Harrell's back flares up, cause for concern

Considering Justin Harrell's injury history, his being held out of practice this morning has to be cause for more than the usual concern for an injured player.

The defensive end and former first-round draft pick sat out Tuesday morning's practice because of what coach Mike McCarthy described as "tightness"Â￾ in his lower back.

Harrell has missed most of the last two seasons because of the chronic disc problem in his lower back, and after a healthy offseason this is the first time the injury has acted up since the start of training camp.

All signs suggest the Packers were relatively optimistic Harrell could get through training camp healthy and be an effective rotational player this season, but this flare-up raises doubt. The Packers gave no indication of how much time Harrell might miss, and Harrell wasn't available for comment after the morning practice, though when he's had flare-ups in the past it's been the first sign of problems to come.

"The medical hurdle, hopefully he can fully get over it and he can continue to progress,"Â￾ coach Mike McCarthy said. "He needs training camp as much as anybody for the amount of time that he has missed. But I thought he had a solid performance against Cleveland (last Saturday night). He is definitely a factor when he is in there."Â￾

I'm afraid the 3-4 defensive alignment is going to bite AJ in the butt as it did to his former Ohio St teammate Bobby Carpenter with Dallas. This is only Hawk's 2nd season ever in a 3-4 scheme. His whole high school and college playing days were in the 4-3 where AJ is clearly more comfortable and built to play in.

I don't think enough emphasis is put on the differences between playing in a 3-4 and a 4-3. Some guys are simply better in one scheme than the other or some can play both at a mediocre or great level. Some LBs are built for the 4 man defensive line in front of them where you take on less offensive linemen and do less blitzing (more read and react type play). Some LBs are better at the 3-4 because of their pass rushing abilities. The same goes for defensive lineman who in excel in the 4-3 because the emphasis is on making big plays and rushing the QB. Whereas defensive linemen in a 3-4 can just be fat gap plugs and take on countless numbers of offensive linemen throughout a game.

Watching Hawk play since he was 19 years old I know he's best suited for weak side OLB in the 4-3. For his career's sake I hope he can get out of GB after the end of this season and go to a team which will best use his talents; which are reading the plays and using sideline to sideline speed to chase down ball carriers and receivers.

I wasn't aware that Kuhn was that productive in college. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia.

Kuhn holds 27 school records and six PSAC records. He finished his

school records. Kuhn led the team in rushing for the third-straight

Kuhn got to play some tailback last week in the 4th qtr vs Seahawks...had 6 carries for 30 yards and a TD catch. The Packers do realize he can play tailback in a pinch; eventhough he's listed as a fullback...

Rookie LB Frank Zombo is earning more reps...he's stepped it up for injured players Clay Matthews &amp; Brad Jones.

Back-up QB Matt Flynn looks solid.

I expected the Packers to blacken a little before they started to cause a stir (like the Pacers did in the NBA for being almost half white). I truly thought though- that Ted Thompson had a bit of soft spot in his heart for the white underdog skill player- of course as long as he is truly more talented than a black one. He did draft two white WRs in one year. I thought the Packers would bring in someone like Jake Sharp at RB- as a 7th round pick or UFA- due to Sharp being so underrated by every other team and their lack of depth behind Grant. Think again- every team in the NFL follows the agenda.

Havner was also praised during last night's game against Indy. I'm surprised he's even still on the team given that he had an offseason DUI. White players usually have to behave like Boy Scouts at all times, especially ones that aren't big names, whereas black players can do anything, up to and including killing people, and remain in the league.

Very true Don, I was really disappointed to see Matt Giordano's stay was so short and he wasn't given much of an opportunity. The Packers haven't had a white safety get playing time since Chuck Cecil and Scott McGarahan. I would love to see the Packers go after Sash in the 2011 draft!

My guess is Zombo will make the team (he's already first unit special teams)and his presence will mean the PackerscutPoppinga for "cap reasons". Or that's what the media will report. If Poppinga stays, which I doubt, then perhaps Spence Havner (LB/TE)or Brandon Chillar (who the DWF's think is white)will be sent packing. That's just the way it works. GM Ted Thompson, who's an Ex-NFL LB/special teams wedge buster,seems somewhat fair, but too many white LB's will raise caution flags around the league. Plus, with all the white QB's, special teams mascotsand OL's, the Pack are hovering dangerously close to having 27 whites on their 53 man roster (that's over 50% and an unwritten crime).

I was shocked to see Zombo play LB last night,even thoughhe ran a low 4.7 (as a DE) and showed real well in all his agility drills at Pro Day, because word after the draft was every team wanted to skew him towards offense (tight end/fullback).In a different era he would've been drafted fairly high (top 3 rounds). Maybe the fact that Lovie and injuries ruined ex-CMU star Dan Bauzin's career had an effect? Who wants a white DE/LB from a mid-major school that had a recent 2nd round bust?

He did a great job finding the one person (Kevin Greene) that believed in him as a LB. I wish him luck, because that Brad Jones dude doesn't seem real special and could be injury prone, anyway. The Packer's defensive line, as usual, is filled with busts (Harrell), unproductive has-beens (Pickett), and criminals (Jolley, who is suspended).

Packers FB John Kuhn is expected to be third in line for carries in Green Bay this season following Kregg Lumpkin's release. Green Bay would probably grab a street free agent before employing Kuhn as a double-digit carry-per-game back, but he could get some work if Ryan Grant or Brandon Jackson goes down. Jackson and Grant are the only tailbacks.
