McCain was not a war hero. He broadcast North Vietnamese propaganda while he was a prisoner of war. He was the Tokyo Rose of that war. McCain was given the offer to go home and be released from POW status ( mostly due to his father's ex rank ) and he did not go. He did over 7 years in a prison where torture was common. He may not be a war hero but I do have a lot of respect for him at least for that epsode of his life.
