As of now, Kevin Walter is Houston's number two receiver. He was last year too, before the Texans signed Eric Moulds, who had a poor year and was subsequently released. The team may again bring in a black journeyman to cover up for the "embarrassment" of having Walter second on their depth chart, plus they drafted black WR Jacoby Jones in the third round last month, but it's a situation worth following. Houston also has David Anderson, who saw a little action last year as a rookie.

Your completely right Don. I can imagine the Texans' front office having nightmares about having Walter start. It's really sad that these a-holes really consider having a starting white WR an embarrassment. I really wouldn't be surprised if they got Jerry Rice or Andre Rison something to cover up that white spot at WR. lol

Well, taking a quick look at the WR situation there...

19 Adams, Charlie WR 6-2 190 Hofstra 4
14 Anderson, David WR 5-10 194 Colorado State R
11 Davis, Andre' WR 6-1 195 Virginia Tech 6
80 Johnson, Andre WR 6-3 219 Miami (FL) 5
12 Jones, Jacoby * WR 6-2 210 Lane College 0
13 Mathis, Jerome WR 5-11 191 Hampton 3
83 Walter, Kevin WR 6-3 214 Eastern Michigan 5

Harry Williams is also over in NFL Europe.

The only guy who seems likely to beat out kevin is Johnson(definiately). Davis has an outside shot. Mathis and Jones are two other challengers, but I don't see them getting too much of a big shot here. They aren't polished enough, and Mathis seems to be, for now at least, more of a returner. Jones will only challenge next year if he becomes a more polished receiver.

I don't see Walter falling below number 3 as a worst case scenario, and he has a very good chance at being number 2. Anderson has a dogfight ahead of him.

Jones will probably end up ahead of him unless he bombs in camp simply because he is a 3rd round pick. Davis, Johnson and Walter are definitely also ahead, so David is fighting for the 5th spot. He'll have to find a way to beat Charlie Adams out to really stick, or he'll have to be spectacular in camp or just hope that the team keeps a 6th receiver. I think he has a good shot, but it will be tougher.

Anderson is gone. He will be released at the end of training camp. He has used up his "white eligibility". I've watched it for years now and I know how it works. He could catch everything in sight, lead all receivers in pre-season and will still be gone.

Why? The only white receivers that stick around in the NFL besides the few starters are the following:

1) the very few drafted high, teams don't want to admit they were wrong (they do this for black guys drafted high too, so it's not explicitly racial, except that few deserving white guys are drafted high)

2) exceptional athletes

3) guys that do other things good like special teams, or returning kicks.

Anderson does none of that so he's toast. Occasionally an Anderson type guy might stick around but it's rare and he has to have a special situation, say injuries or a favorite coach or something. Too bad he's a great receiver. It's really unfair.

I forgot one other subgroup of white receivers that might get to stick around: guys that lit it up in some brief playing time when all the brotha's were hurt or in jail. They can bounce around for years after that, I guess in the back of some caste-minded coaches brain they know they can perform so they keep them around----just in case.Edited by: jaxvid

I think Anderson did serve some time as KR last year. I think that Mathis was in the doghouse with Kubiak. I would like to think that David Anderson will somehow battle his ass off to make the team. All we can do is hope those whites in a position like Hass and Anderson do is to bust their asses and not give up.

I was listening to the local Houston sports radio station this morning and they interviewed Gary Kubiak, the Texans head coach. He was very high on Kevin Walter and said that he deserved to be the number 2 WR on the team. He also said that David Anderson will have a legitimate shot at the number 5 receiver. Kubiak also said that Mathis needs to step up if he wants to make the team. Overall very positive for Walter and Anderson.

I don't know if it's been mentioned before but it's worth pointing out that Kubiak's son, Klint, plays for Colorado State as a DB. There's a very good possibility that he put in a good word for David Anderson. I think Anderson sticks with the team, he looked solid in limited play last season.

It hasn't taken the NFL long to notice and Vic Carruci is already writing about how bad the Arizona receivers are in NFL cover story
the link on the home page says "Matt Schaub could prove to be an upgrade over David Carr, but Vic Carucci would feel better about Schaub's chances if Houston had one more quality receiver available."
That's one more in addition to Andre Johnson by the way.

an article about Walter, mostly favorable and complimentary but not without several mandatory elements when describing a white NFL player...

"Walter said he never became frustrated about not getting the ball more â€â€￾ another reason the coaches like him.

"I'm a team player," Walter said. "I'll do whatever coach wants me to do."

Even his coach has to put in the classic phrase "He's an overachiever". Why does Kevin have to be labled as such? Why can't he just be someone who hasd gotten better over time and someobne who has the ability from the outset? These read between the lines b.s. really irks me.

Jerome Mathis might be on the cutting block, more on this as it develops.

It's time to start playing "Where's Kevin?" This is in the current issue of The Sporting News: "The Texans signed WR Keenan McCardell to provide a veteran presence for an inexperienced receiving unit. McCardell could step in as the No. 2 receiver. Rookie Jacoby Jones, who has the ability to spread defenses, could emerge as the No. 3."

I guess that makes Walter the number four receiver and falling. Why do they need a "veteran presence" when Andre Johnson is acknowledged by most NFL experts to already be a superstar at WR? McCardell at this stage of his career is slower than most white offensive linemen, but hey he's black and a "respected leader" and that's all that counts.

Let's try and figure out what must have happened -- Walter's probably dropping pass after pass, is displaying an arrogant and selfish attitude, is unable to understand the playbook, and is frequently arguing with coaches. Or could it be the acute embarrassment the organization feels along withall the heat it's taking from the drunk white fans because Walter was number two on the depth chart all offseason?

Other enlightening snippets from this issue of TSN: "The season ending injury to S Steve Gleason (knee) is a blow to the Saints' special teams, on which he displayed a fiery attitude and relentless effort." Good White Special Teams Demon, good boy!

"49ers rookie RB Thomas Clayton has shown speed and elusiveness in practice and could put up a fight for the No. 2 job behind Frank Gore. Clayton clashed with some of his coaches at Kansas State but hasn't caused any problems since joining the 49ers." Yes, they actually praise him for not causing any problems during his first week with the 49ers.

Don't worry about it too much Don. Even if they use that veteran bullsh*t to start McCardell, I can't possibly see Jacoby Jones playing over Walter. I thought it was a joke that this kid went in the 3rd round out of LANE COLLEGE. I've seen the kid play. He's got decent athleticism, but no hands at all and no awareness on the field. Walter should be a lock for at least the 3rd spot and I figure he'll start over McCardell.

Walter will be their second WR although he will move to slot in some formations with McCardell moving in. i wouldn't worry too much about Jones or Mathis. David Anderson, however is probably as good as cut already...

I think with both of the TE's being white, having two white WR's might violate a caste rule, something like too many white players downfield, or something like that.

I hope one of their WRs makes it, but your statement is probably true, referendum.

Walter would be a perfect compliment to Andre Johnson at WR. If the Texans got the balls to start walter I think Kevin could get 60 catches at least.

Walter does have a tenuous hold on the #2 starting job, but as always his every play will be heavily scrutinized. The keys are if Gary Kubiak will be fair with him, as Walter's an obvious talent who's earned the job and Kubiak must stick with him for a reasonable amount of time. The other key is Matt Schaub -- he looks to be an upgrade over David Carr, who was battered for years because ofa terrible offensive line. If Schaub can come out of the gate and be at least a pretty good starter, Walter will benefit. Schaub should be looking for Walter on both designed and improvised plays, especially the latter when his protection breaks down as Walter will excel at finding open spaces and coming back to the quarterback when he's under pressure.

It does worry me that Owen Daniels will probably be one of the more heavily utilized tight ends in the league. A white tight end and a white starting receiver? Houston is in controversial territory.

It really is sickening how teams are actually "pushing the envelope" by having two white receiving targets ever on the field out of three. And I thought the U.S population was 70% white.

I recall the Boston Celtics were criticized by some for having a heavy white team with Larry Bird, but they were quite good I recall (won 3 championships or something of the sort lol) so it avoided the media backlash. Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

A fantasy football site I subscribe to wrote the other day that Walter had secured the number two receiving job with the Texans. But here's what they wrotetoday in their wrap-up of Houston's exhibition game against the Bears: "Walter, who failed to record a catch, had an awful drop on a 3rd down play, which can't possibly help his cause in the quest for the #2WR role."

One drop in a preseason game and they're ready to demote him. In fact the same wrap-up has this about rookie Jacoby Jones: "Jacoby Jones (sleeper alert) made some very elusive moves and looked mighty quick in corralling 4 balls for 47 yards."

I watched Walter's "drop" and it wasn't a drop it wasa good defensive play where the defender stripped the ball out of his hands, but the announcers also called it a drop, along withthe mandatory TV shot of Walters as they criticized him. He will be cut no slack by the media and the drunk white fans.

It more and more appears that the Houston organization can't handle having a good white TE and a good white WR, as a black rookie from a very small school has been simply "amazing." How fortuitous. From the Texans "Training Camp Practice Report - Day 17".

Jacoby joins the ones: Wide receiver Jacoby Jones has had quite a week, and his stellar performance in the preseason opener against Chicago was capped off today by Kubiak with the announcement that Jones has been moved to the number-one offensive unit in some play packages and may see a start at the second receiver spot Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals.

"He just continues to make plays," Kubiak said. "This kid just handles himself like he's been doing it a long, long time. We need to study him pretty hard and make sure we go get some more like that because he has made a lot of ground pretty quick."

Jones knows that he has advanced quickly up the depth chart, but he knows that he isn't close to proclaiming that he's "made it" in the NFL.

"I don't think it will ever just be a time where I've made it, because I'm still working to get better," Jones said. "I hope it's a long time from now, because I want to keep getting better and better and better."

I picked up Walter in the last Rd in my fantasy draft(I mean come on you'd know he'd be available). I'm hoping he's this year's Mike Furrey but I doubt it since 98 catches is a tough act to follow especially when you play for the Texans. Walter will hopefully get me 60+ catches and 6+ TDs. That would be great production from a last RD draft pick.

Here's the latest on Walter. Looks like he still has the #2 job, but the Jacoby Jones hype continues to build.
<DIV =storyline align=center>Texans have plenty of receiving options opposite Andre Johnson

Rookie Jacoby Jones had a 91 yard punt return for a touchdown Saturday, and also a receiving TD, while Walter had just one catch for 9 yards. The pressure on Gary Kubiakfrom the media and fans to demote Walter in favor of Jones will really hit a fever pitch this week.
