Wlad gave it a good go. Respect to Joshua for winning. Respect to Klitshcko for even getting in the ring.
Considering his age, he has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. He pushed Joshua much harder than anyone else.
I think Klitschko should hang em up now. He's had a great career, he's presumably got millions in the bank, he's got a nice family, he hasn't taken too many shots to the head and he isn't punch drunk. He can walk away now and be Joshua's trainer or something, or maybe train a young White fighter.
He's got a right to the rematch per the contract, but I don't know about getting in the ring again. I prefer to remember Klitschko as he was, rather than as he is. I mean as he is, as an athlete. It's over in-ring, and it's okay.
As a man, outside of the sport, it's just beginning. He's a 41 year old with a PhD. He's a young professor. He can teach, he can write books, give speeches. He's got life by the nutsack.
So even in a loss, he wins.
I like Joshua a lot better than David Haye, at least. It would have sucked to have David Haye beat Wlad. At least Joshua doesn't come off like a jerk. Reverse the colors, and he's a lot more likeable, at least to me, than Tyson Fury, who acts like an annoying Chav stereotype. Fury being White, I still like him better than Joshua, but it's something to consider. It could be worse. Joshua at least gave the great, old champ his respect, man to man, and champion to champion.
Eventually, every torch goes out or needs to be passed.
One day Usain Bolt will come in second. Or third. Or DNF.
One day Michael Phelps will realize he can't keep up anymore.
Happened to Jeremy Wariner. Remember him?
What I don't like about this fight is that a lot of DWFs will use Joshua's win as a means to discredit Wladimir's entire legacy, as if he was never anything special, and was an overhyped bum.
We could list any number of great colored fighters who hung around too long—and lots were way younger than 41 when they lost decisively—and were bested by the next up and comer, and how no DWFs think less of them (Oscar De La Hoya [White but whatever], Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Bernard Hopkins come to mind), but we'd be fighting a losing battle.
Best to concentrate on the fact that there are still lots and lots of good White fighters out there to cheer for, even now that Wladimir has had his day in the sun.
I for one am looking forward to the June match between Kovalev and Andre Son of a BIIIIITCH Ward.
Boxing ebbs and flows. Here White fighters dominate, there Black fighters dominate, then it comes around again.
That's sports.
Sadly, a lot of DWFs see Joshua's victory as putting the heavyweight crown and belt rightfully on a Black skull and waist. Doesn't matter whose, as long as the person is Black.
Thanks Wladimir Klitschko, for everything. You were and are great.
And now here's to GGG decapitating the next Great Black Hope at middle.
