This is a local school somewhat near to where I live that has cancelled their season due to low participation numbers and injuries. They are 0-4 and have been outscored 191-12. They haven't scored a point since week 1. The article did mention that high school athletes can transfer now which means all the best players are starting to concentrate on just a handful of teams. I can't imagine this is healthy in the long term for the local high school football scene. Does this happen in places where you guys live?

This has happened for decades in my city for various reasons. Some of it is because of equipment costs but much of it is due to gentrification and a more recent generation being softer than previous generations.

I don't know whether this "sissifying" of young males is because of female leadership but it is quite noticeable to me whenever school age children socialize as when I was in this range there was always a sandlot football game happening with full tackling and hard blocking and male teachers turned a blind eye to it.

Fist fights happened frequently and male teachers turned a blind eye to that too unless it was too violent or a gang type fight with multiple people fighting.

Even street hockey is near dead by me and that was played every day on the streets or at the elementary school or junior high and now these are rarities as far as I can tell.

I don't understand the philosophy of going to the strongest team. When you win it all with little effort, what have you gained? Nothing worth being satisfied for what you should have done all along. No challenge there. It reminds me of those years where Deion Sanders kept moving to the team he thought would win the next Superbowl. 49ers to Cowboys to Redskins. Cake and eat it, too. No need to try hard.

When I was in elementary school we played "smear the queer" and it was essentially 10 boys running around and whoever had the balls to pick up the ball got gang tackled. I don't ever remember a teacher stopping us. It hurt to be at the bottom of the pile but it was just part of being a kid and it was fun. It also taught us at a young age to not shy away from contact and to avoid tackles.

As for high school players going to the best teams, I thought the same thing Haywood. Why would kids want to transfer schools away from all their friends? I'm guessing it comes down to being seen by scouts and maybe scouts are more likely to be watching the best teams.

Here's another school near me that was on the fence and just decided to cancel the remainder of their season today. I guess in this case the team was down to just 15 players in pads. Not a good position to be in for a team so I guess I can understand the coach pulling the plug. Maybe what they should do is put these non competitive teams in a division of their own just for the remainder of the season so they can get some reps and not get blown out.

Some people would rather be a small fish in a big pond than a big fish in a small pond.

Realistically, the small fish in a big pond strategy rarely works out.

I have never heard of that one but it reminds me of the football played in this movie...

I do recall a few guys I vaguely knew who went to a district power house who routinely played in the Toronto area equivalent of the college playoffs in a 8 team format where the teams played in the Sky Dome and students could take the afternoon off to watch the game(I didn't).

This slowly happened at my high school where we went from junior varsity and senior varsity with cuts to only senior with no cuts because there were barely enough guys who wanted to play varsity football.

My school used to produce CFL players and in my cycle 3 NHL prospects went to it and none played and one even had a long productive career in the NHL.

I remember when my old school dropped the team and nobody stepped up to save the team but around the same time the team died local parents/ home owners raised funds to save the pool which was shut down due to budgetary cuts.
