ISHPEMING - Bubba Croley didn't know it, but on Oct. 7, at a birthday party for him and his cousin, he was going to receive a new Jordy Nelson jersey as one of his presents.
A Green Bay Packers fanatic, Bubba had chosen Nelson as his favorite Packer.
Instead, Bubba died in the early hours of Oct. 6, his family having been in a horrible accident with an alleged drunk driver while they were on their way to the Green Bay area for the family celebration.
His mother, Jodi, and sisters Taylor and Gabby were also injured and are still recovering from broken bones.
Yet Nelson was to touch the family's life in ways they did not anticipate.
After the accident, Bubba's father, Christopher, was speaking to someone about his desire to get an authentic game jersey of Nelson's for a shadowbox tribute he wants to make for his son, whose given name was also Christopher.
"One of my dear friends at the Marquette Police Department (David Schneiderhan) overheard that conversation. His sister knows someone who's friends with someone in the Packers organization," Mr. Croley said.
Later, Croley overheard his friend on the phone with someone and grew concerned from the bits of conversation he was hearing.
"I thought something was wrong with one of his family members," he said. Instead, Schneiderhan was trying to help make that wish come true.
"Then Thursday night, late, Dave's sister Tammy arrived and gave us a Packer flag, a Packer pen and this helmet autographed by Jordy Nelson, who wrote 'rest in peace, Bubba' on it."
It could be that Jordy has been reading Bigunreal's rants and is playing through his injuries on game-day, but then when the week starts, he needs a bit of treatment. He'll be ok.
Certain names are expected to be included in discussions of the NFL's top receivers: Calvin Johnson, A.J. Green, Dez Bryant, Larry Fitzgerald.
A name one rarely hears among those in that top tier? Green Bay's Jordy Nelson.
And while everyone was looking the other way, Nelson has climbed to the No. 2 overall wide receiver spot, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required)—behind only Detroit's Johnson.
He's seventh in yards with 649, tied for third in touchdowns with seven and second in percentage of passes caught among receivers with 30-plus receptions, at 75 percent ...

As Don has noted several times, there have been many instances in which NFL Network’s Michael Irvin will heap unbelievable praise (by corperate media standards) upon deserving white athletes. Here, he chooses Nelson for his “He’s a Beast!†segment. Video…

Be sure to take notice of Deon Sanders’ expression after Irvin concludes his animated dialog for Nelson's great game against the Bears. Sanders looks highly disintereested, almost holdng back laughter as Irvin priases the superstar flanker. His innermost thoughts likely include: “mahn, dis heer nigga iz a Unkle Tomm fuh reel!â€
CAPTION: Holding Back Laughter?
During his time on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,†I remember Irvin hyping Matt Jones after several big performances. Also, in the beginning of the 2011 season, Wes Welker was on pace to break Jerry Rice’s single season receiving record. Irvin did an interview with Wes and was highly complimentary and respectful.
How pathetic that a two time (accused) rapist and literal crack addict such as Irvin is becoming the “voice of reason†on NFLN.
Speaking of being sick, you would have never known it from his performance, but Packers receiver Jordy Nelson apparently had an upset stomach on Sunday during the 33-28 win over the Chicago Bears that sent the Packers to the playoffs.
Nelson caught a career-high 10 passes for 161 yards in the game at Soldier Field.
“He was throwing up on the bus afterwards,” Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Tuesday on his ESPN Milwaukee radio show. “It was kind of gross.”
Nelson made no mention of it after the game. In fact, one of the things he talked about was how pleased he was that he made it through all 16 games without any health problems after missing four games last season because of a hamstring injury.
In playing 96.5 percent of the Packers’ offensive snaps this season, Nelson led the team and established career highs for catches (85) and receiving yards (1,314).
“It’s been great just to play every game,” Nelson said after the regular-season finale. “The numbers will happen if you get to play 16 of them. Last year was a struggle for multiple reasons, I’ve never experienced that. This year has been great. I’ve been healthy, haven’t missed anything and knock on wood hopefully it stays that way. It’s been fun. It’s been up and down, though, but it’s been fun and it makes it that much more enjoyable now that we made the playoffs.”
