By the way, Hirschfeld’s ideas on race were equally toxic. In 1938, his book called Racism was published. His ideas on race sound awfully familiar to the crap taught at university now:
He added that, in the 19th century, an ideology which divided all of humanity into biologically different races — white, black, yellow, brown and red — as devised by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach served as a way of turning prejudices into a "universal truth", apparently validated by science. In turn, Hirschfeld held the view that this pseudo-scientific way of dividing humanity was the basis of Western thinking about modernity, with whites being praised as the "civilized" race in contrast to the other races, which were dismissed for their "barbarism"; such thinking was used to justify white supremacy.
