LB Leo Chenal is signing with the Commanders, 3 years $24 million+ deal. Good to see him get paid!
 
Our Lads has Chenal listed as a MLB, in fact they already have him as the starter ahead of future Hall of Famer Bobby Wagner, who is entering his 15th season and will turn 36 in June and is currently unsigned. Because of that I like the landing spot a lot. Leo should be awesome in the middle, a tackling machine who also makes "splash plays" so hoping he'll be "scapegoat proof." Reminds me of Logan Wilson in that regard only stronger as Chenal has beastly strength. Always underused by the Chiefs who used him as a part-time outside backer/edge rusher, I'm seeing a big-time season from Leo Chenal if the Commanders do indeed use him in the middle.

There were a lot of articles to the effect last offseason that Luke McCaffrey's role was going to greatly increase and it didn't happen even though Luke looked great when he played, averaging 18.5 yards per catch but only had 11 receptions because of lack of playing time and because Jayden Daniels excelled at not looking his way when he was open. Luke later was injured and finished 2025 on IR.

Washington has suffered significant losses at WR and Luke is currently listed by OurLads as the team's starting slot receiver (even though he should clearly play predominantly outside), but Daniels is still the starting QB, and Caste Clown Dan Quinn is still the head coach. At least David Blough has replaced Kliff Kucksbury at OC, which could help McCaffrey's cause.

Luke McCaffrey's 2025 season was abruptly cut short due to a collarbone injury as he was well on his way to well-surpassing his production from his rookie year.

With an inside track on a massive target share becoming available due to the departure of Zach Ertz and Deebo Samuel, to go along with his familiarity with quarterback Jayden Daniels and offensive coordinator David Blough, McCaffrey will have plenty of space to operate.

The middle of the field will be open, and his understanding of sitting down in zone and timing makes him the perfect security blanket for Daniels. Even with the recent additions of Chig Okonkwo, Dyami Brown, and Van Jefferson, McCaffrey should have the inside track at starting in the slot, depending on what the team does in the upcoming NFL Draft.

 
Should be a breakout season for Luke. He’s a dynamic athlete that has just never found his role in the right situation.
 
Will Luke McCaffrey be Caste aside for a third straight season despite having nice size, speed, athleticism, and intelligence. Given he was a former quarterback and who his father was as an NFL receiver, not to mention how great his brother is, it would be a Caste crime if he's screwed over by the Commanders. And then there's Jayden Daniels, who to this point has seemed allergic to throwing Luke the ball even though he's frequently been wide open when he's seen the field.

If he doesn't get a genuine opportunity this season, and Washington's other receivers after Terry McLaurin are weak and/or unproven, he'll be written off as a bust and will be a backup or Caste out of the league completely.

Like has been mentioned above I also believe that Jayden Daniels will look the other way countless times despite Luke McCaffrey being
open again & again. For those that watch enough of the games it's blatant in my opinion. I've seen this type of scenario on other teams
too. Basically the magical qb's prefer to throw to their own the majority of the time. There are exceptions like Mahomes to Kelce but Tightends are like a security blanket for any qb. I hope Luke McCaffrey can get more balls thrown his way but I won't hold my breath!
 
Washington signed Leo Chenal for 3 years and $24 million, which would appear to be the standard "White discount" given how productive and uber talented Leo is. Now we get to see how the Commanders use him in the upcoming season. Bill Barnwell of BSPN has referred to Chenal as "the NFL's top backup" for '26, which would be a woeful underuse of him much like he was underutilized in Kansas City. Besides being very productive, this is how athletic Chenal is:

Commanders general manager Adam Peters doesn't reveal much about his methodologies for signing and drafting players. We do know he has a type, though, and it's players with freaky athletic scores.

It's not a requirement, but most of the players Peters has signed in the last two years have high Relative Athletic Scores (RAS) from their combine/pro day testing. Chenal fits that description; he was given a RAS of 9.99, ranking him third out of 2,406 linebacker prospects from 1987-2022. He received "elite" grades in the 40-yard dash, vertical and broad jump while also getting positive grades for his height and weight.

But Chenal's test numbers aren't just elite for a linebacker; they rank high for just about every defensive position. He would have gotten a 9.83 as a cornerback; a 9.85 as a defensive end; a 9.89 as a defensive tackle; a 9.92 as a free safety; and a 9.99 as a strong safety. His size would have been a negative up front, but he received at least a "good" grade for every other metric at every position.

Defensive coordinator Daronte Jones wants athletes in his new defensive scheme, and it looks like Peters gave him one of the best.

Despite Barnwell's labeling of Chenal as a continuing backup, OurLads lists him as the starter at WLB, and he also has a chance to wear the green dot and start in the middle. Washington did draft the much hyped Sonny Styles in the first round and he'll presumably be a starter right away, but they would have to be Caste idiots of the highest order not to also start Chenal. This article is more in line with how the team should use Leo but we'll have to wait and see.

Tight Ends have become an essential feature of modern day offenses. OCs probably constantly drill into the heads of the less cerebral QBs that if the play isn’t developing, or if confused, to either: 1) tuck it and run, 2) look for the tall white guy in the middle of the field, or 3) throw the ball away (which is less likely due to the urge to do #1 or #2.
