Don, I agree. The lack of fundamental skills in the current league is both laughable and frustrating. I blame poor coaching at all levels, primarily. These players should have been benched in high school for their lack of skills and yet they were exalted and recruited and carried poor skills with them into the pros. But because they can run fast in a straight line (which very rarely is a requirement in football) their lack of skills was excused.

He will definitely hit that mark. But his ability to make the HOF (which is going to be huge from a caste perspective) will be dependent on him securing two more 1000 yard rushing seasons.

He, like Mike Trout, is a case of what could have been even more than what is. Both are the absolute best at their positions when healthy but both have had such trouble with injuries. In McCaffrey’s case, this supports many DWFs and black notions that white men aren’t built tough enough to play running back.

Maybe Skattebo changes that narrative as he has quickly endeared himself to his team, coaches and most importantly, the media. He will get a fair shake.

Hopefully Shipley can get another opportunity.

I disagree that CM has lost a step, he is getting throttled most often as he gets the ball or is only a step into the run and is getting hit. His line is getting him beat-up each game. I doubt very much any back in the NFL including Henry would do well in that situation.

After last night's game, here's Mac Jones' current stats for the season:

As denoted by the chart, he currently leads the league in passing Y/G.

Stats aside, was anyone else in awe of his physical tools last night? The throws he was making, the zip on the ball, the accuracy. He looked like a veteran franchise QB out there. Not to mention his toughness. Even a lot of the DWFs are talking about him as the next Mayfield or Darnold.

concussions are no joke. science is just now beginning to (honestly) study the effects of traumatic brain injury, of which concussions certainly qualify.

as much as i enjoy Pierce’s talents on the field, having his brain leak out his ears because he bruised his brain on the AstroTurf too many times is a terrible price to pay.
