Im a huge Denis Boytsov fan, and I dont mind Darnell Wilson as being his scheduled opponent, to be honest I think its a decent matchup all things considered. Just my own opinion.
Denis did not look impressive in his last outing (TKO 6 Matthew Greer), and he has been largely inactive, fighting very infrequently for the last 2 years (in fact, this will only be his 4th fight in over 2 years). Boytsov's career hit a high-note in 2009 with successive impressive TKOs over Garcia, Bidenko, and Gavern. Since then inactivity has taken its toll and Denis looks rusty. Right now, I think Denis needs a fight to gain him back his confidence.
Darnell Wilson is a very tough, durable guy, and has a good punch. Wilson is getting older and close to the twilight of his career, but he is a "name" opponent and former world champion. Nevertheless, I see this as a good step-stone fight for Denis.
Ultimately, I find myself in large agreement with dempseyfire in that after this fight, Boytsov certainly needs to step up his level of opposition.
Providing he beats Wilson convincingly, Id love to see Boytsov fight one of the following opponents next:
Manuel Charr, 20-0 (11)
Ray Austin, 28-6-4 (18)
Bowie Tupou, 26-1 (16)
Johnathon Banks, 27-1-1 (18)
Oliver McCall, 56-11 (37)
Lets also keep in mind that Denis Boytsov is only 25 years old. Ive also read that his amateur career was rushed, in the sense that he turned pro early and thus gave up a large portion of his amateur career. So, Denis will have a larger learning curve than most.
Nothing wrong with building up slowly, and at 25 years old, Denis Boytsov certainly has a good 5 years to build himself up to a titleshot!
