Russian boxer in coma after incident in Berlin subway

BERLIN (AP) — Russian heavyweight boxer Denis Boytsov has been placed in an artificial coma after being found with serious head injuries in a Berlin subway tunnel.
Boytsov, who has a 36-1 record, was found lying in the tunnel between two subway stations in the upmarket Charlottenburg district of western Berlin on May 3.

The 29-year-old fighter was placed in a medically induced coma because of swelling on the brain, a statement on Boytsov's website said Tuesday.
It was not until late Monday that Boytsov was publicly identified as the man injured in the incident. Although born in Russia, he has been based in Germany for more than a decade.
Berlin police said Tuesday that the case was still under investigation but that, based on witness interviews and video footage, the incident appears to have been an accident.
Police, who did not refer to Boytsov by name due to German privacy laws, said the man remains hospitalized but they had no details on his condition.
The statement on Boytsov's website suggested he had been the victim of an attack linked to his boxing career.

"It is possible that this attack was linked to the boxer's sporting activity," the statement said. "Around two years ago, Boytsov was receiving threats constantly."

There was no word on who had issued the alleged threats or why.
Boytsov last fought in March, when he beat Brazilian fighter Irineu Beato Costa Jr.
In 2013, he was the WBO's mandatory challenger to world champion Wladimir Klitschko, but lost that status after a defeat to Australia's Alex Leapai. Before turning professional, Boytsov was a world junior champion as an amateur.

It's what I was thinking, that maybe boxing gangsters forced him into the subway tunnel and beat him there.

At this point no boxing commission will ever let him fight again. So this is a fight to live and come out of a coma whole. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

He had beef with SMS Promotions, after he left them. They treatened to put him into a wheelchair, his wife said. Boytsovs manager, Gagik Chatschatryan has been attacked aswell on April 11, 2013. Now it seems like they've got Boytsov. He watched May vs Pac, and went into the subway at 11 AM, surveillance cameras show.

He was found at 4:30 PM. They found alcohol & another substance, most likely some tranquilizer, in his body. There are some reliable sources, that he wanted to escape from someone, and he went into the subway tunnel. He was found there, with head injuries, and a destroyed hand, which most likely ends his career, if he ever recovers. And no, he wasn't an idiot. Sure, he was drinking too much, sometimes, but we all do, aren't we? I know people who know him, and all of them are saying he's been a nice, honest, humble guy.

I hope he survives this, without serious injuries, and everything resolves. This was no accident, the police is sure, and his family is sure.

Isn't SMS Promotions an all negro criminal outfit in New York City? What did Boytsov have to do with that?

Boytsov is a big dude and he's very strong. I can't imagine 1 man managing to intimidate him or beat him. Must have been a group of guys.

PS) The German Turkish boxing promoter Ahmet Oner was shot a few years ago but survived and he claimed it was boxing underworld figures trying to kill him. No question the German boxing scene is dirty. Maybe it's the same people responsible? I don't believe the case was ever solved.

There was also a German Arab female fighter can't remember her name who was shot by her manager and had to retire. This happened like 5 years ago.

Now they're saying it happened on May 3rd. So he has been in a coma for over a week now. Not good.

Contradictory reports in the news story so far - police saying no sign of assault and it appears to have been an accident; his wife saying police told her it appears to have been an assault; one place it says serious hand injury, another, no serious hand injury. Possibly he was just drunk and fell off the subway platform.

One of the cornermen in the Moscow show last night was wearing a shirt that said "PRAY FOR BOYTSOV" on it.

This is the latest news I can find from a few days ago: "He is awake and can breath on his own. But he does not move very much, cant talk and reacts only with small moves by his hands, when someone is talking to him."
