Little was a good role model for white sprinters. At one point he shared the American record for the indoor 200 meters. He also ran a wind aided 19.94 outdoors. I liked the fact that he refused to be intimidated and that never gave up.

Wariner's PB of 43.93 is the seven fastest time of all time in the 400. That's a real thorn in the side of caste system proponents and I love it...keep sticking it in, Jeremy!

I don't know a lot about track but it appears that Wariner has something going against him, margin of diminishing returns. That is, it's a lot harder to lose the two tenths of a second from 20.6-20.4 than it is to lose that time from 20.4-20.2. With that in mind, I'm rooting for him

Little until recently I think had the unofficial record of fastest 100 metre time by a white American. I know back in the early 80's there was a blonde sprinter who was half white who most people assumed was white who ran about a flat 10, but Little had a pb about 10.16. I think John Woods has the record now at 10.15..... Little reminded me of a poormans Kenteris(well maybe he was better as Kenteris is the greek version of Jones.........)

I believe Little's fastest time is 10.13, which means he is still the fastest white American. Woods' time was at altitude, so it is not really comparable. I think his best non-altitude time is 10.25.

Wariner supposedly ran 20.37 today for the 200m, but I have not been able to confirm that.

That was an old bio, he did a sub 45, which was an unofficial white record until Wariner had his 2004 breakout year. Also the blonde sprinter who ran a 10.01 was Jeff Phillips who had a white mother but insisted he was black, he was dubbed a blonde hope by sports illustrated or something in the early 80's.........

Kevin Little is without question, the best all around white sprinter the US has had in the last 25 years.

Aside from Micheal Johnson who really has run that wide range of times. A 10.1 time would make you the fastest runner in most countries over the century and a sub 45 would do the same. He also had to beat out the deepest pool of runners to qualify for the world teams. The only problem for his overall exposure was that he was always snake bitten in Olympic years.........

The Drake Relays cannot get here fast enough.I'm so pumped up to see Wariner try to pull his first double victory in a long time. The last time would probably be in high school if my memory serves me right.Wariner is on a mission to be a complete sprinter! Not just the best 400 meters guy in the world, but the best 200/400 sprinter in the world.Coach Cldye Hart expects the best from his athletes and Wariner is up for the challenge. What will the US Media do if Wariner can dominate both events? They will pull their hair out.lol.This kid has me smiling from ear to ear.Prove them all wrong Jeremy. We are pulling for you!

Apparently Wariner split a 43.1 or 43.2 on his 4x400 relay at the Texas Relays yesterday.

NICE.

Great article from the IAAF.org website on Jeremy Wariner. They interview him on his upcoming goals over the next couple of years.Don Wasall has posted it on the front page of Caste for you guys but it is also still over at the Iaaf.org website, just scroll down to the Wariner article.

Wariner wants to try and win the gold medal in both the 200 and 400 meters at the next olympics in 2008!This is what I predicted he would do although many doubted his ability to run the deuce.I have always known that his pure speed is virtually untapped as of yet.He will go sub 20 and eventually also break MJ's World Record in the 400.I guarantee it as long as he doesn't have a career ending injury. He can go so much faster.

Jeremy will be running a 400 meters race this weekend in Texas at the MJ Classic.Look for a time in the low 44 second range.Next weekend he will run both the 200 & the 400 at the Drake Relays.Look out for Wariner in 2006!He will be the best role model in all of track.Keep it up Wariner.

He could do it if he can be a consistent flat 20 guy. The 200 metres is usually a wide open race as many of the top sprinters would rather concentrate on 100 as this event is more glamourous. Aside from Usain Bolt right now their aren't any real 200 metre guys. Most top 200 guys are really 100 metre specialists.......

Wariner opened up the outdoor season today with his first 400 meter race at the MJ Invitational. He ran a 44.12 in the win.He won by a landslide.Yes you heard me right,a 44.12! That is off the charts for a opening race in April. This kid will break the world record in the next 2 years.Possibly this year the way he is running already. It's flipping April!UNBELIEVABLE!! Way to rock & roll Wariner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm suprised that you guys haven't talked about Wariner at all? This kid is just amazing.I'm still almost shaking my head in disbelief at the time he ran. That 200 meters next weekend could be very special. It would make my weekend to see him run a sub 20 in April! The sky is the limit for this kid.Way to go Jeremy!!

I was just over at trackshark.com and was reading that one of the other sprinters in the 400 meters race with Wariner said that Jeremy shut it down for the last 20-30 meters. He could have actually gone in the 43 second range for this early in the season.Wariner is making everyone take notice. This is not a major championship year but I think it might be a plan to go for the record in 2006.Wariner wants to make sure that everyone knows that he owns this event. He wants to put the record out of everyones reach.I hope he can just stay healthy because he is simply amazing.Maybe someday soon,he will even run a couple of 100 meters races just to show how he is a complete sprinter.MJ almost was a sub 10 guy and Wariner could be very close in the next few years too!

Finally made it back to my favorite site. I'm not sure if one of Wariner's
opponents could tell if Jeremy shut it down early in last week's 400, but
friends of mine who were there said he looks stronger this year, and
looked to be turning off the jets at the end of the stretch to avoid forcing
himself. It's early in the season! That said, it's possible he may go the
whole year and not run faster, but based on his performances from
previous seasons (including HS), I will not be surprised to see 43.6 - 43.7
out of this kid this season. I think that he is probably putting in more
work for the 200 than he or his handlers will admit, and this year will
probably tell them whether or not to persue the double in the WC's and
Oly Games. Personally, I think he has enough in his wheels to run with the
top 200 meter guys.

I wrote a while ago about the "Wariner" effect, that he would influence
some young guns and it would take a few years to show, but more white
kids would be showing up in the sprints. It is starting to happen, and I
have little doubt it's due to this skinny white kid winning a sprint Gold at
the Oly's and following up with a dominating win at the World Champs
(with another white American - Andy Rock - finishing 2nd!) I still think
the first sub 10 is going to come from someone who isn't on the radar
right now, and more will follow. White guys are now believing they can do
it in the 400. Wariner can show that it can be done in the deuce, and
then the 100 will follow. People take their cues from those around them
- look at what is happening in boxing with all the white fighters coming
to the fore, never mind the overwhelming dominance in NHB.

I was at the Arcadia Invitational a couple of weeks ago, and David Klech is
indeed an awesome talent, he looks like he'll break 35 seconds in the 300
hurdles this year - never mind his talent in so many other events. I swear
it's hard to decide whether to watch him or watch the black spectators
who were agape - and not a few looking a bit peeved - while this lanky
white kid ran down fields in two races filled with Jon Entine's Supermen.
Too bad he's not concentrating on the HJ etc. as much this year, after
going over 7ft as a junior.

Klech really is amazing. I saw an article a couple of weeks ago that said he ran the 800 in a dual meet and won it in 1:53.1! I agree with you Colonel regarding the Wariner effect(see SteveB's post on Texas HS'ers) but it will be a slow progression I think, esp. considering where track stands in terms of fan interest in this country. Have to hope that Wariner is around and dominating the next Olympics or else he'll be seen as an anomaly. In my dreams I see Wariner doubling and Klech getting 400 hurdles gold. By the way Colonel, what do you think is the state of T&F in America in the wake of Balco? Same old, same old? Or has testing tightened up? Or do you think some have been scared away from cheating with 'roids, HGH etc...

Surfsider - I wasn't aware he hit 1:53 - I know he hit 1:55 at the
beginning of the season while running three other events. He's built like
a very tall miler. I'd like to see him run the 800, but in the interest of
punching another hole in the caste system I think he should stay in the
hurdles/sprints.

I don't think the Balco mess has changed much of anything in track - it
just hurt some of the people associated with Balco. The system will still
make excuses and apologies for blacks. Look at Gatlin's weak excuse
when he was caught, and he was off to the games and gold. Does anyone
think a white American athlete could use the same excuses? Marion Jones
has yet to be suspended, she's as indignant as Barry Bonds and just as
guilty. It's the same old "Don't get them mad..." crap some officials have
when dealing with blacks. This is coupled with a certain crowd who revel
in trying to tilt things in sports to make them non-white endeavors. Same
crowd who are the trainers behind some of the African distance runners
- no they're not all dirty, but they aren't all clean, either - and officials
cover for them like no tomorrow. (Look at Sepeng - caught using drugs,
and within a couple of days the "extraordinary circumstances" stories/
defense were out and running. He'll probably get off no matter what is
said regarding punishment. At least he's on the downside of his career)

Drug use is rampant among sprinters, and of course heavy among the
weight crowd. It's interesting that the throwers have to endure all the
speculation. Wait, no it isn't. They're 99.9% white. Meanwhile, sprinters
who are more blown out than any natural bodybuilder are canonized by
the press.

But I'm still a track fan. A fan of NHB. My interest in boxing has been
restored to what it used to be - due to recent developments ; ).

Wariner came in second with a 20.19. 7th fastest time in the worldoutdoors this year. Not bad for a 400 guy learning the 200!

Wariner did very well - he does need to work on some things. He went
too hard the 60 meters or so (but it did show he has great leg speed) and
that probably fouled him up a bit when he hit the straight - you guys who
have run the 200 know what I mean. Considering the weather and the
competition, not bad at all. With his 'neophyte' status in the event, you
can bet the 'top dogs' are definitely thinking about him now.

Wariner was beaton on his last visit to teh UK by Tim Benjamin, who is currently making a comeback from injury.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/4986886.stm

Tim Benjamin will return to competitive action in June after missing the Commonwealth Games through injury.
Britain's leading 400m runner, who would have been a realistic gold medal hope in Melbourne if fit, has been blighted by a persistent groin injury.

Benjamin will run in Oslo on 2 June, before the Norwich Union British Grand Prix in Gateshead on 11 June.
"I can't wait for the start of the new season. My training regime has really picked up after the injury," he said.

"My body is in one piece and I'm really looking forward to competing in front of a British crowd - I'll be looking to get back to winning ways again as soon as possible.

"With the Norwich Union British Grand Prix coming on the back of my first appearance this season in Oslo, it's a great chance to come back at the highest level.
"I wanted to get myself straight back into the fight, so to speak, it has worked for me in the past.

"My main aim is winning the European Championships and I've got no problem in stating that as my target for this season."

In Benjamin's last race he went to sixth on the all-time British rankings for the 400m with a 44.56 seconds run at the World Athletics Final last September.

Prior to that he had beaten Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner at Crystal Palace, and was the only British male athlete to make a track final at the World Championships in Helsinki.

The 24-year-old sees the Gateshead meeting as a chance to prove to his home crowd that last year's performance at Crystal Palace was no one-off.

"This is a real opportunity to put my injury worries behind me and continue where I left off at Crystal Palace last year.

"I love racing in Britain with the passionate crowd and the reaction you get when they announce your name," Benjamin added.

"You don't get anything like that anywhere in Europe and it should be an awesome experience when I get to Gateshead."

Benjamin will face British rival Robert Tobin in Gateshead, as well as Jamaica's former Commonwealth champion Michael Blackwood.

OSLO, Norway -- Jeremy Wariner has Michael Johnson's 400-meter world record on his mind heading into the opening Golden League meet of the season.

"Definitely," Wariner said when asked if he can break Johnson's time of 43.18, set at the 1999 World Championships in Seville, Spain. "I ran my very first 400 in 44.12 in April, so I know it's possible for me to go 43 this early."

Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, who shares the 100-meter world record of 9.77 with American Justin Gatlin, heads the 100 field.

Wariner, the Olympic and world 400 champion, hopes to dominate the one-lap race like Johnson, the former Olympic champion who is now his agent.

The 22-year-old American knows he can still improve. He'll be racing against two other Americans, Lashawn Merritt and Darold Williamson, in the eight-man field.

"My first 50 meters can get better ... there are little things we have to work on each year," said Wariner, who also will be trying to beat Johnson's Bislett Stadium record of 43.86, set in 1995, in Friday's Bislett Games.

Seven other reigning Olympic champions will compete at Bislett -- Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania (discus), Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia (5,000), Shawn Crawford of the United States (200), Carolina Kluft of Sweden (heptathlon), Dwight Phillips of the United States (long jump), Elena Slesarenko of Russia (high jump) and Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway (javelin).

Kluft will compete in the long jump. She also plans to double in the long jump and heptathlon at the European Championships in Goteborg, Sweden, in August.

Kajsa Bergqvist, another Swedish world champion, heads the high jump field along with Slesarenko.

The Golden League consists of six European meets. The others are in Paris, Rome, Zurich, Brussels and Berlin.

This year, the jackpot is split with $500,000 to be shared among the athletes who win their event in five of the six meets, and the same amount to be shared among the athletes who win their event in all six Golden League meets.
