This article details the athleticism of Jets punter Steve Weatherford

Weatherford, the Jets' Versatile Punter, Is Ready to Kick, and to Run

Weatherford almost turned professional as a decathlete. In the high jump, he once hit 6 feet 10 inches. In the long jump, he hurtled 24 feet. And when he finally decided that a career in the N.F.L. might be best for him after graduating from Illinois, he was running the 40-yard dash in about 4.45 seconds. Those are numbers that would make most running backs jealous.

From Rotoworld:

Jets SS Jim Leonhard is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured thumb. Coach Rex Ryan provided no timetable for Leonhard to return, but said the injury "doesn't sound good to me." Eric Smith will likely take over. Leonhard was averaging five tackles a game with one pick through nine weeks.

Great news for Eric Smith. Smith should be starting alongside Leonhard now, but given NFL policy, the Jets will find an afflete to keep Smith at 3rd safety.

Jets Trade Rhodes to Cardinals

Updated Mar 6, 2010 7:38 PM ET
NEW YORK (AP)
The New York Jets traded safety Kerry Rhodes to the Arizona Cardinals for undisclosed draft compensation.

The Jets announced the deal Saturday. FOXSports.com contributor Adam Schein was the first to report the trade.

On Friday, the Cardinals lost Pro Bowl safety Antrel Rolle, who signed as a free agent with the New York Giants.

Rhodes has four years left on his contract and was due $2 million roster bonus next week. Expected to be one of the standouts on coach Rex Ryan's defense last year, Rhodes struggled and even lost his starting job.

LaDaindian Tomlinson is said to be leaning towards signing with the
Jets, <a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/weblogs/bolts-blog/2010/mar/14/signs-point-new-york/" target="_blank">according
to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune</a>.

Tomlinson, who spent his entire nine-year career with the Chargers,
was released last month. He visited the Vikings and Jets last week, <a href="http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/03/ladainian_tomlinson_heads_home.html" target="_blank">flying
home Saturday morning following a two-day stay in New Jersey</a>.Although
he's tentatively scheduled to visit the Saints and Eagles this week,
people close to him believe he'll sign with the Jets as early as Sunday
or Monday.

Besides the Jets being Super Bowl contenders, Tomlinson is said to
like the idea of playing for offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer,
who was quarterbacks coach in San Diego with Tomlinson and runs the
same offense.

Not good news for Danny Woodhead if this happens.

I knew the fat turd Ryan had something up his sleeve. Tomlinson is washed up and will never be a starter again but Woodhead will be kicked down in the depth chart and might not even make the team. Maybe he can catch on somewhere else.

LT is washed up- Woodhead is a much better backup option to Greene! Woodhead should get 1/3 of the carries if fair!

Man all the teams that could be playing potential STAR white RBs are signing washed up, has been black RBs. The Redskins signed washed up, felony prone Larry Johnson- when they could have easily traded for Peyton Hillis for maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Hopefully some other team makes a qualifying offer for Leon Washington. Another team would lose their 2nd round pick if they sign Washington, but they would have to outbid the Jets first. Lets hope it happens!

I don't even think Tomlinson is a decent backup at this point in time. He's lost a step and I doubt he can even run a 4.5 40 right now.

maybe 4.7... still, it's not just about speed, he just seems to have lost the drive to play. i feel bad for Danny.

Correction, I should have said- if Leon Washington leaves NY than Woodhead should see almost half the carries if fair! Woodhead is a better complimentary scatback than Darren Sproles and is a better rusher than Leon I think. He's not as good a kick returner as LW, but he can also learn to catch the ball as well as LW in NY. Come on Jets...go with the cheaper option in this economy and keep Woodhead. Trade Leon!

It's official, the Jets signed LaDanian Tomlinson to a 2-year deal. Now, being the optimist, this might not be such a bad thing, since the Jets will now focus on other areas to improve upon, and with LT being so injury-prone, and having lost a step or 5, there is more opportunity for that slot receiver to step into the backfield on occasion. A guy can always dream...

I agree Tomlinson is big step down from Jones. Obviously Jones was cut for money reasons and maybe locker room cohesion. Tomlinson is done you can stick a fork in him.

So now they have Shonne Green, Washington, and Tomlinson and Woodhead is the fastest and best athlete of them all. That probably won't make a difference though.

On the surface, this all looks bad for Danny, but I think there's an opportunity here. I think Greene's fumble/injury prone, Washington's a capital ? mark, and Tomlinson is done.

Also, I think Danny would be a good receiver as well.

The Jets should trade Leon W. for economical reasons (that is unless another team outbids the Jets for LW as a RFA- which would forfeit their 2nd round pick to the Jets). This will be an uncapped year and the Jets could use their resources saved to pick up a big free agent in the future. Woodhead comes cheaper, is almost as good a receiver as LW already, can learn to return kicks like a stud, and already has more ability as a runner than LW.

I should also add, that Don is right- the Jets will likely move Woodhead back to slot WR. They only put Woodhead back at his best position (tailback) because LW got hurt. More BS from the NFL! Not one team snatched Woodhead up as a RB off waivers that could have used him last year, after he totaled the 2nd best pre-season rushing performance since 1992. Woodhead had 158 yards on 8.8 YPC with 2 TDs against the Eagles, Mike Anderson had the best pre-season total since 1992- in 2005- with 159 yards.

I don't mind either, Dixie, it may prolong his career in the NFL.

I'll be happy if Woodhead gets regular touches in the slot since he's just to talented to not play at all in the NFL. Playing in the slot is better than being a FB or 4th string RB.

Just saw this news story about Alan Faneca being released. It mentions the two possible replacements for him, Matt Slauson, the 6th round pick from last year, or the new sumo, Vladimir"The French Black Russian" Ducasse

<H2>FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)â€"Two years after coming in to stabilize the Jets' young offensive line, Alan Faneca's(notes) run in New York is over.</H2>
<DIV ="bd">
<DIV id=copy>
<DIV ="_copy 0">

The Jets released the veteran Pro Bowl left guard Saturday, parting ways with one of the leaders of a unit that paved the way for the league's top-rushing offense.

"He gave us two incredible years, but along with Woody (Johnson), Rex and I, our job is to make the hard decision, not necessarily the easy one,"Â￾ general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "With Alan, we just felt it was time to move on."Â￾
<DIV id=sidebar>
<DIV id=sky>

Faneca, who played 10 years in Pittsburgh before signing with New York in 2008, will be replaced by second-round pick Vladimir Ducasse(notes) or Matt Slauson(notes), last year's sixth-round selection.

"The best player will play there,"Â￾ Tannenbaum said.

The team released the nine-time Pro Bowl selection even though he's owed $5.2 million in guaranteed salary this year. Faneca's ageâ€"he's 33â€"and slip in production were also likely factors in him being cut.

"We feel good about Matt Slauson and we feel good about Vladimir stepping in and competing for that job,"Â￾ coach Rex Ryan said. "We never would've let Alan go if we didn't think that one or both of those guys could do the job."Â￾

It was another bold move by the Jets, who also traded away running back Leon Washington(notes) to Seattle on Saturday in the latest flurry of activity in a busy offseason for the team. New York has also traded for Santonio Holmes(notes) and Antonio Cromartie(notes), signed LaDainian Tomlinson(notes), Jason Taylor(notes) and Brodney Pool(notes) and released Faneca, Thomas Jones(notes) and Jay Feely(notes).

"I think this team is going to be special,"Â￾ Ryan said, "and we're out to prove it."Â￾

Still, the move to let go of Faneca is a bit curious, especially since the Jets have been through a similar situation just three years ago. The Jets traded veteran left guard Pete Kendall(notes), in a nasty contract spat, to Washington and went with unproven Adrien Clarke(notes), who struggled mightily.

That led to the Jets signing Faneca to a five-year, $40 million contract, with $21 million in guarantees, which made him then the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. He helped with the development of center Nick Mangold(notes) and left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson(notes), who both made the Pro Bowl last season.

"Alan's definitely going to play in this league again,"Â￾ Ryan said. "I have no idea where, but by releasing him now, (it) gives Alan an opportunity to go, quite honestly, where he wants to go. We're not looking to trade him and send him to a place where he doesn't want to play. We gave him the respect that he's due and this allows him to go where he wants to go."Â￾

That was of little consolation to right tackle and close friend Damien Woody(notes), who also joined the Jets two years ago.

"We work with guys that put it on the line everyday!"Â￾ Woody said on his Twitter page. "We spend more time 2gether than we do with our own family during the season so excuse me if I'm upset."Â￾

Woody later tweeted that he "just had to vent some today "¦ but I know everything happens 4 a reason."Â￾

The 6-foot-4, 332-pound Ducasse was considered by some to be one of the top linemen available in the draft. He has only been playing football for seven years, but was considered an outstanding run blocker who still needs to develop his footwork and technique.

He was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and moved to Stamford, Conn., at age 14. Ducasse was a versatile lineman for the University of Massachusetts and started for three years at left tackle.

"They brought me in to compete,"Â￾ Ducasse said. "We'll see how it goes, but I know I'm a guy they can trust and can rely on. Pretty much all I'm thinking about now is competing."Â￾

Slauson played briefly last season after being drafted in the sixth round out of Nebraska.

"In this business, you've got to move on, and that's what we're staying to do,"Â￾ Ryan said. "We're trying to win a Super Bowl. We're trying to win one this year, just like we go into every season with that in mind. We just thought that the best opportunity we'd have is if we battle with Matt Slauson and Vladimir Ducasse, and let's see what happens."Â￾

Ryan was also not concerned about changing an offensive line that had started every game together in each of the last two seasonsâ€"a rarity in the NFL.

"You stay the same, get better, get worse,"Â￾ Ryan said. "We're getting better. That's why we made the move we made."Â￾

Although this could also be posted in the crime thread, it's just as well here. The "model citizen" Santonio Holmes was kicked off an airplane. How stupid do you have to be to do this?? I fly A LOT, and for some reason, I've never been booted from a flight.

New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes(notes) was escorted off of an airplane Thursday night at Pittsburgh International Airport, WPXI reports.

Investigators tell the news station that the incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday. They say Holmes was not arrested but was escorted off the plane for what they called being a "disruptive passenger."
