just a couple of interesting facts that most college football experts aren't smart enough to notice...
two Heisman Trophy "candidates" at running back have been playing behind white running backs who are equally, or probably more, talented but don't get comparable touches. instead, they are relegated to almost strictly a blocking role. of course, i'm talking about rice at Rutgers running behind Brian Leonard and darren mcfadden running behind Peyton Hillis at Arkansas. the white backs, being the multi-talented, unselfish athletes they are, have excelled in their role. however they get very little appreciation for it other than being "unselfish."
take a look at what their "more afaletic" teammates did without them on the field on Saturday...
Leonard pulled a hamstring and suddenly rice can't run. he tallied a pathetic 50 yards and a TD on 18 carries, for an anemic 3 ypc average.
Hillis was out with a horrific deep thigh bruise, and mcfadden nets 84 yards on 26 attempts, an average of only 3.2 ypc.
maybe the white guys in front are the BIGGEST reason the black backs are getting the hype...
the numbers speak for themselves.
and i watched the Vanderbilt game where Hawkins got to play late... he had a couple of really nice runs, but his numbers were severely hurt by the fact he was hit in the backfield 5 times on the drive.
and for Lumsdenpower... Bird is a dominant power runner. his o-line, and in fact the entire Idaho team, suffers froma serious lack of talent. they are a very poor team, and his rushing stats this year do NOT reflect his talent level.
also, one last thing... Danny Woodhead, a Division 1 tailback playing at Division II Chadron State, has 2488 yards and 31 TDs rushing this season, an average of 226 yards per game and 8.5 yards per carry.
he also has 33 catches for 315 yards and a TD on the year, in leading Chadron State to an undefeated regular season.
