Could he be another Mickey Mantle? It's way too early but this kid can sure play. I just hope the pressure of being a superstar from day one is not too much for the kid. I'm still not crazy about him going to the Nationals but I guess I will have to root for them now. Good luck Bryce!

Yet another white athlete that is paying/will pay dividends for Washington. Too long were they clogged up with black and Latino underachievers that were sinking the team. With Strasburg, Zimmerman, Espinosa, and Zimmermann (pitcher) the Nats have a young White core of players to build a successful franchise around. My guess is that they'll be getting progressively better in the years to come.

With spring training baseball starting over the weekend, I got around to reading Baseball America's top 100 prospect list for 2011. To my pleasant surprise, Bryce Harper was #1. For those not familiar, Baseball America is probably the premier scouting service for MLB prospects. The previous #1 prospects have been Jason Heyward, Matt Weiters, Jay Bruce, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Delmon Young, and Joe Mauer (2x). Big congrats to the 18 year old Harper!

Since this list may be a glimpse into the near future, I thought it would be informative to break down the demographics.

1-20: 14 Whites
smiley32.gif
(5 of whom are on the Royals!), 5 Hispanics (1 of whom is born is the US) and only 1 African-American. Some notable guys other than Harper are Mike Trout (#2), Jeremy Hellickson (#6) and Eric Hosmer (#8)

21-40: 13 Whites
smiley20.gif
, 3 Hispanics, 3 African-Americans and 1 mulatto

41-60: 8 Whites (1 of whom is Cuban born), 10 Hispanics (2 of whom are born in the US) and 2 African-Americans.
smiley11.gif

61-80: 18 Whites (1 of whom is Cuban born), 2 Hispanics and 0 African-Americans.
smiley32.gif

81-100: 14 Whites
smiley20.gif
, 4 Hispanics, 1 African American and 1 Korean.

So that puts the overall totals at 67 Whites, 24 Hispanics, 7 African-Americans, 1 mulatto and 1 Korean.

This is a good sign that despite the attempts to darken the league with Caribbean ballplayers, Whites are holding their ground and producing great talents. At only 7% of the list, I guess black Americans are losing interest in the game.
smiley36.gif
I'd also like to add that many of the Hispanics listed are young and ranked more on hype than a minor league track record. I'd bet a good few of them will fizzle out.

Good stuff and very encouraging as White prospects in all sportstend to be under-rated. Just don't let Joe Morgan see it, the little guy may have a stroke.

Bryce is already the target of DWFs, being harrassed by"home" fans at meaningless spring training games. Can DWFs be any more embarrassing? Black worshipping, self-loathingjealous losers with no life heckling a young White man with a great future ahead of him.

Bryce Harper loves hecklers

Harper makes Hecklers STFU with his bat

Bryce Harper got heckled on Monday (at home in Viera, no less!). And then Bryce Harper got revenge.MLB.com's Bill Ladson explains:

With Harper at the plate, one fan in the stands yelled, "Overrated, overrated." On the next pitch from reliever Jorge De Leon, Harper doubled near the right-field line, scoring Matt Stairs and Alex Cora.

"You can hear everything out there," Harper said. "You can't really get into that. I've been hearing it since I was in high school, college. It doesn't get old because I love it. I love hearing it. I love people saying that stuff about me. I like all the bad stuff."
(via Bill Ladson/MLB.com, 3/7/2011)

One heckler? Or more than one heckler? Here's the Associated Press account:

Nationals highly touted prospect Bryce Harper had the perfect answer after hearing fans chant "overrated" after he took a called strike in the eighth inning against the Houston Astros on Monday.
(via AP, 3/7/2011)

Fans, plural. Ata home game for the Nats? Who were those a-holes? Regardless, at the very least it'll be good practice for the kid for futurehome games against the Phillies. And if a few idiots helped produce a2-run double (Harper's second double of the inning), justimagine the first time Bryce Harper takes the field at Citizen's Bank Park in Philly in front of 40,000+ potty-mouthed Philadelphians.

Pretty good haul for Harper there ina nine-runeighth: 2-2, two doubles, two RBI,two runs scored. Won't be long now before the Nats reassign him to minor league camp, right?

Good stuff, but interesting. I could be wrong , but did ESPN cover this performance the way they did his0 for 2 opening the other day. Seems the media was loving it when he failed in his first 2 at bats. Haven't heard anything else until now. Thanks.

I love the attitude that Bryce has in regards to the hecklers. He has the potential to be a great player.

Harper is playing for Class A Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League. He's currently second in the league in both HRs (13) and RBIs (41), to go along with a .346 batting average.

As I have written over the years, I go back a long way. A white superstar being viciously booed and heckled by white fans happened long before the reign of cultural marxism. I remember watching the New York Yankees on TV in 1959-60. When Mickey Mantle came to the plate in Yankee Stadium, he received the worst booing and jeers I have ever heard for a baseball player.

It mostly stopped for Mantle in 1961, as fans preferred Mantle to Roger Maris. The booing of Mantle stated during the Korean War when his leg problems (which were legitimate) made him 4-F. It was worse than ever in 1960, as I well recall.

I knew a man who was the late Red Sox star Tony Conigliaro's agent. Around 1966, the Red Sox fans were giving it to Tony C. Ed (his name) called Mickey Mantle on the phone one day when the Yankees were in Boston and asked Mantle for advice. Mantle told him to tell Conigliaro, "Keep your mouth shut. The only way to get the fans off your back and back on your side is to start hitting."

As far as I know, till his death, Mickey Mantle never complained about being booed for a decade. I don't have to tell you many black athletes whine incessantly about a single boo.

Yes, jealous losers with no life. They may be worse these days, but the DWFs have been around for 50-60 years.

Haven't you heard.. Bryce Harper is apparently a punk!

Never mind the extreme surlyness of Barry Bonds, Frank Thomas.. or how David Ortiz, Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard (etc) never miss an opportunity to "show up" a pitcher.

BSPN is attacking Harper, again. He shouldn't have done the mocking action he did (blowing a kiss toward the pitcher while rounding third base after homering) but there apparently was a lot that led up to it, including Harper being plunked by a pitch the previous game. He has to learn that there's a bullseye on his back as far as the media and many DWFs are concerned, being a White "prodigy" during an era when only blacks are supposed to be heralded that way.

Immaturity could hold Bryce Harper back

I caught that yesterday on Sportscenter. I guess it ranks right up there with choking your coach(Latrell Sprewell), suckering punching an opponent(Kermit Washington), and killing dozens of innocent animals(Michael Vick).

I really hope Bryce starts in the majors this year. Whites rarely make it to the majors before their mid 20s. The biggest factor IMO, is that whites are much more likely to go through college before heading to the minor leagues. By the time they get to the minors, they're already 22 years old.

Non-whites are much less likely to go through college , so they have a shot to start their major league careers at 20, 21 or younger.

The younger a player is when they make the majors, the more likely they are to amass huge career numbers. So a Hispanic or black could have nearly 1000 hits or 100 home runs by the time he's 25, when a lot of white players are just starting their careers.

Long story short is I hope Bryce gets up there soon so he can have a real shot at breaking some records if he is fortunate enough to stay healthy through his career.

Harper is on a very short leash, as far as the way he conducts himself. He's already been blasted by the media as immature and arrogant. He was booed by his own team's DWFs last spring training when he made outs. American Whites tend to be extremely jealous of Whites who succeed, especially ones like Harper who are touted as phenoms while still a teenager, and like nothing more than to tear them down. Bryce needs to be impeccable on and off the field or else the media and DWFs will hate him with a passion, and they probably will anyway no matter what he does.

I am hoping Harper does start the season at the pro level. I think he has all the tools to be a great player. He does have some immaturity issues but at 19 years old that is to be expected. As others have stated it is very rare a white player gets to break into the major league until they are in their early-mid 20s which really hurts their shot at being able to put up huge numbers.

Mike Trout is another player to keep an eye out for...he is 20 years old...had some decent success after being called up last year for anaheim but will start at triple a this year.

As Don pointed out regarding Peyton Hillis, Harper probably doesn't have advisers who would explain to him the situation he is really in regarding fans and media.

Weenieworld welcomes Harper's imminent call-up to the bigs:

Bryce Harper is slated to play left field upon his call up from Triple-A Syracuse. With Michael Morse (lat) on the mend, Nationals' left fielders have combined to bat a major-league worst .097 (7-for-72) this season, so Harper can't do much worse. He has primarily played center field this year with Triple-A Syracuse, but he made 37 starts in left last year with Double-A Harrisburg. Harper could go back down to the minors as soon as Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) is eligible to return from the disabled list on May 6, but he's worth an add in all formats on potential alone.

Bryce Harper up and another potential star in Mike Trout is back with the Angels. The Angels got rid of tubby affletito Abreu to make room for the majors' #1 prospect.

Good luck to both of them.

Harper is getting a lot of media coverage in a good way, not the over-the-top circus that is obsessed with Tim Tebow. Would be great to see him stay with Washington (as the "common wisdom" is that he'll be sent down to the minors at some point this season) and become the NL Rookie of the Year at age 19.

There is nothing on the baseball field that this kid couldn't do. What an amazing arm. He is so athletic and his hand eye coordination like most whites is off the charts. Let the chase begin for 600 to 700 homeruns if he takes care of his body. He is so much more than just a homerun hitter though. The guy is a stud! Complete all around baseball player and a superstar that can live up to the hype for a change. One last thing to remember. The media has even compared him to Ken Griffey. How often does any white player in any sport get compared to a black hall of famer? This kid is for real.

It's great that the Nationals moved Harper to the outfield from catcher. It'll extend his career significantly.
