Joe aka Brian Leonard Jr., embracing his new role.

Martinek hopes to get acclimated to FB position

Throughout his time at Hopatcong High, Joe Martinek was a fan of the Rutgers football team. His favorite player, he said, was Brian Leonard.

When he arrived at Rutgers a year after Leonard concluded his accomplished career, Martinek would see the former fullback in the Hale Center weight room working out during his NFL off-season.

“I watched him when I was in high school,’’ Martinek said, “and I've gotten the privilege to get to know him and work out with Brian the last few years. I’ve talked to Brian a lot. He’s definitely taught me a lot.’’

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano can only hope Leonard’s wisdom will rub off on Martinek as he transitions to the fullback position this summer.

“I think it’s very important to what we’re doing offensively, to what we’re getting back to doing offensively, that we have a guy that is athletic like Joe and once he gets the ball in his hands can make things happen,’’ said Schiano, who compared Martinek to Leonard during his Big East media day remarks on Tuesday. “We got a lot of mileage out of Brian Leonard when we moved him to that position from tailback and I hope that we can repeat history with Joe.’’

Martinek was switched to fullback from tailback last spring, but has yet to practice at his new position after injuries shelved him for the entire camp. Martinek was fully cleared to practice this summer, and he says the mental repetitions he gained last spring will help him adapt to his new role.

“I was in every meeting answering questions and watching film,’’ said the 6-0, 220-pound Martinek, who will get his first taste of his new position when preseason camp begins Friday. “I wasn’t just standing on the sideline — I was watching my position specific. It’s a new position. But it’s not too far from running back. I just have to block people now.’’

Since Leonard's final season in 2006, Rutgers has struggled to find consistent results from the fullback spot. While Jack Corcoran proved to be a three-year starter, the recently-signed 49ers fullback didn't produce much statistically.

How to screw a White RB 101

I'd like to write a little update on former running back turned fullback, Jersey Joe. Joe came out of HS as the leading rusher in the very competitive state of New Jersey. After hard work and poor performance by his darker teammates, Joe got to run the ball towards the end of his freshman year to a tune of 404 yards and 5.3 yards a carry. This carried over to his only full season as a starter in which he produced 967 yards & 9 TDs at 4.7 yards per attempt. Joe seemed like a star in the making. Junior year everything went wrong. Joe struggled on the field and with injuries. The team struggled running the ball. Flash forward to this season. Head wigger in charge, Greg Schiano, who had famously shifted Brian Leonard to full back, was back at it again. With some highly recruited supa-affletes coming to New Brunswick, it was time for Joe to play human battering ram.

Now how have these "real" running backs performed thus far? Putrid would be an understatement. Jawan Jamison is getting the most carries and is averaging a measly 3.0 yards per carry with only 1 touchdown. 4 star freshman Savon Huggins is the "power" back and the main reason Joe was converted. He poaches touchdowns and averages a pathetic 2.7 yards per attempt. Rounding out the field of guys who get more carries are DeAntwan Williams averaging 3.0 YPC and Jeremy Deering with 3.9 YPC.

"Fullback" Joe, on the other hand, has 97 yards rushing on only 12 carries (less attempts than the aforementioned losers) for a whooping 8.1 YPC. He's also 3rd on the team in receiving and has a 60 yard TD catch. Pretty good for a fullback.

With the massive struggles of his array of black quarterbacks (in this case the running variety), shouldn't Greg The Negrophile give more carries to Jersey Joe? A sane coach would. We know why he won't.

I'm very familiar with this kid from my area, Freethinker. He has legit 4.4 speed and is the all time rushing yards leader in NJ high school football. He as highly ranked as a pro prospect but now it looks as if he'll never get that opportunity. If a coach had done this to a black running back he'd be charged with a hate crime.

Freethinker, I'm going to put your post on Joe on the right-hand column of the homepage unless you don't want me to.

I noticed he is getting swing passes in the flat and is second in total yardage for the backs. With the lack of production by the tailbacks you would think Martinek would get at least half the touches. I fear because the Big East is sooo soft these days, coaching personal errors aren't criticized by the NYC area media, like the Jets and Giants moves are.

Not to be an optimist but I think Joe should get a combine invite. If he shows well he will have an outside shot of getting drafted.

Also, Is Gary Nova white? He is Rutgers QB now.

Based on his skin tone, non-traditional Euro hairline (his is way too straight, like an African) and head shape (cone shaped), I would assume he's probably Puerto Rican, of mixed decent. He actually looks like he's from Egypt or Libya in photos, but I doubt that because there are so few in football. He could be a Jersey Shore type, but I doubt that, also...He reminds me (looks wise) of Aaron Hernandez of the Patriots.

Here's a little more on Martinek and the Rutgers situation.

Martinek stats:

2008(fr) - 76/404, 5.3ypc, 4td
2009 - 206/967, 4.7ypc, 9td
2010 - 85/276, 3.2ypc, 4td
2011 so far - 17/115, 6.8ypc, 0td - also has 217yd receiving

I believe Joe was moved to FB in 2010, he was the fourth leading rusher on the team, was first in 2009. Probably used as a short yardage back that year(4 tds on 276yd).

What's ridiculous is how these black bums are running this year. The top rushers for Rutgers so far in 2011 are freshmen Jawan Jamison, Savon Huggins and sophomore Jeremy Deering(all black).

Their stats are, as of Nov. 16, 2011:

Jawan Jamison - 165/547, 3.3ypc, 4td
Savon Huggins - 56/146, 2.6ypc, 5td
Jeremy Deering - 36/132, 3.7ypc, 0td

Rutger's brilliant plan is to run freshmen scrubs over a proven, experienced back like Martinek in his senior season. Veteran running backs in their last year are usually given preference over freshmen backs, unless they are white it seems.

Just another White RB moved to FB.
It's his natural position, I don't get what you are all whining about.
Nothing to see here, move along.

All 5 of Rutgers starting O-linemen this year are black, no wonder they stink so bad at running the ball. According to this CF thread, only 4 or so white starters overall.

That's the fastest "fullback" I've ever seen in my life.

From the video: "He has the humility to play fullback." The "humility" to put up with stupidity and racial pandering that's against his own best interests.

I haven't had as much time recently to post, I just wanted to say, "thanks" to Freethinker and everyone else on CF that takes the time to post these white athletes who continue to show their abilities. Hopefully if they keep making these kinds of plays, more white RB's will breakthrough to the "NFL".

Does anybody remember if Leonard got a combines invite as a fullback or tailback? The situation is pretty similar in terms of the way Jersey Joe and Leonard have been used. The only difference is that there is no reason for Martinek not getting the lions share of touches with the production that the tailbacks are doing this year. I remember Leonards' 40 time was what cemented his ability to play tailback on Sundays. Only **** Vermeil still spouted the infamous line"Yeah, but I like him better at fullback" (after Mayock stated that proves he can play tailback on Sundays).

At his current size you would have to compare to fullbacks that played in the 70's or 80's. He is basically the same size as Matt Suhey or Mike Guman(who was originally a tailback that was moved to fullback when Eric ****erson was drafted), but his skill set resembles Larry Centers or Tim Tindale. The best thing for him would be to drop a fast time in the 40 yard dash so that he could be thought of as possible utility tailback who can play fullback too.

It's been a while since I posted last and I just wanted to credit Freethinker for the homepage article. I'm trying to fill my life with more optimism. Stuff like this Martinek screw job aggravate me too much. Martinek has averaged 4.5 YPC for his career and this Jamison kid averaged 3.9 this year after starting the year VERY SLOW before playing with mediocre efficiency. Plus most of his big yardage games came against weak rush defenses other than the West Virginia game. Martinek was a seasoned senior who had paid his due and put in his time. Not only did Greg SH*TANO heartlessly bench him his senior year, he did it at the expense of the team.

I like the article on the homepage, it was quite persuasive. Also worth mentioning is that Savon Huggins who ran for a PATHETIC 2.6 YPC also fumbled 4 times this year on a mere 56 carries (twice inside the 10 yard line) before tearing his ACL. My cousin sent me a cut out article from the NJ Star Ledger mentioning the Savon Huggins situation and another article mentioning that Martinek could be key to getting the run game going...but alas it didn't happen. Martinek was screwed plain and simple. If he were black and the two underachieving black freshman were white the media would have had a hey day of negative coverage over it.

Another ridiculous thing is that Huggins is now ranked the 11th tailback for the 2015 NFL draft class from NFLdraftscout when Martinek never broke above the mid 20s (even in his 900 yard year at a 4.7 YPC clip). It's CFL for me these days. I try to avoid thinking about my time in Jersey and WHITE RIVALS as much as I can.

Nice Pro Day for Joe, including a blazing 4.40 in his second 40 run, the fastest of anyone on Rutgers.

What a shame that a 6'0" 200 pound running back with 4.40 speed and great running skills can't be a running back in the NFL because he's White. As the article below on his Pro Day notes, Martinek can only hope to follow Brian Leonard's footsteps and aspire to be a "fullback":

It's absurd that any player who is that fast would ever be considered to play fullback. A position which in the modern NFL is simply an offensive lineman lined up in the backfield. I noticed that Mohammed Sanu ran a 4.41 which is very low compared to his incredibly slow time at the combine. That leads me to say that the times are more likely .1 seconds slower or so. That being said 4.5 or 4.55 is plenty fast for a running back with power, 26 reps on the bench, like Martinek. I will keep my fingers crossed that a team will take him to play RB. If not there's always the gap-toothed wigger now in Tampa Bay who may enjoy screwing him around for a few more years.

Absolute bs! Martinek is the all time leader in NJ high school football history and he's way better than Kwoshon Moreno who is also from Jersey. I don't know who to be more pissed about, Ray Van Peenan or Joe Martinek getting screwed.

Great news for Joe Martinek! I hope he gets lucky and gets on a team that eventually will have to put him at RB as Peyton Hillis finally got his opportunity, but I think his attitude should be more aggressive.

Scarlet Scuttlebutt has him quoted as saying,"I'm selling myself as, whatever you need me for."

It's very disappointing that a white RB with these measureables has to stoop to just happy to be here mentality and I hope I can just contribute when clearly he has the talent to be a starting RB in the NFL!

I may be out of line here, but I hope some of the incoming backs next year, Burkhead, Line, McGuffie, etc. come in and say, I'm here to compete for the starting RB position, period!
