KEENESBURG - She watches the game, tight, nervous, smiling, counting the yards down, writing the numbers on a program.</span>
144 yards to break the record ...</span>
Marie and Dave Bell are in the stands on this cool
October evening, watching their son Kyle rush toward the all-time state
record. They are here, with uncles and aunts and grandmas and grandpas.
It's the Bell section of the stands right now.</span>
The game begins and Brush keeps the ball for half
the first quarter. Still 144 yards to go. Marie hasn't written anything
on the program yet.</span>
Exactly 6.7 miles southwest of this stadium, down a
dirt road, across from the black mailbox, is the Bell farm. The modern
ranch-style home is surrounded by fields of huge sunflowers, now dry
and heavy with seeds, ready for harvest. It's where the Bell family -
Dave and Marie, Kyle the senior and Holly the sophomore - live and work
and play together.</span>
Kyle runs a kickoff back for a touchdown, but it still doesn't count for his rushing yards.</span>
Dave and Marie Bell seem to have somehow found the
secret. Their son is not only the best rusher in the state right now,
but he's also an A student. His little sister, Holly, also gets
straight A's in school and is a manager of the football team. "People
have asked us what the secret of raising kids is, and we really don't
know," said Dave. "We're just lucky to have two good kids."</span>
It's now halfway through the second quarter and
Kyle only has 16 yards. Brush has kept the ball so long, he hasn't had
many chances to rush.</span>
In the school next to the stadium, close to the the
overflowing trophy case, is a fold-out photo display of Weld Central's
best athletes back through the years. On this night, the pages are open
to David Bell, 1978. Running back, all-state. When he was in school,
Dave set a record for the most rushing yards in one year. His son broke
it when he was a freshman.</span>
Halftime, and Kyle only has about 35 yards. People
are starting to say he isn't going to make it. His dad sits silent, but
he knows. His mom is nervous, optimistic.</span>
"I guess we first began to see he might be good
back in the seventh grade," Dave says. "We knew he was a good athlete
when he was young, and we knew he was fast. I was pretty fast in high
school, but he's fast and big and quick."</span>
In the third quarter, the yards begin. 10 yards, another 10, 12 yards, slowly, slowly, Kyle starts closing in.</span>
Marie is a secretary at the elementary school and
Dave farms. They want their kids to stay busy at school, active in
everything, not just sports. "We also want them to do well with their
grades," Marie says. Both kids have straight A's.</span>
In the fourth quarter, the end is coming close. with 7:42 left in the game, he has 125 yards.</span>
Two hours ago, before the game started, the road to
this isolated school looked like the closing scenes of "Field of
Dreams." Headlights, all in a row, coming from different directions
toward the school out in the prairie.</span>
With 6:25 left in the game, Kyle's parents, his
sister, his girlfriend Michelle Malone come down from the stands,
waiting for the final moment. Kyle has 10 yards to go.</span>
The stands are full, people standing along the
fence, people standing along the track. They're asking, "How many more
yards?" "What's he got?" "How close?"</span>
Kyle is down to just a few yards, everybody knows.
One friend shows two fingers to Dave, pacing the sidelines, meaning
Kyle has two yards to go. He loses yards on the next two plays.</span>
There's 3:14 left in the game, and Brush gets the ball.</span>
Neither mom nor dad can stand still now, Brush is
driving the ball, eating up the clock, Their son probably won't make it
tonight. But there's hope. Marie sits against the fence, lowers her
head, looks up, stands up. She knows. "He 's gonna make it," she says.</span>
Weld Central has the ball, less than a minute. Kyle
carries once, carries again. His family in the stands are cheering.
They know. Finally, 35 seconds from the end of the game, Kyle rushes
around the right end, churns up the yards and makes it.</span>
Mom and dad and Holly and Michelle are on the field
now, and Kyle hugs each of them, handing the ball to his dad. He raises
one finger. Cheers flood the field.</span>
Afterward, asked if she's proud of her brother, Holly turns and says, "How does it look?"</span>
She's smiling, but tears are running down her cheeks.</span>
