I should point out another similarity: Both Curtis and Driver have fought through recent injury problems, yet Driver was given a chance to rebound from it, Curtis wasn't.

I see that Donnie Avery was the 33rd Overall pick... seems like "another" reach?

Yes it's Jesse Lumsden at McMaster- which is by Hamilton. I live in the area of Ontario between the Great Lakes and he is pretty well known here. There was a bit of talk of him being snubbed by the NFL by Seattle and Washington- which is how I found this site.

Oh dear, call the police, it looks like Danny Amendola has *gasp* been promoted to first team flanker ahead of mega-talents Mardy Gilyard and Brandon Gibson.

From Rotoworld:
Danny Amendola has replaced Donnie Avery as the Rams' first-team flanker on their updated depth chart.

A slot receiver, Amendola doesn't have the skill set to play outside full time, but it appears he's the getting the early nod with the starters ahead of Mardy Gilyard and Brandon Gibson. It is worth noting that Gibson is listed on the second-team offense, directly behind Amendola. The Rams may quietly be holding out hope that Gibson will claim the position before Week 1.

Rotoworld never ceases bashing white players.

I hate the word "skill-set." It just castespeak for "not dark enough." There goes Rotoworld again hoping a white starter gets replaced before the start of the season. I predict that if Amendola starts even as the 3WR (slot) he'll be the leading reciever.

Rotoworld's hatred of white athletes is so obvious you would have to be blind not to see it.

"The Rams may quietly be holding out hope that Gibson will claim the
position before Week 1."

Someone posted about this earlier on another white receiver when rotoworld posted something similar : If it were true that coaches always play the best player (which is the most common used response by a dwf), why would they be hoping Gibson wins the battle? Shouldn't they hope for the best player to win the spot?

Amendola is one of those players who has the ability to play on the outside as well as the slot.

Yes, I think you are referring to my post on R(oto)idiculousworld.com's similar comment on GB hoping James Jones starts showing his upside so they can place him in front of Jordy Nelson (who was outplaying him this training camp). They gave no proof of how they came to that conclusion and it's a little rotodiculous since Nelson is a year younger and he was drafted a round earlier. Spot on snow...We know the best players don't play and only blacks have untapped "upside". It's all part of the DWF, media, player pampering system. The successful NFL won't change it unless they start to lose fans and $$$.

Receiver has shot to boost his role

The season-ending knee injury to Donnie Avery could mean an extra dose of White Chocolate for the Rams' wide receiver corps.

Mardy Gilyard, the free-spirited rookie wideout, has a nickname for just about everybody. And White Chocolate is his moniker for Danny Amendola.

The rest of the wide receivers, Gilyard explains, are sugar cookies. "We bring the sweet portion to the game," he said. "So if you bring one lone chocolate chip, and place it in a single sugar cookie, how much would that chocolate chip stand out? Get my drift?"

Kind of. Although he approves of the nickname, and takes it as a compliment, Amendola shakes his head at the World According to Gilyard.

"Mardy's going to have a TV show I'm pretty sure one of these days," Amendola said. "He's a character. But he definitely can keep the room light, I guess you could say."

In any event, it looks like Amendola gets the first crack at replacing Avery in the starting lineup opposite Laurent Robinson. Amendola already was playing a lot as the slot receiver in three-receiver sets, but this would basically put him on the field for every play on offense.

The Rams didn't make a lot of personnel changes at wide receiver over the offseason. Much of their hope at the position lies in developing young returning players, many of whom got their first taste of extended NFL playing time last season.

Amendola, for one, looks like he has elevated his game from last season, when he caught 43 passes for 326 yards in 14 games. (He was signed off the Philadelphia practice squad Sept. 22.)

"I tell you, he's a competitor," coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "He's got a little cut between his fingers so he just wraps it up."

Actually, it's more than a little cut. Amendola needed six stitches to close a cut in the webbing between two fingers on his left hand. His fingers were split catching a fastball from quarterback Sam Bradford against New England. Amendola didn't even know he was hurt until he looked down and noticed one of his receiving gloves was bloody.

"You've got to kind of keep him from hurting himself," Spagnuolo said. "He just wants to go, go, go, which is a good problem to have. I love the way he plays and competes. ... I think it's great for our team, and the other guys see it, too. And I think they feed off of it."

Although he primarily has played the slot during training camp, Amendola learned all the wide receiver positions last year. So he should be able to step right into Avery's flanker spot in two-receiver sets.

The question mark right now is finding that third wide receiver. Gilyard, a fourth-round draft pick from Cincinnati, could get the first crack at the job if he shows he has a good enough grasp on the offense.

Gilyard missed part of the spring practice period because Cincinnati's 2010 senior class didn't graduate until early June. (NFL rule prohibits rookies from participating in spring workouts â€" other than the post-draft rookie minicamp â€" until then.)

In addition, Gilyard missed time during training camp because of a nagging wrist injury and missed two practices last week with an illness.

"I think he's behind," Spagnuolo said. "In the volume of the scheme, I do think he's behind. Some of the things that kind of should be smoothed out by now are still not, and that's his â€" he's a pro now and he's got to iron that out. We're coming up here on 14 days before we play a regular season game, so that's something he's got to work on."

Gilyard missed the preseason opener against Minnesota with the wrist injury. He had four balls thrown to him in Game 2 against Cleveland, but no catches. He had one drop, and on another occasion there appeared to be a timing issue between Bradford and Gilyard and the pass fell incomplete.

Thursday against New England, Gilyard finally caught his first passes of the preseason (three for 23 yards).

Gilyard doesn't dispute the notion that he's behind on the playbook because of the missed time.

"My thought process is a little bit slower than everybody because I'm still trying to figure out stuff on the run," Gilyard said. "I'm getting better ... but I need to grow up fast, in all honesty."

Also are in the mix are Brandon Gibson, who came to the Rams last Oct. 20 in the Will Witherspoon trade, and Keenan Burton, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last Nov. 15 against New Orleans.

Gibson caught 34 passes for 348 yards in 10 games last season for the Rams, but he missed much of the spring workouts and much of training camp with a hamstring injury. As a result, he has gone from potential top 3, top 4 receiver to someone who appeared to be on the bubble before Avery's injury.

And he may not be in the clear yet. While agreeing that Gibson rallied some with four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots, Spagnuolo added: "I think he's still fighting an uphill battle. You lose all that time, it's hard to get it back. So you've got to do something in these games. You've got to do something in practice."

Gibson still isn't totally healthy. When asked after Sunday's practice how the hamstring felt, Gibson replied: "Sore. A little bit."

Weenieworld is rooting forveteran first round bust Mark Clayton to take away playing time from Danny:

Newly acquired Mark Clayton was installed Wednesday as the Rams' "Z" receiver -- Donnie Avery's old position. It's the flanker spot, and Clayton's easiest route toward a starting job. If Clayton can nail down the position, he could begin cutting into Danny Amendola's offensive playing time as soon as Week 1. Clayton's quick move up the depth chart is bad news for Brandon Gibson and rookie Mardy Gilyard. It does confirm that split end Laurent Robinson's starting spot is safe.

Don, I saw something similar earlier today when looking up news on Amendola. Here it is:

"Amendola will likely end up back in the slot now that Mark Clayton has
been acquired from the Ravens. Analysis: Amendola is better suited for
working out of the slot so the deal to get Clayton should work out well
for both parties. Clayton probably won't start on Sunday against
Arizona, but within one or two weeks he should be the club's No. 1 or
No. 2 wideout opposite Laurent Robinson."

I have never gone on WrottonWorld. Do they have advertisements on it? If so, I would never buy any of those products.

Westside, the only time I see their stuff is through the CF Riggins fantasy football league that I'm in. They provide updates on all the players. I saw this particular update about Danny today when I was double checking my starting lineup before tonight's games.

Here is another great "analysis" by Gayworld.

Rams special teams coach Tom McMahon refuses to tip his hand on his choice for kick return duties this year.
<div ="s_pNewsTextMain">
Danny Amendola owned both kickoffs and punts last year, but rookie
Mardy Gilyard offers more playmaking ability. McMahon suggests both
players will see action on returns this year. We're penciling in Gilyard
as the primary kickoff returner for now.

So a guy who set a record for returns last year for the franchise has less so called "upside" than an unproven rookie.

So Amendola returns kicks and punts last year and has a decent season and an unproven rookie is more "worthy" and has "better" playmaking ability. What a crock of horsesh*t.

Report from yesterday's game:

Among the players surprisingly not injured was second-year wide receiver Danny Amendola after being body-slammed by Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain.

"I didn't know what was going on for a second. I was in the air,"Â￾ said Amendola, who caught the ball, then popped right to his feet to tell McClain, "It didn't hurt."Â￾

"That's kind of what I was going for,"Â￾ Amendola said. "To show that he got me, but he didn't get me. It is what it is."Â￾

Amendola caught another pass on the very next play.

"It felt good,"Â￾ Amendola said. "It was a first down and we ended up getting a touchdown. It was satisfying to help it out."Â￾

Amendola made a fantastic diving one-handed catch during the Rams win on Sunday. However, instead of appreciating it, the Caste Clown play-by-play announcer (don't know who it was) scolded him for not immediately getting up and trying to get more yardage. The replay showed that Amendola did indeed get up in a timely fashion and try to continue the play. It was a highlight reel catch, soiled only by the bitch who called it.

Don, I saw that highlight on BSPN of all places. Maybe someone there who doesn't subscribe to the castean doctrine slipped it in. I was a highlite reel play.

It must've been ESPN slipping it in there, I saw the play live, and the FOX announcers loved the play.
