Brian Leonard 23

from rotoworld.com:

"Brian Leonard will be the Rams' starting running back while Steven Jackson recovers from a partial tear of his groin.

Special teamer Travis Minor will likely help on some third downs and Antonio Pittman will be active. Leonard will get all the goal-line carries, and is also a solid receiver, so 20+ touches per week is a safe estimate. He'll get favorable matchups against Dallas in Week 4 and Arizona in Week 5."

it has been a long time since we've had a white 100 yard rusher, it's only fitting that Brian now will have a shot at that mark!

last white 100 yard rushers:

10.24.2004 Brad Hoover, Panthers vs Chargers: 99 yards (i know!), 4.1 ypc

11.30.2003 Brock Forsey, Bears vs Cardinals: 134 yards, 5.0 ypc, 1 TD

10.30.2002 Mike Alstott, Bucs at Browns: 127 yards, 7.5 ypc, 2 TDs (Alstott also had 2 games over a 100 yards in 2001, week 7 vs Vikings: 129 yards, 4.6 ypc, 3 TDs adn in week 15 vs Saints: 101 yards, 4.2 ypc, 1 TD)

11.27.2000 Brad Hoover, Panthers vs Packers, 117, 4.9 ypc, 1 TD

Alstott had 4 more games with over 100 rushing yards in 1998 and 1999 with a career high 131 yards vs Broncos in week 3 of 1999 NFL season. he finished the season with a career high 949 yards and 3.9 ypc.

Well, you just never know!

but yeah, Jackson can be out for over 2 weeks. should give Leonard time to get himself noticed. too bad about Rams o-line in shackles.

Will Incognito be back this week?

he might be. Setterstrom is out for a year though... now, if Leonard can run behind this o-line, we know he's a real deal...

from rams.com

SETTERSTROM OUT: The worst fears of everyone when guard Mark Setterstrom was carted off the field in Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay were confirmed Monday morning when Setterstrom's official diagnosis was a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Setterstrom is out for the season and will be placed on injured reserve in the coming days.

"The good news is it is one of those injuries that will be reparable for a young guy and he should be able to bounce back from this for next season," Linehan said. "Unfortunately for him it was a season ending injury. We'll be looking at some replacement possibilities in the next 24-48 hours."

Replacements for Setterstrom are limited, but it's probably the Rams will look to find someone who could be ready to play sooner than later. Center Andy McCollum has worked at guard in the past, but is mainly a center and hasn't played guard in some time.

"He's an option," Linehan said. "He's been a great center in this league for years. Center is his position, but because of his ability and what he knows, he is definitely an option."

One intriguing option could be a return for guard Adam Timmerman. Timmerman was released in the offseason after a long tenure in St. Louis as a workhorse on the interior of the line. Timmerman has been in St. Louis working out, but the level of interest in him is unclear.

As for starting in Setterstrom's place, the line deployment will depend on the health of Richie Incognito. Incognito is recovering from a sprained ankle and could return this week against Dallas.

If Incognito returns the Rams will likely use Claude Terrell at left guard with Milford Brown working as the swing man at tackle and guard. If Incognito can't go, the Rams will almost certainly use Brown at right guard with Terrell on the left side and McCollum as a swing man and Brandon Gorin at right tackle.

Brian Leonard will run the ball with wreckless abandon he I feel has a chip on his shoulder and is out to prove the naysayers wrong. Brian I wish you the best give them hell and play like your future is on the line and you will shine like the player we all know you can be. I for one will be watching Leonard tote the rock, and I encourage everyone who visits this site to make plans to watch him we must support our own.

this is a great opportunity for Brian, and i hope he lights up the Cowboys defense!

however, the fantasy football negrophiles already bashed Brian in that article's sidebar...
However, the rookie out of Rutgers is no better than a No. 3 or 4 fantasy back or flex starter and is not close in value to Jackson overall.

here is to hoping that Brian Leonard will be making many people eat more crow.

Tonight I saw another example how ordinary people see a white guy at a caste position, they automatically assume he's bad! Tonight I was at a function and saw a fellow college kid wearing a rams jersey, even though I knew it wasn't I asked if it was a Leonard jersey. And he said "No, it's Jackson. Leonard is terrible." I was astounded and said what are you talking about, he said "he got benched his senior year." I told him that Leonard still had a great year even though is carries got cut, set Rutgers rushing records, and is sometimes credited with reviving the program. This guy said he was mad when the Rams picked Leonard in the 2nd round, so I mentioned that he had the 5th fastest 40 time of all running backs, and that he is going to be a star. This guy finally seemed receptive after I got the chance to explain, but how many others are out there who falsely assume that white=bad running back?

You should have also mentioned that Leonard is faster than Kenny Irons who was drafted ahead of him. Believe it or not Leonard is faster than more than half of NFL starting HBs. You are right Electric Slide people automatically assume whites are bad at caste positions.

Today I was talking with a friend of a friend who is an Eagles fan about the game Curtis and McNabb had. I mentioned expect more good things from Curtis this year, and this is coming from a Giant Fan. He replied "Curtis may end up being a one game wonder." I asked "Why? Curtis may be one of the fastest 10 WRs in the league. The guy immediately said "Yeah right, I'll name a whole bunch off the top of my head who are faster." Two of the names he mentioned are definitely slower than Curtis. He named Keshawn Johnson and Chad Johnson. I said "You're wrong Curtis was hand timed in college at 4.21 and ran a 4.42 at the NFL Combine. Chad Johnson runs no faster than a 4.5 and Keshawn runs a 4.6. Jerry Rice and Issac Bruce also run 4.6s, but I'm assuming you think they are faster than Curtis also." Then he said "Wow I didn't know Curtis was that fast!"

Everything a good back like leonard need is an opportunity, now he's got it. He's the type of guy that makes the most ot of those. I'll watch the rams game. God bless NFL sunday tickets!

I predict the Rams talk Tiki Barber out of retirement to fill in for Jackson as the number one back.

Or maybe OJ if he makes bail.

Leonard should wear that self-tanner stuff they sell in stores now. It will turn his skin really dark.

A possible side effect though it might make him look like he's wearing make up.

it will be Bulger, Bennett, Leonard, Richard Owens and Klopfenstein in at some plays... plus 2 or 3 white guys on the o-line.

Poor Brian Leonard, he is going to have to play out of his skull for him to get any love at all. It took Reggie Bush what about 6 games before he ever got a touchdown last season and pretty much really didn't start contributing to the Saints offense until about week 10 or so. Leonard won't get that luxury. He will either rush for a buck 50 with about two scores or they will use every chance to say "See! We told you this kid couldn't play" much like the Bears did with poor Brock Forsey.

This is his big shot and hopefully the nerves won't get to him. He has to be superman.

Forsey ran for 134 yards and still got benched and basically was told he looked like a waterboy. Leonard could probably run for 200 yards and people would barely notice. Even Brad Hoover has went for 100 yards twice only to go back to blocking for the running backs with the hip swivel.

I hope Brian shines because he will be heavily criticized. Of all teams for him to face. He has to go against the red hot undefeated Cowboys. I hope he lights them up and then says...How bout the Cowgirls?

I am worried about Leonard behind an o-line with so many injuries. Setterstrom and Pace are out. Even Steven Jackson's production had dropped off this year and that was when the Rams still had Setterstrom. If Leonard puts up 4 yards per carry in his first game as a starter then he is superman behind this o-line. Still the drunken fans will only see it as average! He needs to get close to the 100 yard mark, go for 4YPC and get a rushing TD for the stupid fans to not disparage him. GO BRIAN!

Gentlemen,

Check out my post of 08/24/07.

A guy like Leonard is hard to stop. There is always something that will happen, like Jackson getting hurt that will get a guy like Leonard into the mix. Always happens that way.

Tom Iron...

Brian Leonard got a chance to shine to prove everybody wrong, so in the next draft guys like Hester is gonna have a chance or even Peyton Hillis..

yes but Jervey got a chance and performed well and was kicked out of the league for a lack of melanin. Let's just hope Leonard can have a good game.

Well, Jervey was picked at the fifth round, the fact that Leonard was drafted at the second, is really helping his case..

Brian will be the first white true RB/HB/TB to start an NFL game since Brock Forsey in 2003. Heath Evans was the main runner for a couple of games in 2005, but as a FB.
