Joe ran the ball 24 times for 128 yards and a touchdown. What a performance on national tv. He should get the game ball. I would put him as the 3rd best white running back. Jake Sharp when healthy is still a little bit better. We can't forget about Wegher and Mosure as well.

Joe Martinek is a stud though. No doubt about it! Great game for the kid. Go Rutgers!

After an amazing run by Martinek (in which he should have been tackled behind the line of scrimmage, but spun with his back nearly hitting the ground and popping up and running for a first), Craig James, Chris Fowler and the Bachelor decided to talk about the Heisman race for about 5 minutes. 4 of those were devoted convincing the public that Mark Ingram should get the Heisman and they also named of 5-6 other candidates. NO MENTION OF TOBY, even coming off his 220+ running performance. I think having two excellent white running backs in their minds at the same time is too much for them. Or they think it's too much for the American public.

The play by play announcer also called Joe a fullback!
When Savage couldn't throw the ball to him on the right sideline, b/c he was well covered, the talking head said:
"Savage tried to get the ball to Joe Martinek, the fullback, but he was well covered".

Craig James seems like he is pretty fair to white RBs as an announcer. He gave serious credit to Sam McGuffie when he ran all over Notre Dame last year in the game he announced. He said about Sam,
"He's like a bunny rabbit with the way he cuts and bounces around on the field".
I doubt he'd refer to a black tailback as a "bunny rabbit", but I still took it as a compliment about Sam's rare agility. James later said, "you can't do much better than McGuffie did today" and he gave serious accolades to Sam's high school career.

P.S: Fightingtowin, I agree with your assessment that, tonight, James chickened out about the opportunity to give serious props to two white RBs (one as a Heisman candidate) compared to only one black- at a "black" position in one short talking point. Two white RBs and one black in a 75% white country...my how racist!...lol. James should know better, as he was the last white man that was allowed to be a featured runner in the NFL. I did hear Craig James saying that Jordan Shipley deserves serious consideration for the Heisman. In fact, I hit the jackpot tonight -- I only turned on the Rutgers game briefly twice, once when they were hyping Shipley, and the other time right when Joe made his 37 yard TD run.

That's true Don, I guess we should stay optimistic. With all the compliments Martinek got- and the talk of Shipley as a legit Heisman candidate- the compliments for skill players of different races was more evenly divided tonight.

USF played bad enough tonight, that their coal black offense didn't get many compliments (although they kept referring to how good B.J Daniels was prior to tonight), but I heard the announcers bring up how talented black true freshman Dion Lewis of Pitt and Rutgers' backup De'Antwan Williams are at tailback. Throw in a half white, half Polynesian like Ryan Matthews and white Toby Gerhart in their Heisman talk and you'd have true "diversity" talk from the booth guys.

Let's hope Joe has three more solid games to break 1,000 yds. He's 271 yards away, so I don't think it's impossible. But you never know with the erratic amount of carries Joe has been getting.

Don, I thought I might have heard Shipley's name as I was walking into the room, but thought "Naaaahhh." lol That's great. Looks like there might be a white RB and white WR for the Heisman ceremonies.

Isn't there a "stereotype" that Whites are "too muscular/too big-boned" to excel at running back or wide receiver?

I bring this up because Martinek has massive calves. Looking at the picture of Ryan Wolfe in his thread, he appears to have a larger build as well.

In Caste System lore, ONLY small-boned, thin blacks can be "real" skill-position players. At CF, we know otherwise. Having big calves or big ankles doesn't mean that someone lacks athleticism. The discrimination against White RBs is utterly insane!

In the modern NFL yes. If you look up star tailbacks from the 60's to 20's most of the star White backs were small boned(relatively) tailbacks who didn't break 200 pounds. Ie the King and the Galloping Ghost.

Yes the thing about calves and ankles is ridiculous. Calves are one of the muscles that the looks are simply genetic, and there's not much you can do in increase or shrink the size. Also, it happens to be a muscle that it doesn't hurt to work out every day. If you strengthen your calves it won't really show in size until a really, really long time later.

Also, the other false notion is that all blacks have smaller calves. I've seen blacks with huge calves. Actually, what's funny is a black athlete was trying to tell me about the calf thing, so we compared and ours were actually the same size (mine are medium size). But of course he pointed out a teammate with huge calves, to which I said you can find different size examples anywhere.

The way that article is written, there is almost no way a typical DWF would be able to connect the dots.

I notice that two posters at the ESPN article have subtley brought up the main issue regarding Martinek's recruiting, but no one else is biting! I guess that it's far too complicated for all of those DWF's out there.

That and the fact that the average American male is scared to death of talking honestly about race. God forbid they get called a racist!

Thanks for the link NJfan feel free to add in man!! Funny how Vai Taua is getting noticed out there in Nevada but Lippincott has all but dissapeared. He has John Clay as his number 3 back, Iagree Clay is good, but he still has a LOT of room to grow. First of all he fumbles a lot,his fumble against Northwestern proved to seal the deal for the Cats to go on and win that game. Funny thing is ESPN doesn't seem to remember any of John's fumbles they have zero listed in the 2009 season. http://espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=236715

Northwestern kept track of the stat though. It's in the 2009 section of Brian Peters player bio.

Not to mention John was a lean 6'1 220 pounds coming out of high school, ran a 4.5He has now ballooned up to 247, cmon that much weight in 2-3 years should not be acceptable. So I question his dedication to his body. I doubt he could even sniff a 4.5 at his current weight... Anyways not to sidetrack from Martinek, I'm happy as hell for the kid. It looks like his perseverence has paid off. Edited by: celticdb15

I know Joe is listed as the starter in the college football preview but some sources say that he is still competing for the starting job. Hopefully this is not true.

For white tailbacks the competition never ends. They have to be dominant in every practice, every game, and even win in the training room (must have the best measurables). Any average performance will result in a permanent loss of a starting job. Any known injury will result in a permanent loss of a starting job. Even if they manage to succeed in all the above listed criteria, they still only have a 50% chance to retain their starting job over the next "hot incoming Rivals150 black runningback".

I think things are improving just a bit though Riddlewire. I saw lots of fans commenting on Scout.com about whether De'Antwan Williams should see a larger role as the scatback or even start late last year. Very few thought Williams deserved to be the starter, but a good deal thought he might earn 1/3 of the carries or so by the end of last year as a backup 3rd down back/ scatback. I saw this as a positive sign because (like it or not) Williams is talented as a scatback- although he's not the all round Terrell Davis/Shaun Alexander type workhorse talented back Martinek is (btw Martinek is a little faster than those guys). I also was happy Schiano stuck with Joe after originally replacing Jersey Joe with Jourdon Brooks for a few games after one bad game by Joe. Brooks had some struggles again and then the job was given back to Joe who worked his tail off to keep impressing coaches! Martinek had a couple off games- late in the year last year, but WAS NOT REPLACED! Schiano might be credited with the trend of making it acceptable to play a white RB with Leonard! It soon carried on to LSU's championship team with Hester. As much as it pained people on this site to see Leonard's role reduced for Rice as a senior, I'd have to say that fans realize just how good Rice is. Most Rutger's fans know Leonard is talented, they just think Rice is better, people aren't saying the same things by favouring De'Antwan Williams over Martinek late last year on the Scout.com message boards!

Joe Martinek is practicing again. His hamstring is close to healed. This article clearly states that Joe is the clear favourite to be Rutger's starting tailback- and everything I've read says Schiano has faith in him. De'Antwan Williams was supposed to seize the backup role, but has largely dissappointed along with most of the other backup tailbacks so far in practices:
Jersey Joe Shows he's got Game!
