I'm sure the thinking was to get a black QB selected in the 1st round even if it was the last pick of the 1st round.
Agreed. I'm not really much of a conspiracy theorist but I do think there was some wheeling and dealing behind the scenes to make sure Lamar Jackson did not look stupid (a la Geno Smiff) by sliding out of the first round, which he most certainly would have had Philly not have agreed to trade down with Baltimore. That's why I'm rooting against Jackson even more so than other black quarterbacks because he is a black quarterback in the truest sense of the word. I have nothing against him on a personal level but the PC crowd that was pushing for him has been nothing short of sickening. It was even worse for me as a fan being that I'm from the Miami area (Jackson's hometown) so I had to listen to all the local shock jocks on sports radio pimp this kid like he was God almighty, and that the Dolphins MUST draft him. It made me want to puke every time some shock jock or DWF caller brought him up. You would have thought he was Joe friggen Montana.
Another point worth bringing up is that New England had 2 picks at the end of the first round and passed on Jackson both times, thus proving that Belichick's supposed "interest" in Jackson was all a ruse. Belichick knows this mental midget could not run his complex offense. I assume Adam Gase knew that as well since it's been reported after the draft that Lamar Jackson was never even considered. Gase runs a similar offense scheme that Belichick runs which emphasizes quick reads and accuracy, neither of which fits Jackson's skill set.
