The golf section has gone a little bit quite and instead of starting a new thread for each tournament I thought it might be a good idea to start one for each tour to discuss.
Martin Kaymer moves up to 2nd in the world after his eight shot victory in Abu Dhabi. He's a great player and comes across as a very nice, humble man. A good role model.ÂÂÂ
Kaymer Romps in Abu Dhabi
Martin Kaymer closed with a 6-under 66 to successfully defend his title in the European Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. With the eight-shot victory, the rising German star supplanted Tiger Woods in the No. 2 position in the World Golf Rankings.
Kaymer, the reigning PGA champion, finished 72 holes at Abu Dhabi Golf Club in 24-under 264, smashing the course record of 267 set by Paul Casey posted in 2009 and matched by Kaymer last year.ÂÂÂ
It was his third win in the tournament in four years and eighth victory in his last 18 starts.
"It was just one of those weeks when everything goes my way," said the 26-year-old. "It's just the perfect course for me. It was more difficult, but I hit a lot of fairways and my putting was amazing."
The win was Kaymer's ninth on the European Tour. In moving right behind No. 1-ranked Lee Westwood of England, Europe has claimed the top two spots in the world rankings for the first time since July 1993, when Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer led them.
"I think for Lee (Westwood) and me, it's a very nice position to be No. 1 and 2 in the world," Kaymer said. "You can see how strong European golf became the last few years, and not only through the Ryder Cup, but if you have a look at the major winners last year." (Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell won the U.S. Open and South African Louis Oosthuizen the British Open.)
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy closed with a 3-under 69 to take second place at 16-under 272. McDowell had a 5-under 67 to join two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen, who posted the best round of the day, an 8-under 64, in third at 274.
McIlroy knew pretty soon in the final round it wasn't going to be possible to catch Kaymer, who carded 25 birdies and one bogey in the tournament.
"I happy with the week," McIlroy said. "If anything, I could have put a little pressure on Martin early on, but when he goes out and shoots 66, there is not much you can do about that. After the bogey on the fifth hole, I was just trying to consolidate second place."
Masters champion Phil Mickelson shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday to finish tied for 37th at 5-under.
