My draft analysis:
Teams like the Patriots, Chargers, Packers and Saints with aging HOF veteran QBs all decided to wait until very late or not address the position at all. The Pats selected Etling who was pretty decent at LSU considering LSU's offensive playcalling or WRs have not been very good for several years now. I believe he is the first LSU QB since Matt Flynn to be selected. With some solid coaching perhaps the Pats can build something with him like they did with Hoyer and Casell. The Chargers opted to ignore the position again and keep 2 mediocre black QBs lined up behind Rivers - Geno Smiff and Oafdale Jones. If they end up losing Rivers their season will be lost. I am pretty sure I criticized them last year for not selecting a QB either just as a developmental guy. The Saints seem to be high on Taysom Hill but based off his track record I do not think he is an NFL QB - he is a very gifted athlete but also has a scary injury history. Tom Savage is also on the roster - a guy who never got a total fair shake in Houston. The Packers decided to roll the dice with not just Hundley but also Deshone Kizer as backups to Rodgers. The Packers are no longer a team to have much of a vested interest in as they went through a purge this year and darkened up the offense even more. I will give some credit to the Pats for actually selecting a developmental QB with the tools and alot of collegiate playing experience. The Patriots, Chargers and Saints were all being heavily linked to Eraserhead by the draft "experts".
It was nice to see the Broncos avoid getting into the QB race since they have Keenum, Lynch and Chad Kelly all on the roster. I think Lynch really needs to grasp this opportunity to learn from Keenum and eventually beat him out. Same goes for Chad Kelly who I felt was criminally underrated last year before the Broncos made him Mr. Irrelevant. The Giants made a confusing move with drafting Lauletta after already having Davis Webb on the roster but again we can hope that one of these guys develops into the successor for the Giants.
On the positive side Baker Mayfield went to Cleveland and will displace Idler Arm sooner than later, Darnold becomes the franchise QB for the Jets and Sewerwater and his balky knee are on shaky ground, Allen goes to the Bills to become the eventual face of the franchise - I do not think he is ready yet but learning under McCarron is not a bad thing at all. Rosen is going to be somewhat forgotten in AZ - a very good QB on the field with a very unlikable persona off the field. The Steelers actually made a smart move and drafted Rudolph as Roethlisberger's potential successor and more than likely giving Dobbs the boot out of the league. On the negative side the media is already clamoring for the end of Flacco in Baltimore even though he has had a terrible collection of skill position players surrounding him. I would like to see Flacco have a great year and utilize Hurst and Andrews and then once Eraserhead comes in and predictably flops see the Ravens in rebuild mode in a few years while the excuses flow in as to why Jackson did not pan out. Luke Falk, Mike White and Alex McCough all go to black quarterback led teams and perhaps can cause some QB controversy in a year or two in Tenn and Dallas at the very least. Plantation Pete finally had to draft a white QB after Trayvon Boykin and Tavaris Jackson wore out their welcomes in the league.
Hopefully this draft will give the league some stability and depth at the QB position. I have yet to look at the 2019 draft prospects so I am unsure of how deep the class is.
