2008 NFL Combine

exactly, plus Gatlin is not just some college sprinter, he's Olympics Gold medalist.

some more bits and pieces from pro days:

Idaho LB shoots up draft boards

Despite not getting a lot of publicity in the fall, Idaho linebacker David Vobora is moving up draft boards around the league. His performance at Idaho's on-campus workout March 4 definitely helped.

Vobora looked tremendous in all the position drills -- quick, smooth and fluid in changing directions with ease. Some evaluators doubted his athleticism, but those doubts were put to rest during his workout.

Vobora now rates as a third- or fourth-round prospect despite finishing the season with a late-round grade.

(from Sporting News)
Moffitt ran well (in the 4.6-second range) but strained his hamstring and was not able to finish the workout. His shockingly fast time in the 40-yard dash means teams will dispatch scouts to witness another workout when he's healthy, in three or four weeks

NFL | Giguere works out at CFL Combine
Sat, 15 Mar 2008 17:07:44 -0700

John Murphy, of Yahoo Sports, reports Sherbrooke WR Samuel Giguere measured a 42-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-3 broad jump at the CFL Combine. He completed 17 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press and is expected to run the 40-yard dash in the low 4.4-second range or better during on-field workouts Sunday, March 16.

------------------

If he were black with these numbers he would be a first day pick. Lets see if he even gets drafted by the NFL.

This guy Giguere, I recall has been a very dominant player in Canada. But since it's Canada they may hold the "level of Competition" against him too.

I know almost for certain these guys could contribute on an NFL level. Lumsden ran for about 8 YPC on the CFL level last season for its worst team. This is a higher level of Competition than Div. 1A NCAA football. That is more impressive to me than Reggie Bush's 8.7 YPC for USC.

A 42 inch vertical is just wow! Prediction: Giguerre also runs a 4.41 40 yard!

still, only 17 reps on the bench? this guy looks like a cross of Hulk with something even bigger.

I got into an argument with some guy recently about canadians (and white players) Étienne Boulay and Lumsden, this guy was saying that those guy were better off staying in canada where they can be great player than sitting on the bench in the NFL. My thought was that until you get on an NFL field, how can you know if you're not going to be a great player? They'll never know if they don't take that chance. I hope that Samuel gets the chance to get on an NFL camp, he certainly got the measurable. One of my concern is that the WR position is more technical and less instinctive position than RB, and Sam will need a lot of teaching, stuff like setting up DBs and reading coverage if he wants to contribute. But this is the kind of stuff he'll get to learn on a practice squad, if he gets that chance.

Giguere run 4.49

"By Josh Bell-Webster,
Online Editor, CFL.ca

Samuel Giguere established himself as the top athlete at the 2008 CFL Evaluation Camp in Toronto.

Giguere was the leader in the 40-yard dash and 20-yard shuttle at Varsity Centre on Sunday, posting a time of 4.49 and 4.10 seconds respectively. This was in addition to his 42 inch vertical jump on Saturday.

Giguere, along with teammate Pierre-Luc Labbe, are the first two players from Sherbrooke ever to be invited to a CFL E-Camp, showing the rise in prominence of the Vert & Or programme, as well as a tribute to football in the province of Quebec. A total of 12 students came from QUFL schools, most ever at an E-Camp.

The CFL Canadian Draft will take place on April 30."

Good for him, Dylan Barker , 6'4 Safety who also played in the Shrine Game ran a 4.54

Darryl Stephenson only ran a 4.7 though, there goes his NFL hopes...

Here's a clip from an article on Stephenson, but honestly after running a 4.7 I'm not sure if even a black RB would get much interest from the NFL being that he played in the Canadian college system. Let's hope that Stephenson goes to the CFL or the new league for only college grads in the states and lights it up! I think he could. And just maybe if Lumsden has another brilliant year in the CFL, without getting injured this time, Jesse will go the way of the NFL next season! Jesse Lumsden to me is a lot like Steven Jackson by NFL comparison.

Local trio off to CFL combines
Jim Parker, Windsor Star
Published: Wednesday, March 12, 2008

The road to a pro football career gets a little shorter for a trio of players with local ties.

Windsor Lancers running back Daryl Stephenson, defensive lineman Kyle Sleightholm and Herman grad Terry Firr are among 54 players invited to attend the Canadian Football League evaluation camp in Toronto Friday through Sunday.

Just an invitation to the camp is a strong indication CFL teams have a keen interest in each for the May 2 draft and all three have a lot to offer.

The six-foot-two, 235-pound Stephenson won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2006 and is now healthy after missing parts of last season with injuries.

Still, the 22-year-old finished eighth in the country with 764 yards rushing despite missing two games and parts of two others.

"I'm a little nervous," said Stephenson, who holds the OUA career rushing record. "I know I'll test well and I just hope I do everything right."

Stephenson hasn't ruled out returning to the Lancers for a fifth season and still hopes to get a shot at the NFL.

"I want to take a stab at (the NFL)," Stephenson said. "I'm more of a downhill guy, which is more suited to (the NFL), where CFL (running backs) are usually smaller and quicker."Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Your right there he would be in organ shut down mode. I recall Andreas Munzer dieing off stage because his kidneys shut down.

I'm not so sure that's true, the Munzer incident may have been from steroids. The body works in a calorie burning cycle. First your body burns mostly excess fats on your body when you burn more calories than you have ingested. Then your body will start burning away your muscle. Then when you have very little muscle left your body starts eating away at organs for fuel as seen in starving people in third world countries.

But you are right I have heard that anything below 3% body fat is virtually impossible to maintain for an athlete in top condition. And you do need to store a little body fat to be healthy b/c the body needs to burn some fat for cellular respiration. I had heard from ESPN that Eddie George used to be 2% body fat and I was very skeptical of this b/c it would seem unhealthy. Can you imagine getting sick with the flu and not eating for 5 days if you were 2% body fat, it might kill you. I would say that about 5% body fat would be ideal for an NFL RB IMO.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Check out Greyson Gunheim's numbers...very Vernon Gholston like but where is the media praise for Gunheim? He has a pretty bad ass name too.

NFL | Gunheim works out at Pro Day
Tue, 18 Mar 2008 10:33:32 -0700

J.J. Pesavento, of Next Level Scouting, reports University of Washington DL Greyson Gunheim worked out at his school's Pro Day Monday, March 17. Gunheim had a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot, three and a half-inch broad jump, a 4.58 40-yard dash, a 4.43-second short shuttle, an 11.72-second long shuttle, a 6.76-second three-cone drill and completed 28 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. He measured in at 6-foot-5 and 268 pounds.

Those numbers are pretty amazing. He was borderline draftable, now I'd say he is a 4-6 round prospect. In a fair world he would be a first rounder with measurables like those.

Gunheim was a popular recruit coming out of high school. His forty was always in the 4.5 range. I believe he was listed as an athlete according to rivals.com. The problem was that Washington's defense did not supply any d-line help for him.

at Texas Pro Day, DT Derek Lokey had a 4.37 short shuttle and 38 rep at the bench press!!

Lokey has to be the most under appreciated d-lineman in this draft. He has so much more potential than Okam. Two years ago when Lokey broke his leg the defense was not the same even though the more highly touted Okam was on the field.

Just noticed a very interesting prospect, Houston SS/FS
Rocky Schwartz. He's 5'10", 204 lbs. At Houston's pro-day he put up 25 reps on the bench, ran a 4.42 40, 4.09 SS, 6.52 3-cone (!), 41 1/2" vert, and a 10'02" broad jump.

Not only that, he also had a very good season statistically, leading the team with 103 tackles, and adding 4 tackles for loss, 2 INT's, 8 pass break-ups, 3 forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. I haven't heard about this guy anywhere before.

looking atthose rankings i just noticed that Danny Woodhead is second in the nation for fastest 10 yard dash. how about that slow white boy, huh...

Size can't be used as an excuse as to why Woodhead can't make it in the NFL because there are guys like Warrick Dunn.

Dare I mention that the best running back in NFL history was a shade under 5'8? Not that Danny is the next Barry Sanders, but on paper they certainly have very comparable numbers. And if Danny is only a quarter of what Barry is I still think that's good enough for playing time in today's NFL.

Very good point Mike. I honestly think Woodhead if given a chance would be a poor mans Barry Sanders in the NFL as far as his agility (which is still quite a compliment.) Sanders was an incredible player who I enjoyed watching tremendously. I think Woodhead could very well do what Maurice Jones Drew is doing in Jacksonville numbers wise and certainly what Warrick Dunn did in his career if given a chance.

Another thing is that being small helps a scat back like Woodhead. This is b/c he can hide behind the o-line and then do a good jitter-step cut and burst through and then is like trying to tackle butter in the open field.

Guys, all you have to compare him(Woodhead) to is Sporles of San Diego. He is 507 and probably 180 lbs and had great success last year. Man, if Woodhead doesn't make the 60 man roster, and not the f..king scout teams then its the time to go public with white discrimination in the NFL.

I remember seeing an article some months ago in the Houston paper about him whenI was passing through the airport. If his knee holds up, he`s quite aplayer. Also, the article had a picture of him together with his family and his wife most certainlylooked black to me.
