This will be a test of "Psycho" Harbaugh's fairness to white players. Collie is far more talented than the other woeful WRs on the 49ers. Pyscho hasn't really had a talented white skill position player during his tenure with the club. So...what will he do? Or will one of the endless supply of black defensive players on the team go head hunting in practice?

Will Psycho stick Collie in the slot, where he will more likely be concussed yet again? I don't hold out much hope, but at least he signed with a team that has a glaring need at the position.

After signing with the loathsome 49ers a few days back, the once-scintillating speed maven, Austin Collie, has begun practicing with Jim “The Manic Wigger” Harbaugh’s Afrocentric platoon. Ironically, “Wigger Jim” currently has three white receivers on the roster in Collie, former Seahawk, Charley Martin, and former Eagle, Chad Hall…

With Manningham and Crabtree suffering major injuries, only Anquan Bolden, 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round bust AJ Jenkins, and perennial loser smurfette, Kyle Williams, are locks to the make the squad. Let’s hope that Collie can somehow, someway, play his way onto this for-blacks-only squad, some additional injuries occur, and Austin can finish what he started in the first six weeks of the 2010 season.

Charly Martin was cut today.

Rookie TE Vance McDonald has been getting very positive reviews and it's likely he'll see the field quite a bit in two tight end formations with Michael Crabtree out until at least the last part of the regular season. The 49ers with Collie and McDonald playing won't be totally unbearable to watch, only nearly so.

What a viewing dilemma it would be if somehow Collie (who's a lock), Chad Hall, and McDonald were all on the field at the same time. We would want them to all do well, but with Colin Kraepernick throwing to them, it makes that a tough proposition. Heck, just Kraepernick throwing to Collie is tough to take.

According to this article, even Collie's not assured of making the team:

Austin Collie faces battle to make 49ers’ roster

The San Francisco 49ers have given Austin Collie the opportunity he wanted, but now he actually has to make the team.

The former BYU receiver is listed far down on the depth chart this week as the 49ers prepare for Thursday’s preseason opener against Denver. That’s where his comeback stands at the moment, following knee surgery, tryouts with several teams and a long wait for a chance like this.

I didn’t see the Broncos-49ers game, but it sounded like a nice start for Collie. From the Washington Post…

In limited playing time, newcomer Austin Collie appeared healthy and effective while emerging as a veteran who could step up and climb up an uncertain depth chart for a team in search of legitimate candidates to fill front-line roles at the position.

Though coaches are still advising him to not go full bore in practice, during Thursday’s exhibition Collie looked recovered from the ruptured patella tendon that forced him to miss all but one game for the Colts last season.

He had two receptions, including a 16-yard catch on fourth down to extend San Francisco’s final drive late in the fourth quarter. Veteran newcomer Kassim Osgood’s three receptions for 34 yards led all 49ers wideouts against the Broncos.

CAPTION: Would-Be Superstar, Collie, Returns to NFL Action

Does anyone know if Collie played on the outside or in the slot during the game?

Meanwhile, their 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round bust courtesy of Illinois, AJ Jenkins, continues his comical struggles…

Not so pleasing has been the inconsistent development of A.J. Jenkins, San Francisco’s 2012 first-round draft pick. After finishing his rookie season with zero receptions, Jenkins was expected to make a much bigger contribution this year, particularly with the injuries to other top wideouts.
But he has been slow to come around this summer, and did not make much of an impression in the exhibition opener despite playing 39 snaps — 11 more than any other 49ers receiver.

Jenkins lost a fumble after his only reception, and was the intended receiver on both of San Francisco’s interceptions - the only two other passes thrown his way. He didn’t turn around to look for the football in time on the first pick, and on the second he didn’t go up in the air to fight for the football with a safety on an overthrown pass.

Collie seems to have completely ignored the thousands of mainstream articles (lead by Rabbi Bob Kravitz of the Indy Star) that have emerged over the past 2-3 years feigning concern for his health and pleading with him to retire. I think they’re afraid that his talent could further damage the Caste System. Collie and I are almost the exact same age and we both have a wife and two young kids. Collie is a role model for all young whites to follow. I wish him the very best of luck, in all aspects of life, and I’d love to see him return to greatness…

A smart writer:

Austin Collie Should Start at Receiver for the 49ers

by Lance Cartelli

The San Francisco 49ers may have eleven healthy receivers on their roster, but they have a glaring hole opposite of Anquan Boldin. With some players with immense potential not stepping up, it is time for the 49ers to start injury prone Austin Collie at the receiver spot.

Currently, Collie is buried on the depth chart due to him signing just a week ago, but in his first week with the Niners he has impressed. Yesterday, Collie was one of the more effective 49ers on the field and caught two touchdowns in the red zone, a combination of Boldin, Collie, Vernon Davis and a running back of your choice could be deadly in the red zone for the Niners.

Collie does not come without baggage though, he was out of the league due to several concussions and a torn patella tendon in his knee. When healthy, Collie is a quarterbacks dream. He catches 70% of the balls thrown his way and he is a first down machine. With Michael Crabtree optimistically out until Thanksgiving, the Niners need players that can convert on third down, Crabtree’s bread and butter. With Boldin and Collie the Niners would have two of the better third down specialists for Colin Kaepernick.

For Collie and Boldin — two players not fleet of foot — to work, the Niners would need Davis to step up as the deep threat in the offense. The player that “takes the top off the defenseâ€￾. Reports are that Kaepernick and Davis have been building a strong rapport and that Davis is almost uncoverable on deep routes in practice.

Expect Collie to play a lot more in the second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs and with A.J. Jenkins and Ricardo Lockette not stepping up at the receiver position, it is an opportune time for Collie (only 27 years old) to take the starting receiver position from the young guys.

When Crabtree and Mario Manningham return, it may be a different story, but right now Collie gives the 49ers the best chance to win games especially early in the season when they have a brutal start.

Here's an interesting development. Not sure how this will affect Collie, but it's never good to have a new "project" show up in camp, ready to show all of the unrealized "upside".

On the surface, it's simply a trade swapping first round busts, but A.J. Jenkins is a known bust commodity for the 49ers (that's why they're jettisoning him), while Jonathan Baldwin probably hasn't had the "correct environment to thrive" in the views of the coaches and DWFs. I forget which of our esteemed posters, dwid or Riddlewire, commented on the pick at the time of the draft, and said that Baldwin would be a bust, unable to separate from NFL corners. He will just continue to underachieve with the niners. I hope it doesn't cost Collie a roster spot.

Will Reeve of “Rant Sports” steals a page from “Rabbi” Bob Kravitz’s Talmud and is suggesting that Collie’s career might be over…

Currently the 27-year-old wideout is still fighting for a spot on the San Francisco 49ers roster. Collie did immediately impress in practice with his intelligence, route running and hands, but he still appears to be on the outside looking in.

Between Anquan Boldin, Marlon Moore, Kyle Williams, Quinton Patton and the newly acquired Jonathan Baldwin, the 49ers appear set at wideout — especially since they will have Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree returning before season’s end. That means that Collie will more than likely be cut before August 31.

He may be wise to call it a career at that point.

Considering how impressive Collie has been in practice, it certainly was surprising to not see him enter last week’s game until the very late stages. Perhaps head coach Jim Harbaugh is thinking more about Collie’s long-term future than he is about any potential short-term gains for his team.

Article: http://www.rantsports.com/nfl/2013/...s-rumors-austin-collies-career-could-be-over/

Is that the same puny, pygmy-sized Kyle Williams of 35 career receptions, brick-hands, and countless costly fumbles? The same Jonathan Baldwin of 41 career receptions who was such a bust for the Chiefs (a squad desperate for wideouts) that he was recently traded to SF and has yet to even practice with the team? As for Marlon Moore and Quinton Patton…who are these scrubs?

Reeve is right…how could Austin Collie hope to compete against such human-titans? The reality, of course, is that Collie seems adamant about being an NFL player again. I believe he’s far more motivated that former 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round busts, rookies, and collegiate nobodies.

Austin Collie apparently had a workout with the Chargers yesterday. With any luck, the would-be-superstar will land a spot and help the resurgent Phillip Rivers make a run at the playoffs in a difficult division…

The Chargers also worked out former Indianapolis Colts starter Austin Collie, former Tennessee Titans starter Lavelle Hawkins, former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Derek Hagan and former Denver Broncos wide receiver Matt Willis.

He's also got a workout with the Titans. Career wise, he's better off in San Diego where there's no clear cut #1 receiver. Rivers also is off to a hot start so this would do wonders for Collie's career if he's back healthy. San Diego would be crazy not to sign a healthy Collie.

The ceaslessly mean-spirited bastards over at "RantSports.com" are fast becoming some of the most repugnant drivel-spewers on the internet. From an article bashing Collie by Ben Sullivan...

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing when the New England Patriots announced that they were bringing in veteran slot receiver Austin Collie. Collie, who reminds me of the kind of receivers the Patriots utilize well, has been a non-factor in the NFL the last few years after suffering multiple concussions. Now that we know how severe the long-term consequences of those concussions are, it’s hard for me to believe that Collie will be able to stay on the field this year for New England.

Collie fits the New England offensive system quite well. The Patriots love to use quick, underneath receivers in their passing game. Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the league at throwing the crossing and seam routes that Collie has ran effectively in his career. It’s not a lack of talent that has kept him on the sidelines recently, it’s all those concussions.

The “kind of” receivers? Interesting choice of words, Ben.

Let's hope Collie sticks to the roster and isn't some temporary move by Bill B. Perhaps Brady wants one of Manning's old weapons since Manning is doing so well with Welker.

It's amazing how ignorant the DWFs are when it comes to Collie. They all think he's a slot receiver with "Welker skills when healthy". How many slot receivers are 6'-0" or 6'-1", as I've seen Collie listed? Sure he can go across the middle and make great plays but he can do that on the outside as well. If anything, I'd compare him to a Marques Colston type. Comparing him to Welker ad nauseam is absurd, lazy and racist.

Thankfully, Belichick doesn’t seem to think Collie is limited to playing slot receiver. From his press conference today…

Q: Are there any similarities between the systems Austin Collie has been in in the past and here to possibly make his transition easier?

BB: Yeah, I don't know – he seems like a pretty smart guy, so I think probably what we're doing are things he's done before, just had different ways of calling it or terminology or that type of thing. We'll see. We've had him on the field for one day, so we'll see how it goes today. We'll kind of recall where he is and see where we're at tomorrow and make a decision. I don't know.

Q: How would you describe him as a receiver – not specific to the one day you worked with him, but having worked on him coming out in the draft and then watching him in the NFL?

BB: I'd say in his career, he's played both inside and outside, so he has some versatility.

Here are the details of Collie’s contract, which appears to be the league minimum for a veteran…

A snapshot look at the contract signed by receiver Austin Collie with the Patriots:

Term: 1 year (through 2013)
Signing bonus/incentives: None
Base salary: $715,000

The deal includes a split, so if Collie lands on a reserve list his base salary would be reduced. There is also an injury waiver as part of the deal, which is likely tied to Collie's past with concussions.

As one would expect given Collie's injury history, and the time of year on the NFL calendar, he isn't in a position with great leverage. From a team perspective, this is a deal that has as limited of a financial risk as possible for a player with Collie's experience.

With minor injuries to every receiver on the roster (even Matthew Slater), with the exception of Julian Edelman, Collie could be thrust into action immediately. Hopefully, somehow, someway, he can revive his career in New England.

Does anyone recall a squad in which three active white receivers were all featured on the 53-man roster at the same time during any particular season over the past 25 years? New England flirted with the idea in 2011 with Edelman, Welker, and Ebert, but Ebert was cut a few days before the season.

From what I can tell...the 1992-1993 Buffalo Bill had Steve Tasker, Don Beebe, and Brad Lamb. I was too young to remember, but from what I've read Tasker was a special teamer, Beebe was a WR, and Lamb was a kick returner.

So how many DWFs think that Collie missed the latter part of the 2012 season because of a concussion? I think 99% of them think that, as opposed to him banging up his knee.

Some Rhodes Scholar tweeted this at Adam Schefter: Quite‏@oBryan23h
@AdamSchefter @FieldYates this makes the Pats have the whitest WR core [sic] in NFL history.

I guess he thinks wide receivers in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s were predominantly black.

https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/385778064816627712

The cultural marxist thinking is to hate or ignore anything that is majority White, and also assert that there is NOTHING that White men can do better then any other group. The Patriots are close to doing both. For that they must be attacked in anyway possible.

The reason the Patriots have so many White wide receivers? It cannot be broached as a subject only snidely insulted. To deal with or discuss honestly is not allowed. Just look away and try not to notice. Or if you do, mock and disparage.

What? Smarter? Huh? Better hands? More dependable? Clutch? Nah, it's just a fluke, or a racist conspiracy.

Even most DWFs agree that the Patriots have the most complex offensive playbook in the league. Then they wonder why the Patriots offense is so white.

I could be wrong but I don't see Austin getting a huge amount of reps long term in this offense. He's likely a "patch" as journalists have been describing him. Austin is not a legal liability because of the waiver he's signed but he is a PR liability. If he goes down with another concussion, it doesn't make the Pats look good.

On the other hand, a perception seems to be gradually growing that Gronk is deliberately delaying his return so as to, very understandable, prolong his overall NFL career and not give in to the sometime shorter interest goals of his team. After all, the Pats have the opportunity to go after other players once one is "finished" whereas Gronk has only one body with which to make his money.

It's tempting to imagine that BB has an interest in using Collie, who is perceived as vulnerable in a more serious way, as a shaming device to get Gronk and co. on the field. Not in an overt way but sort of like "Well, here's a tough kid that wants to play whatever the doctors are saying. So let's grab em. We need toughness. Guys who are willing to sacrifice and play through/risk injury."

Amendola's contract, I understand, has many short term incentives, encouraging him to get on the field early (though not sure how his contract exactly compares to Gronk's in this regard). Any player, nevertheless, must constantly weigh these short term advantages against long term advantages, to the extent they seem separate.

Collie is a good player and I'd love to see him get some reps and do well. Absolutely hate to see him get hurt again however. More interested in getting Amendola and Gronk on the field however and seeing Edleman continue to flourish. Hoping for good health all around. It's a tough sport.

I recall this site talking about how the Broncos had 4 white WRs out of 6 or 7 in the late 90s or early 2000s (not sure which) -with Shanahan- when I first started lurking in about 2005 or 2006. I don't remember all the names, but Ed McCaffrey was one of them. Of course the NFL has moved even further to the left (Shanahan has become even more of a corporate prostitute) as well as the country as a whole. The NFL even does business with h.c porn now. They featured a penthouse Superbowl swingers party. Don't give this evil corporation your money. Watch it at a bar if you have to watch it. I advise everyone to get a minimum cable package or none at all and just watch tolerable movies or show DVDs at your convenience.

Collie cut by the Pats. You know just when you want to root for the pats they cut a player who helped them win a game for an afleet special teams player. It seems collie suffered a knee injury or something. I hope he can catch on with another team soon.
