Michael Vick

If Big Ben threw like Michael Vick does most games, he'd be booed in Pittsburgh rather than being a hero. It wouldn't matter if the team won most of its games or not. Kordell Stewart is Exhibit #1 that a lousy quarterback can win games with a good team.


Terry Bradshaw had a long learning curve, and was the weak link of the first two Pittsburgh Super Bowl winners (and the strength of the teams that won two more after that). It was readily acknowledged at the time. No one, fans or the media, pretended that Bradshaw wasa tremendous quarterback when he wasn't.
 
Vick was asked in an interview about playing Brett Favre and what he thought of him as a quarterback.

"He a Hall of Famer... he a Hall of Famer. You really have to prepare for Brent."

Yes, Mike Vick said that BRENT FAVRE is a Hall of Famer.

Listening to ESPN radio the other day, I heard Dan Patrick and a couple of other "experts" talkiing about Vick and saying we shouldn't totally evaluate him until he learns this particular offense, which can take quarterbacks 5-6 years to learn. It made me wonder if this offense was written in ancient sanscit or hieroglphics or somethng.


Five to six years to learn an offense??
 
White quarterbacks used to get several years to develop, but those days are long gone. Terry Bradshaw, who was the first pick of the 1970 draft,needed all of five seasons to begin to reach his potential. If he entered the NFL now he would end up being mentioned with the likes of Tim Couch and Cade McNown as busts.


But it's different for black QBs. Kordell Stewart had six years as a starter in Pittsburgh even though hiscomical lack of accuracy and inability to read defenses was obvious early on. Aaron Brooks goes on and on with the Saints despite chronic underachieving and red zone blundering. McNabb, Culpepper, Vick, McNair, they don't get benched for lowly white quarterbacks once they're enthroned as the starter.


Whites are given less time to develop at all positions, and are on shorter leashes even in individual games.
 
In fairness to Bradshaw, he did have to call his own plays. Nowadays, QB's go out on the field with all the plays attached to their arm and just read from it. It is a different era now. Bradshaw was handicapped because he played for a small college and was seeing pro defenses and schemes for the 1st time. He was almost like a high school QB going straight to the pro game.

Bradshaw was actually a lot like Vick. He had the great arm and could run the ball. The words used to describe him back then were words like, "stud, specimen, capable of lightning progress down the field".

The one thing he never got was the media worship. After the Steelers won their 1st Super Bowl he just went home to La. and didn't get a single endorsement. He finally got some respect after the Steelers beat the Cowboys in Super Bowl X.
 
I wasn't criticizing Bradshaw, just pointing out that he was given a time frame to develop that used to be given to all quarterbacks but is now given only to black quarterbacks while white ones are under tremendous pressure to be good immediately.The point was that some of the highly drafted white quarterbacks of recent years might not have been written off as busts if given the proper opportunity to blossom.
 
One modern quarterback who comes immediately to mind is Drew Brees. He was practically cut already and destined to be a backup the rest of his days, before he suddenly hit stride and took the Chargers to the playoffs. Now he is considered one of the better quarterbacks in the entire league.

How long did he have to develop before this happened? He played in one game in 2001; by '03 he was considered a bust.

How long has Vick been in the league? Why, oddly enough he entered the league in 2001, too. Brees had only ONE year, statistically, that was worse than Vick's ENTIRE career, yet, has Vick EVER been considered a bust?

No.

'Nuff said.
 
If Vick is now heralded as a pocket passer, and has shut up his critics after last weeks game, will the same now be said about Joey Harrington, who went 22/32 for 231 yds, and 3 TDs today against the Cards?

Fair is fair, right?
 
I say all the Caste Football members should get together and invite Michael Vick over for a blanket party.

Looks like the most dangerous weapon to ever play in the NFL is shooting blanks today. He was outplayed by and is about to lose to "Brent" Why-Hasn't-He-Retired-Yet Favre.

But you know, the only stat that counts is "wins."

Cowturd changed his tune on this morning's ESPN radio show. Instead of "he just wins games, thats all he does," we were treated to "football is a TEAM game, thats why the Packers won. They finally got some help from the running game and their defense really stepped it up. They put pressure on Vick all day long....quarterbacks don't win games by themselves.. I've said it all along..yada yada yada."

It was funnier'n hell listening to him try to back track, and the fans calling into the show wouldn't let him get away with it.
 
Vick also fumbled the ball three times (one lost to other team) and fell down once without being touched trying to avoid tacklers. He seems to do that quite often. Do you think he just loses his balance from spinning around and changing direction? Or is it possible he may have an inner ear problem?

In most cases I think it's abit of a stretch to accuse commentators of an actual anti-white agenda, as opposed to a inhaled attitude, but I think Cowturd has gotta be on a mission of some kind, at least in his sick little mind.

I bet if the Afro-centrists deciphered the hierglphics in the 'black' pyramids that they would discover Vicks playbook along with directions on flying the pyramid to the Mother Plane! LOL!!

The Monday after the Falcons beat the Dolphins and Vick had his best game as a passer, ever, I recall hearing some of the nuts on ESPN radio calling for a revamp of the quarterback passer rating system. They said that any system that doesn't account for "wins" isn't a fair system, that the quarterbacks don't get enough credit for leading their teams to victory.

The Monday after the Falcons lose to Green Bay, I recall hearing those same announcers lament that football is a TEAM GAME, and that the quarterbacks take too much of the credit and too much of the blame for wins and losses.

This is out of left field but the (fill in your own favorite superlatives) player in the game has a career qb rating of 77.8, his per attempt average is 6.8 and his completion percentage is 54.3. Doug Flutie, one of the all-time favorite whipping boys has a career qb rating of 76.4, his per attempt average is 6.8 and his completion percentage is 54.7.

Surfsider, I also did a career comparison of Flutie and Ron Mexico a while back, and came to the same conclusion as you. If you're interested in checking it out, here is the link to the thread.

I broke it down by yards per game, touchdowns by game, etc, and Vick only marginally beat out Flutie in a couple of categories. In the rest it was a statistical wash or Flutie outperformed Vick.

Funny how one guy is a perennial back up and the other is a perennial star, isn't it?

And people say there is no such thing as the caste system!

Flutie has persevered in spite of the Caste System mostly treating him poorly and has shown great longevity. He is still playing in the NFL at 43 years old. What do you think Ron Mexico will be doing when hes 43? Maybe starring from prison in another remake of The Longest Yard?
