With spring training baseball starting over the weekend, I got around to reading Baseball America's top 100 prospect list for 2011. To my pleasant surprise, Bryce Harper was #1. For those not familiar, Baseball America is probably the premier scouting service for MLB prospects. The previous #1 prospects have been Jason Heyward, Matt Weiters, Jay Bruce, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Delmon Young, and Joe Mauer (2x). Big congrats to the 18 year old Harper!
Since this list may be a glimpse into the near future, I thought it would be informative to break down the demographics.
1-20: 14 Whites
(5 of whom are on the Royals!), 5 Hispanics (1 of whom is born is the US) and only 1 African-American. Some notable guys other than Harper are Mike Trout (#2), Jeremy Hellickson (#6) and Eric Hosmer (#8)
21-40: 13 Whites
, 3 Hispanics, 3 African-Americans and 1 mulatto
41-60: 8 Whites (1 of whom is Cuban born), 10 Hispanics (2 of whom are born in the US) and 2 African-Americans.
61-80: 18 Whites (1 of whom is Cuban born), 2 Hispanics and 0 African-Americans.
81-100: 14 Whites
, 4 Hispanics, 1 African American and 1 Korean.
So that puts the overall totals at 67 Whites, 24 Hispanics, 7 African-Americans, 1 mulatto and 1 Korean.
This is a good sign that despite the attempts to darken the league with Caribbean ballplayers, Whites are holding their ground and producing great talents. At only 7% of the list, I guess black Americans are losing interest in the game.
I'd also like to add that many of the Hispanics listed are young and ranked more on hype than a minor league track record. I'd bet a good few of them will fizzle out.
