BYU 6'2" 218lb true freshman dual-threat QB, Taysom Hill, replaces QB Nelson Riley and leads BYU on 96-yard TD drive against Boise St. But they gamble and go for two and miss it and will probably end up losing 7-6.

Hill looked great on that TD drive...excellent speed combined with very good power and sharp passing. He's going to cause some serious problems for defenses in future games.

for the third-straight game, Louisiana Monroe went toe-to-toe with a hyped power-conference opponent. on Friday night, the ULM Warhawks gave Baylor all they could handle before finally falling, 47-42.

the contest came after ULM knocked off Arkansas in Fayetteville and took Auburn to overtime at Auburn. the Baylor game took place at ULM's home field, and was an exciting shootout that lit up the scoreboard.

the Warhawks are led by the electrifying (to borrow a favorite commentator word usually reserved for black quarterbacks) dual-threat quarterback Kolton Browning. Browning's favorite target is wideout Brent Leonard, who leads the team in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. fellow White wide receiver Colby Harper is third on the team in catches (and fourth in yards).

in last night's game, Browning threw for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns, while running 13 times for 49 yards and another touchdown. Leonard had 8 catches for 72 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 rush for 5 yards. Harper had a team-high 82 receiving yards on 5 catches.

the Warhawks (what exactly is a Warhawk, anyway?) are fun to watch on offense ... and on Friday night were the first team i have ever seen to actually implement a system i've been talking about for several years: utilizing two dual-threat quarterbacks in the backfield at the same time.

ULM only used it for a handful of plays, but when quarterbacks Kolton Browning and Cody Wells were on the field together, the offense was incredibly effective running the zone read, with both QBs a threat to either run or throw the ball after the hand-off or fake. it was VERY fun to watch. and Baylor was completely unable to stop it. so it begs the following questions: 1) why didn't ULM run it more often? and 2) why don't more teams do this?

also, Baylor's quarterback Nick Florence put up HUGE numbers, throwing for 351 yards and 4 touchdowns (and 2 picks) while running 9 times for 55 yards. who needs Robert Griffin III?

Riddlewire is completely correct about Baylor's system ...

also i wonder, with both of these teams having incredibly productive quarterbacks, will either Florence or Browning be getting hyped as the best player in college football? of course, it's a rhetorical question, because we know the answer. :tape2:

Iowa's Mark Weisman already has 5 rushes for 54 yards and a 34 yard td. He did fumble but this cat has 4 tds in limited work. Im sure he will be moved back to battering ram status when the affeletes come back from injury.

Also Central Michigan's rb Saylor Lavalli already has a 1st quarter rushing attempt for 4 yards and Wisconsin's Jarred Abrederis looks to be healthy againa as he has 2 first quarter catches.

@Jimmy Chitwood: Thanks for the update/analysis of Louisiana Monroe......I have not seen them play and didn't realize their lineup was so white friendly.

Wow. Jared Abbrederis already has 4 catches for 130 yards and a td. Could this be the next coming of Jordy Nelson? They have similiar builds , speed and running ability.

Mark Weisman bowling over more Central Michigan defenders for his 3rd TD of the day! Weisman was the reason the Hawkeyes scored on that last drive. He's been blowing people over and trucking defenders all day. Weisman now sits at 27 carries for 218 yards and 3 TDs!!

/QUOTE]The problem that we have run into as a high school offense, not just using 2 guys capable of throwing, just zone read with the pass option is getting a penalty for having offensive lineman going too far down the field. It can get confusing because they block like a running play where it doesn't matter but there is still that pass option in there. One play we have is similar to the inverted veer , except the guy coming on the jet sweep has the option to pass down field. We usually run the sweep to the side where there is only one wideout, and he runs straight down the field. This helps stretch the defense vertically, as most of our plays just stretch them horizontally and rely on yac because none of our guys can accurately hit someone deep down the field that is close to the sideline, unless it is a rollout to that side but we don't do that being shotgun most of the time . Its a very complicated play for high school kids to get right, but when it does it works well. Since it is so complicated we don't run it often, well we run basically the same play quite a bit except without the pass option which usually confuses defenses if we had the pass option in there earlier, even if it was an incomplete pass. Id imagine college kids could get it down more but still would run into some problems occasionally.

Despite Weisman having the best performance for an Iowa runningback in several years, Ferentz will no doubt believe that he needs to get his "playmakers" back in order to salvage the season after this loss to CMU. Such is the mind of a Caste coach.

Rex Burkhead off to a tremendous start against Idaho State today. He has 3 carries for 79 yards, including a 61 yard TD run! Welcome back, Rex!

I hope they show the play somewhere because I missed it. Hopefully he can keep pumping out these big runs throughout big 10 play, lack of big runs is what he was criticized for last year, now he has 6 runs for 147 yards 2 tds with a 57 yarder and now a 61 yarder. Last year Martinez was much worse as a passer and not good on the zone read, his ankle or something was injured and just wasn't confident and would pitch or hand off even if the man he was reading was going for the back. Rex had small creases and carried the team. Now there is more balance, I just wish he had played the last 2 games, I am worried Abdullah will cut into playing time.

Maybe it's better right now if Abdullah does cut into Rex's time today; he did look a little gimpy on that knee yet. I'd rather Rex play against Big 10 teams rather than have him injured against Idaho State, in a game they're already up 35-0 in.

If Burkhead can get to 100 yds today I hope they pull him. The game is a blowout already. Just sit him and get him healthy.

Of course the only highlight of the Nebraska game that CBS shows during their halftime show is the 35-yard TD pass from Martinez to Enunwa. About as simple of a catch that can be made with no one near him and the announcer says "look at that catch!". No highlight of Burkhead's 61-yard TD run.

he looked gimpy? I only have a poor quality version

Im not talking about Abdullah cutting into carries this game, I am talking in the future, and that is what the talk has all been about. Like "they wanted to lessen the load of Burkhead but now they know they have a capable starter in Abdullah"

I say put him in for a few more plays if he feels okay, maybe he can break another big play and get 200, he is at 119 now, he needs to make up for lost time to be in any sort of race. Right now his best hope is the Doak Walker.

DWID, what is Burkhead's 40 time? Nfldraftscout has him as at a 4.48 at 210 lbs? Does that sound about right? I sure hope he can run a high 4.4 time at the Combine. He's the 7th ranked running back as well.

Great news about Weisman. Anyone know why Tyler Tettleton is not playing for Ohio?

Ohio Team Report Sep 19, 2012

There's no doubt who the starters are for Ohio at quarterback and in the backfield.

The question, this week, however is how much juniors Tyler Tettleton and Beau Blankenship will play when Ohio (3-0) faces FCS opponent Norfolk State (2-1) in Athens, Ohio, on Saturday.

Tettleton has been stellar so far in 2012 with passer rating of 156.27 (32nd nationally), seven touchdowns and no interceptions in his last 129 passes. Blankenship, the starter at running back, has been solid as well with 379 rushing yards an 88 carries in three games.

But both are battling injuries.

Ohio coach Frank Solich said both probably will see far less work than normal in practice this week. And, ideally, neither would be needed for a full workload against the Spartans on game day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blankenship, nonetheless, gets 109 yards on 25 carries and 1 TD.
Michael Zordich is looking good for Penn St. 72 yards on 13 carries with 44 receiving yards, had a decent game last week as well with 50 rushing yards and 25 yards receiving. Who knew that Penn St. had all of these White backs that could play well when needed? He averaged 4.5 ypc last week. Now he is at 5.1
Hunter Furr getting some carries for E.Carolina, who happens to be playing his former team (North Carolina) today. So far only 4-13 yards.
They say he runs a 4.5. I am not sure, he had an electronic 4.84 I think before he was a junior in high school, but can't find any listings after that, because his vertical at that time was 31 inches, now his vertical is 38 inches. Hopefully he can go sub 4.5, he will have to train for it. Nebraska emphasizes the 10 yard dash.
People cite the 4.8 time as him being slow but don't realize many star recruits run much slower than 4.5 electronically. If he had to run one today I would say 4.56 but I think he can get it down to 4.48 with better technique. He looks to be faster on the field than Gerhart who ran a 4.55 which is what really matters, speed on the field, but of course the 40 yard dash is somehow meaningful for White players at skill positions, they have to crack 4.6, with Burkhead being much lighter than Gerhart he would probably have to go sub 4.5. People don't realize there isn't much difference from 4.45 to 4.62, the odds of a rb getting to the second level and outrunning a db in the NFL for a big homerun with pure speed is about the same, the 4.45 doesn't have that much better of a shot than the 4.62 guy, you will have to have a mean stiff arm or something, usually someone has an angle on you and will catch up eventually, rarely do you see people outrun angles, even in college, although Matt Jones had no problem. Only Chris Johnson (4.24) was able to get 10 30+ yard touchdowns in his 2,000 yard season, before that the record stood at 6, set by Jim Brown and tied once by DeAngelo Williams. Id say for wideouts its different, some seem like they would be better in a 100 yard dash than a 40 yard dash, like Jordy Nelson 4.49 40 but can outrun guys who have timed faster, Riley Cooper is another example, 4.5 but you could see on deep routes and special teams he is running just as fast as someone like Demps who ran like a 10 second 100 meter dash.
