I chalk it up to jealousy as Duke is a far superior program to UM.

Jalen Rose criticizes Duke in upcoming Fab Five documentary

By Jeff Eisenberg

Almost two decades after they last suited up for a game together in their trademark black socks, black shoes and baggy yellow shorts, Michigan's Fab Five still has the ability to command headlines.

Sunday's debut of ESPN's all-inclusive documentary "The Fab Five" has generated buzz from coast-to-coast, especially after the network aired a clip from the movie on Tuesday featuring some inflammatory comments about Duke.

Reflecting on how they felt before the 1992 national title game against the Blue Devils, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson each said they wanted to beat Duke more than any other opponent.

"For me, Duke was personal. I hated Duke and I hated everything I felt Duke stood for," Rose said in the film. "Schools like Duke didn't recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms."

"The faces of Duke, I didn't like them," King said.

"I hated Duke. I hated Duke," Ray Jackson added.

In an interview with ESPN's "First Take" on Tuesday, Rose clarified that his comments were how he felt as an 18-year-old, but he didn't back off them entirely.

"Certain schools recruit a typical kind of player whether the world admits it or not. And Duke is one of those schools," he said. "They recruit black players from polished families, accomplished families. And that's fine. That's OK. But when you're an inner-city kid playing in a public school league, you know that certain schools aren't going to recruit you. That's one. And I'm OK with it. That's how I felt as an 18-year-old kid."

A phone call to Duke on Wednesday afternoon seeking a response to Rose's criticism was not immediately returned.

The jabs at Duke are just one of the intriguing elements of what's being billed as the most candid and thorough look at the Fab Five that has ever been produced. The 100-minute documentary also touches on everything from the Ed Martin scandal, to Ray Jackson talking about being "the fifth wheel," to the cultural impact of one of college basketball's most famous teams.

Since Rose helped produce the documentary for ESPN, it features nearly every principal and periphery figure in the Fab Five's rise except one: Chris Webber. Rose told the Detroit Free Press that he and his former teammates tried several times to persuade Webber to sit for an interview with no success.

"It was more than one swing at him [participating], it was the whole Detroit Tigers' up-and-down-the-lineup worth of swings," Rose said.

Even without Webber's presence, however, the documentary should be gripping TV.

Rose has hyped the project as the "bible" of the Fab Five. We'll find out Sunday if it lives up to that billing.

This is simply racism, pure and simple. And they can get away with it because of the obvious double standard.

Let's reverse the situation for a moment.

Christian Laettner: "I hated the Fab 5. I hated everything they did and stood for. The long baggy shorts, the black shoes, the black socks, the trash talk, the arrogance, the poor sportsmanship, everything. They stood for all the wrong things in college basketball and I feel that any of that hip-hop/streetball influence they brought into our sport was terrible. I just didn't like anything about those thugs."

Laettner would be crucified and viciously attacked coast-to-coast by every member of the sports media. Rose and his "brothers" are all getting a pass, of course. The documentary, which I did watch, is all about how fabolous they were, and that's no surprise coming from cultural marxism central ESPN.

I agree with Bill Walton who was shown in there saying this was one of the most overrated and overhyped teams ever. I sure am glad they did not win any championships, and both times ended up losing to two teams (Duke and North Carolina) who had a sizable number of white players and non-thug blacks on their rosters.

I just watched this laughable shlockumentary.

I'm not sure there were two truthful statements back to back in the whole show. Additionally, the apologism on display was jaw dropping. The entire program was nothing more than one long excuse for under-performing rule breakers. If you were a basketball fan back then, go ahead and watch it for the guffaws you will surely enjoy. If you're one of the younger members of CF and weren't exposed to the Fraud Five experience twenty years ago, then I recommend you stay far away from this intentionally manipulative brain rot. Instead, I'll tell you everything you need to know.
There was nothing new or unique about that Michigan team. They didn't "break the color barrier" as this stupid show tries really hard to suggest.
They weren't exploited by Nike in any way different from every other college athlete before or since.
They weren't harassed or discriminated against in any way. If anything, they benefitted tremendously from the burgeoning wave of DWFism that was sweeping the country at that time (and has grown into an epidemic).
They weren't the "better team" in either of their championship appearances. They were outmatched in both games.
People like Mitch Albom are the reason that affletes get away with murder and white participants in most sports are discriminated against. He is a villain.

I am old enough to remember the "failed five" the hatred for Duke and the irony of this whole story. Leattner was villified by the media. In an interview on ESPN, I believe it was with Roy Firestone, Leattner shot back at RF saying, "if I were a black player we would not be discussing this," referring to Leattner's trash talking, cursing, and aggressive style of play. He's the closest thing that I've seen at someone calling it what it is, racism. When will someone step up in the mainstream media and call these guys out?

I would like to see someone call Jalen Rose out on his hatred for success! I posted earlier, maybe that's why the"failed five" never won a national championship.

Through the years Duke has produced quite a few talented white NBA players. JJ Redick, Laettner, Dunleavy, McRoberts ,and of course Bobby Hurley who I think would have been a star. All the haters need to just shut up at this point.

Jimmy King is on BSPNs "First Take"... and, boy, is he insanely-jealous of White ballers!!

It's obvious that he wants no "major" program to give White ballers' an opportunity! The "fragile ego" strikes again... but, we already knew this, right..

Yes, and Skip Spineless fails to callhim(J. King)out on his obvious racismand jealously toward Duke and again white ball players! Everyone in the room justs sits there and says nothing to showhow he consistentlycontradicts himself?

Great interview with Bobby Hurley on The Dan Patrick Show. DP saying the failed five are still bitter because of all their failures. Hurley saying "Ican understand J. Rose's frustration, we beat them 3 times to 0, we were better, they saidsome personal things about us, when he(Rose) couldn't take anyone's position on that Duke team, his or T. Hill's.

J. King saying Hurley had no game, when Hurley put 26pts. on him, when they last played each other! Hurley adding, "they can't let it go".

D. Patrick kept saying the "failed five"always called Leattner a name, but wouldn't say what it was. Did anyone catch what that was?

Jalen Rose also admitted on the doc that the better team won (Duke) in the Nat'l championship game and that he had to ultimately respect Laettner's game.

It seems CM is in full front attack mode on White basketball and White athelets in general. Last weekend HBO put on a thug special about the "Running Rebels" and now this POS. I will not view either.

Boby Hurley would have been another Steve Nash, if he was not involved in a horrific traffic collision that almost took his life. After the accident, he was never the same on the court.

Like many of you here, I inexplicably watched some of this unbelievable propaganda. To anyone who doubts how anti-white American culture is at this point, watch this show.

Look at the difference in Bobby Hurley's "opportunites" post-NBA, compared to Jalen Rose. Hurley, at last report, was an assistant coach for his brother Dan at the demonstrably non-basketball powerhouse Wagner College. I'm sure he's raking in the dough there. Meanwhile, the incredibly angry "street kid" Jalen Rose, with little obvious education and mediocre articulation, has become a very well paid talking head on ESPN. That situation in a nutshell exposes the real "racism" in America.

Christian Laettner was treated very poorly in the NBA. Like later day college stars Adam Morrison and Joe Alexander, Laettner was never given the chance to be "the man" for any team. He was vilifed beyond belief by the DWFs, who were already out in full force when he entered the league. Probably because of his attitude, which was more chippy and aggresive than the normal passified white player, he became something of a pariah in the league, like Danny Ainge was. He is still considered by many to be the greatest college player ever, yet he was never given a chance to become a "star," like any comparable black would have. Maybe he couldn't "create his shot" or something.

The underlying premise of this black hatefest, masquerading as a "documentary," is that the "Fab Five" faced enormous racism and obstacles during their college days. Even for dumbed down present day Americans, that is a lot to swallow. College teams with all black starters had won most of the national championships for the past 20 years prior to the introduction of the "Fab Five." If anything, Duke was the real aberration, with their two white star players. They surely encountered more real hatred and threats than the pampered, fake "students" who were christened the "Fab Five," culminating in the vitriol directed at them in this irresponsible show.

I watched it. The first year they were a 6 seed and ETSU upset a higher seed so Michigan could make a run.
Then they lost to Duke in the championship. Duke won it's second in a row with two all-time great college players with Laettner and Hurley along with Grant Hill (NBA all star). Michigan wasn't the better team that year.

The next year they were a high seed and went to the Final Four along with North Carolina, Kansas, and Kentucky.
If I am not mistaken all those four teams were basically in the top five all year with North Carolina and Kansas being number one for most of the year. I think UNC finished the regular season ranked number one with Kansas at 2 maybe. Even without Laettner Duke had a good team but they were upset by Cal (Jason Kidd, Lamond Murray) in the second round. Maybe Duke could have beat them that year. But, UNC had the better team, and Kansas had a very good team too. Michigan was by no means a favorite that year to cut down the nets.

Among teams that failed to win the title, UNLV which was beaten by Duke in 1991 was probably better than the Fab Five. That team won it all the previous year and went into the Duke game undefeated.
Another great team that didn't win was the Phi Slamma Jamma team with Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler -- two hall of famers along with some other good athletic players. The 2008 Memphis Tigers won a record 38 games and had current MVP candidate Derrick Rose along with Chris Douglas Roberts and Joey Dorsey. That Memphis team beat UCLA who had Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Darren Collison, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. Those were two other loaded teams.

The Fab Five included one NBA all-star, a very solid pro in Juwan Howard, another good pro in Jalen Rose, along with two flameouts in Jimmy King who played about two years in the NBA and Ray Jackson who I don't think played in the league. So it wasn't the Fab Five. More like Two and a Half Men.
Other than Webber it wasn't that great. Ok, they lost two straight championships. Well, Christian Laettner lost in the title game then won Back To Back championships.

I remember the year after UNC beat Michigan their freshman class included Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace. Not a bad class there...

If I'm right, didn't UNC have a few white players that got time when they beat the "Fab Five" in the 1993 Title Game?

Yes, JL there were several white contributors and some were starters on that "93" UNC Championship Team. Among them were starters, Eric Montross, Pat Sullivan and reserves, but played alot of minutes, were Germany's Henrik Rodl, and Kevin Salvadori.

I tuned in briefly to ESPN's "First Take" this morning, just long enough to catch more of Jalen Rose (and his fellow "Fab Five" cohort) and his unapologetic racism. Even more illuminating was Skip Bayless' limp wristed subservience to these two clowns.

Bayless exemplifies the enormity of the problem we face. Here we had two less than brilliant, arrogant black males flinging outrageous accusations against Duke University, and this older white male acts like Steppin' Fetchit used to, bowing and apologizing for the perpetual imaginary sins of his race.

The idea that "journalists" can look at a sport that is overwhelmingly black, especially at the biggest colleges, and still try to figure out a way that the people running that sport are actually discriminating against black players, is mind boggling. Virtually all black starters at these "top" schools is evidently not enough "progess."

We all know the kind of expose a real journalist would do about the issue of colleges refusing to recruit certain kinds of players. Hint- it isn't black players they don't want.

Yeah bigunreal, if that loser Bayless had any journolistic integrity he could have simply offered up Georgetown University as a prestigeous Catholic School that demands high standards for its students(nearly all white), but naturally alot less than its all affeletic teams for the past 25 years.

Furthermore, its affelets were the thug type. Where all of the Georgetown playas "Uncle Toms?" Of course not! BSPN except for its excellent writer Dan Raphael in the Boxing is absolutely crap. This bit clearly demonstrates the beating down of Whites and its athelets.

Can you imagine the firestorm if Laenttner stated, " I chose Duke because it demands excellence in atheletics and academics, I hate schools like Mich., they recruit inner city players with hoodies/hip hop players, not for me." Yeah, then we are subjected to programs hosted by a female skank and coward/member? like Bayless placate two dumb affelets. Disgusting.

The "white racism"Â￾ assertion has become a standard fixture of ESPN's "30-for-30"Â￾ racial inoculation documentary series. In particular, the episodes concerning Jimmy the Greek, The University of Miami football team, Allen Iverson's high school legal troubles, South African Rugby, and OJ Simpson"¦and those are merely the episodes I've had the misfortune of watching.

I haven't seen the "F-g Five"Â￾ as of yet, however, I doubt the "structure"Â￾ of the "Thug-U-Mentary"Â￾ deviates from those I've seen. You know the drill"¦black athletes superciliously bragging, protesting unsubstantiated racial victimization, and pretending to be "angry militant black men"Â￾"¦coupled with the standard assortment of white peons (sportswriters, friends, former opponents, etc) spewing a noxious concoction of guilt, self-abhoration and Afrocentric awe.

I will undoubtedly contend, however, that absolutely no amount of anti-white absurdity found in "30-for30"Â￾ could come close to rivaling that found in the PBS-based "Unforgivable Blackness,"Â￾ concerning the life and times of "legendary"Â￾ pimp / boxer, Jack Johnson.Edited by: Thrashen

Jalen Rose clearly hates Duke and there might be some racism involved with his hatred. If you look at the "Uncle Tom" comments, Rose probably sees well-mannered, hard-working, humble, respectful, polite Black People as "uncle Toms". If that is the case, the majority of the Blacks who play for Duke probably are "Uncle Toms" and there is nothing wrong with that. Would you rather cheer on a bunch of Black Thugs or Uncle Toms?

EDIT: Jalen Rose hated Duke, and I have no problem with that. Is it not natural to hate your arch enemy and to find personal things about them to hate? I have no problems with Rose's honesty. White athletes should look to Rose's outspokenness on racial issues in recruiting and get motivated to have the nerve point out that White athletes aren't recruited nearly as much as they should be by many schools. It is perfectly natural for people who feel "screwed" by society, like Rose, to feel jealousy or hatred towards people like Grant Hill who was raised wealthy and was given every privilege in society.

There is no way a majority white team like Duke, with an emphasis on character and academics, would function if 40% of the roster was made of "ghetto" black athletes. The locker room divide would be greater than the Berlin Wall. Looking at the black athletes who have gone through the Duke basketball program, Nolan Smith, Seth Curry, Grant Hill, they do not stand out at all from the rest of their white teammates in terms of personality or demeanor. They behave like their white teammates. Many "black" Duke players are in fact bi-racial, to boot.

Elton Brand only stayed at Duke for one year and didn't seem to fit the mold. Coach K wants to recruit athletes who will stay for the full 4 years which most white athletes and "uncle Toms" are willing to do, unlike the Ghetto Black Youth who would rather be shot dead than be caught "acting white". Yes, staying in school for 4 years would be considered "acting white" by many blacks and Coach K is wise to steer as far from this "hood" mentality as possible.

Rose's comments are probably based on some level of truth but what he doesn't see is that it boils down to character, not racism. But obviously if they are looking for high character athletes, inner city ghettos are not the first place Coach K will look to recruit. Edited by: TorontoArgos

Duke heavily recruited Chris Webber but he chose Michigan, which makes Rose even more ignorant...

I watched this joke of a "documentary." I'm the same ages as most of the players and followed CB back then (Duke fan) and I don't recall ANY of this cultural transformation of the "fab 5" they were just an overrated team that got exposed in the finals TWICE, nothing more!

To every black person you talk to it will always be 1950 something with the KKK calling all of the shots and blacks facing unrelenting discrimination. Same with the jews and the never ending predjudice they face or the non ending saga of the holocaust. Even after whites have volantarily self terminated themselves as a race from the planet all of the left over browns and yellows will still be arguing over who has it worse as a legacy left over from white people.
