CSU's Bell back in time for spring </font>

By Brett Okamoto, Rocky Mountain Collegian
March 23, 2007
(CSTV U-WIRE) FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- For the first time in nearly seven months, CSU running back Kyle Bell will take part in an official team practice Saturday. The last time he did so was in August of last year, days before the team's first game of the season.

No CSU team in recent history comes to mind as being more reliant on a single player than the Rams are on Bell. After a breakout season in which Bell ran for 1,208 yards and ten touchdowns, the Bell-less Rams ranked 113th in rushing defense out of 119 NCAA teams.

Although Bell will be on the field, he said the coaches want him to take it slow on his rehabbed right knee.

"They're going to be limiting what I do pretty well," said Bell on his involvement in spring practice. "I'm at a point where I could go out and do anything, they just don't want to put me in a position to set myself back."

Bell went under the knife to repair the torn ACL he suffered in practice weeks after the injury and has been steadily rehabbing ever since. Although it can be a fairly painful process, Bell said that wasn't the worst part about trying to come back.

"Persistence, that was the hardest part," Bell said. "To keep going over there and doing the little things over and over again. It got monotonous. It was frustrating."

With his first practice back in sight, all the tedious rehabbing will pay off for the junior who now has two years of eligibility left after not participating in any games last year.

While much is riding on Bell and the resurrection of a ground game that was the only one in the country that failed to produce a 400-yard back, the Rams are returning plenty of impact players from last season.

Quarterback Caleb Hanie returns to run the offense for coordinator Dan Hammerschmidt. There is hope that history will repeat itself, as five of the six CSU quarterbacks who returned after starting their junior year led the Rams to a bowl game.

H-back/tight end Kory Sperry returns after setting a school record for most touchdowns caught by a tight end in a single season. He caught five last season.

The Rams also hang on to the wearer of the Golden Boot, Jimmie Kaylor, the 17th-ranked punter in the country in average distance.

All in all the team returns 20 starters, the most Head Coach Sonny Lubick has ever had since his first year in 1993. Nine players each come from the offense and defense, in addition to two kickers.

Still, none will be watched more closely than Bell -- a challenge he's spent seven months preparing for.

"I have 100 percent confidence in what I can do," Bell said. "Maybe I'm not ready for contact yet but my goal is to put myself in a position (so) when that time comes I feel ready."

I'm glad to hear he has 2 years of eligability left. I just hope he doesn't get tagged as injury prone like Staley was. Amazing guys like McGahee and Peterson can end their college careers injured and get drafted high, but guys like Staley get screwed over.

Yeah, I still can't believe Staley was a "7th" round draft pick. Probably worse than Hass being a 6th rounder. It's making me think Leonard may drop to the 4th round.

I honestly think Leonard will be a day one pick and go in round 2. He has gotten alot of publicity, moreso than any other white skill position player in a long time. I do not think he will get the Hass treatment because Hass was not as well known and got very little media coverage despite being the BEST WR in college football during his time at Oregon St. I am still very bitter and angry about the treatment of Hass.

Yes there is another white back at CSU, and he is John Mosure. He is 5-10 190, and supposed to be good. CSU also has a couple of white blocking backs, Tim LeBlanc and Kyle VanHorn. By the way, CSU will be wearing 1957 throwback jerseys and helmets for the home game against Cal.

yes, there is, and yes, he is very good. John Mosure record breaking RB from Miami Dade district is fighting for a backup spot behind Kyle Bell. he was redshirted last season.

edit: damn Col!

Thanks guys, hopefully he can become Kyle's heir apparent. That will be a tough first game, hopefully Kyle is back and fit. They have some solid players on their team, Nick Allotta, Jesse Nading, Blake Smith and Klint Kubiak are a few that come to mind. They are one of my favourite teams, and i will follow them closely this year.

The Rams also recruited RB Phillip Morelli this year. I really like the precedent they're setting.Edited by: jared

speaking of Phillip Morrelli, you can look ata good collectionof his clips on Rivals for free.

he is my favorite kind of running back: a north-south runner, who looks to cut back. he doesn't do much of that running sideways, bouncing it outside the tackles for no reason nonsense. he makes guys looks silly with a subtle cutback, breaks a few tackles, and most importantly he picks up yards.

he also looks to have very good hands as a receiver. he looked fast, but not as fast as Sam McGuffie who is the fastest running back i've seen in a while.

Kyle Bells NFL Future will be decided over the next two years. He will have to prove without a shadow of a doubt that he is healthy and injury free.Basically,he will need to run for around 1200-1500 yards per season and prove he is durable.Even then, the stupid nfl still may or may not give him a chance.Let's hope for once that they can look past his skin color. This kid is a beast!

I'd say Bell needs to be 100% healthy and run for over 1500+ each of his last two seasons and then kick a lot of a$$ at the combine.

Scout.com listed Kyle Bell's 40 time as 4.46 from H.S. In comparison Brian Leonard was listed at 4.47 and Tim Shaw was listed at 4.44. So I'd Expect him to run around a 4.5 flat at the NFL combine if healthy which should be good enough. It was for Leonard. Times at the NFL combine are a little slower and Bell has put on some upper body weight since H.S for power.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Bell will not only have to run for 1200-1500 yards this season to get a look from the NFL he will have to improve his 4.8 per carry from his sophmore season to above 5 yards a carry to get a serious look. He was listed by various sites after his sophmore campaign at best around the tenth best RB.

That is much lower than he should have been listed, but I think part of it is that Colorado St. gets little media coverage outside of Mountain West Conference. A return to a Bowl birth for Colorado State again with a great performance by Bell could also help. Colorado State's rush attack was awful last year when Bell was injured 2.8 per carry from Gartrell Johnson "Yuck".Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Colorado State has been racking up white tailback recruits lately. They just
signed phil morelli and matt yemm for the 2007 class, and a year before
signed john mosure. This can only be a sign of things that are yet to

some good news about Kyle...
&gt; HOT TOPIC - Among the popular issues at these two-day meetings is the health of CSU running back Kyle Bell, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL after finishing second in the league in rushing in 2005. Bell has made a quick recovery from the injury, and Lubick confirmed that he could have played in a bowl game last year four months after being injured if CSU had qualified for the postseason.

the article with other news about CSU... http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/2007072 4/SPORTS/707240336/1006/SPORTS

edited to add: according to the article, it appears Matt Yemm, a quarterback in high school, is looking good as a wide receiver.

anumber of reasons, i suspect... 1) for the longest time they had to target recruits that the more high-profile University of Colorado didn't want, meaning un-wanted whites because the "real" athletes were already taken. 2) the local population of the state is almost all white. 3) they have a coach who has been there a long time and likes to utilize a power running game, and when you want somebody tough you need to find a white man. 4) they've hadvery littlesuccess with black backs and lots of success with white tailbacks. so why get off the horse mid-stream?
smiley32.gif

Kevin McDougal was the last superstar running back they had until Kyle Bell came along. in the era between those two talents, the best running threat they had at CSU was quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt, another white athlete.

when you finally open your eyes to the reality of how good white athletes can be, it is much easier to give another one an opportunity. although it must be said, they had Kyle Bell buried on the depth chart until injuries to the black backs gave him his chance.

the belief that EVERY black running back is better than ANY white back is so powerful, that very few programs will give the white kids a shot. it is that initial paradigm shift that is the most difficult to overcome. but as you can see with the perforance of Bell and the horror that was the CSU running game last season without him, all white kids need is an opportunity and often they are the best men for the job.

Thanks for helping me out with that one jimmy.
I also agree with you that whites do bring a different style of running to the
table and if the are in the right system and given a chance they can excel.
HAHA o and after living in colorado for 4 years i had 3 blacks in my school i
moved back to southeastern wisconsin and i was like woah black kids

Jimmy just hit the nail on the head. white players in general are not given a fair chance to prove themselves, having difficulty to make roster at certain position or even not being able to get on a team.

once they get their foot in the door, more often tha not, they prove themselves beyond any doubt and only most caste of coaches can can them without giving explanation.

that's why majority of great white players of today tend to be college walk ons etc. look at the NFL, i'd say that 80% of white WRs was not rectuited by best schools or had to walk on.

I ran the numbers last year. More than 40% of white NFL WR's were college walk-ons. Not sure about the percentage that went to small schools.
