White Draft Prospects for 2008

Okay, its that time of year again as College Football
prepares to shift from the regular season to the Bowl
season and into the offseason. For the past several
years I have tried to compile draft rankings from the
various experts, news services and scouting services
to get a handle on where players rate as potential NFL
draft picks. Last season I used the following
sources:

This season I hope to continue to add to the list of
sources, as it can only increase the potential
accuracy of the study. My requirements are that the
source has to have updated information (Any source
that hasn't updated after the end of the last bowl
game I won't use), break out postional groupings
(DLine, OLine or Defensive Back groupings aren't
specific enough) and have some sort of legitimate
credentials. If anyone has any suggestions for
additional sources, please let me know.

So I wanted to list my very preliminary rankings of
potential White draft picks, to set a starting point
from which we can determine if a guy is trending up or
down as the draft approaches. My experience has been
that the trend for Whites is normally down, unless a
phenomenal workout occurs (Like Tim Shaw last year).
This ranking only includes Seniors, underclassmen will
be added as they officially declare. Currently only 6
sources have updated and Free rankings, I will
incorporate the others as they update or as it gets
nearer to the draft and I pay for subscriptions.
Players only ranked by 1 or 2 sources will be
excluded.

nice job reclaimsocal, honestly i was thinking about doing my write up today but I will just build off yours. It seems you have done a good job with your write up and I haven't begun to research to heavily as of yet. Its also hard to indicate what underclassmen are leaving early even though most whites do not besides QB. Small school sleeper types I am not familiar with are yet to be found. Also its hard to determine the UDFAs ala Wes Welker that will be found this year.

This year seems to be promising for white RBs with the potential for 4 to be drafted. The buzz in the league this year has been not to spend a number one pick on an RB so Hillis, Hester, Schmitt and Woodhead have a chance to make an impact since none will obviously be first rounders. Woodhead is probably my fav player in this draft and has at least recieved some publicity. Wes Welker can only help the cause of smaller shiftier white players and its a copy cat league. Chad Hall could also benefit from this as well althought I do not know what the Air Force's rule of commitment are.

Chris Norwell DT Illinois has a good chance of getting drafted. I watched him play a few times this year and he impressed me with his penetration and disruption ability and has put up great stats.

if Jordy Nelson is ranked only the 15th best wide receiver in the NFL Draft, then how much more obvious can the ridiculousness of the caste system be?

this is a video of Jordy Nelson completely outrunning Aquib Talib, allegedly an 'elite shutdown corner' and one of the 'premier defenders' in college football. just so you know, Jordy Nelson had 10 catches for 137 yards and a touchdown with Talib 'covering' him and a scatter-armed quarterback throwing him the ball.

with a less than impressive quarterback under center this season, Jordy Nelson put together the best year EVER for a Kansas State wideout. he set the school single-game record for receptions with 15, and his 1,606 receiving yards shattered the single-season mark. Nelson, who had 122 receptions (yes, that's a record, too), scored 11 touchdowns along the way. additionally, Nelson is one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award that goes to the nation's top receiver (the winner is announced Dec. 6 on ESPN's awards show).

in his spare time, Nelson managed to throw 2 touchdown passes AND return 5 punts for 264 yards (yes, that's a 52.8 yard average!) and 2 more touchdowns.

yeah, i'd say he was a 'marginal' talent.

he dominated EVERY secondary he faced... yet somehow there are at least 14 better guys than him? i'd like these caste whores to show them to me.

every team he faced knew he was the ONLY threat KSU had in the passing game, yet they couldn't stop him. here is a web site that shows just what this white man can do.

Trust me, Jordy will NOT get the mike hass treatment, for 2 reasons, size & speed. If he runs what i think he will run (in the 4.45 range) at 6-3 218lbs, those are the same measureables as braylon edwards, so even in the castewhore NFL, he is a first round pick. I predect that he will be a 20-25 slot guy. But lets not kid ourselves, if he was black he would be a top 10 pick.

Good job on that list reclaimsocal. I would concur with your list of sources. Just a couple things to add. A lot of these sites haven't done a complete overhaul of their rankings since the beginning of the season. There's always a tendency to underrate white skill position players pre-season. I would expect guys like Jordy Nelson to rise, 12 weeks of domination has to do something doesn't it? DraftDaddy ranks Woodhead at RB but they separate the small school prospects from the D1A. DE Chase Ortiz of TCU stands a good shot of being drafted. He just got an invite to the East-West Shrine Game as well. NFLdraftcountdown ranks him above Harrington. I also think Arizona's OLB Spencer Larsen stands a decent chance at being drafted, he's been a hell of a ball player this year in the PAC10.
To Leonardfan: As far as I can tell, being let out of service commitments is totally at the discretion of the Air Force. There's no hard and fast rules as to who they let out and who they don't but the higher he gets drafted (if at all) the more likely they'll let him out of his obligation.

I've recently discovered Louisville's Brock Bolen; he's officially a fullback, but he's fast and powerful, fun to watch. He's only a junior, but I'll be interested to see if any pro team is interested in actually giving him a few carries. He's quick and does move a pile.

I think you're right, psychosid. I'm thinking more like 30-35 (it is the NFL, after all). Either way, I doubt that even the most evil, biased caste system could keep this guy down. "They" won't have any of the typical "lacks speed, burst, quickness" bullsh*t comments that they gave to Mike Hass and David Ball. I think we can all agree that Hass has better hands, body control, and route-running, but Nelson seems faster, bigger, and plays stronger that Hass.

I can't wait to see Nelson destroy every WR with his combine numbers!

While I'll agree somewhat with your last statement, I think the thought is that he can't be ignored in the draft. While some idiot coach may make the wrong moves with Nelson once he's in, I don't think he'll get left after the first or second round. Last year Gonzalez made it in the first, and Samardzija probably would have, if not the second. The problem is more amplified with the good receivers aren't the top in production, not on the top teams, etc. and have proven themselves on the field but just haven't gotten the spotlight due to caste treatment. Don't get me wrong, I'm no draft guru or anything like that, but I would be baffled if Nelson doesn't go first or second round, even though he deserves to be a top 10 pick.

Who was the top white linebacker in 1999?I don't remember, butI know he wasn't as good as Brian Urlacher. Compare the numbers of the white receivers playing a lot now to the white stars of 1994. Ricky Proehl wasstarting back then, but who else?


Look at sacks. Vrabel, Allen, Kampman, Kerney. In 1997, were the leading sack men in the NFL white? Not a chance.


We have the quality white players, now we need to add quantity.

oh yeah, no doubt. also linebackers like Dan Connor, J Leman, Laurinaitis will be next wave of white stars at this position, just like Hawk, Greenway or Posluszny in last two years. TEs will have a harder time establishing themselves but once they get a chance i am sure they will do just fine.
as for white receivers, everyone but underused Bennett and Matt Jones is doing great, Walter, Curtis, Welker, Jurevicius and now Tony Gonzalez. we do need fresh blood here though.
