Very good comeback win for Andy Lee.

He dominated much of the fight, and then knocked Gibbs down in the 10th. Gibbs slowly got back up, but appeared dazed and unsteady on his feet. After a couple more punches from Lee, the corner of Gibbs threw in the towel.

Lee looked very solid against a guy who wasn't there for a payday. The only negative thing I saw in the fight is a thing that could be a problem throughout his career. He looks like he is a bleeder in the mold of Jerry Quarry. I wonder if this will haunt him against world championship level fighter.

WBA #13 middleweight Andy Lee (20-1, 14 KOs) scored a ten round decision over reigning European Union and French champion Affif Belghecham (19-4-1, 4 KOs) on Saturday night before his hometown fans at the University Sports Arena in Limerick, Ireland. The much taller Lee clinically outboxed Belghecham from the outside, refraining from engaging in exchanges for the first eight rounds. Belghecham, however, stormed back and dominated the last two rounds with Lee barely hanging on at the end. The referee was the sole scorer for the bout and he had it 99-92 for Lee.

I see also on that undercard: Undefeated junior middleweight Anton "The Pick Hammer"Â￾ Novikov 17-0, 6 KOs) scored a one-sided eight decision over Luciano "El Michoacano"Â￾ Perez (17-11-1, 15 KOs) by scores of 79-72, 79-72, 78-74.

In a battle of unbeaten welterweights, Aslanbek Kozaev (12-0, 4 KOs) outpointed Marcus Thompkins (5-1-1, 2 KOs) over six rounds by scores of 59-55, 59-55, 60-54.

I'm guessing Novikov beating Perez and Kozaev beating Marcus Thompson means it was a very good night for white boxers in Chicago!

Congrats to Andy. It looks like that loss a few years back was a fluke and he is progressing well under the tuteledge of Manny Steward. I look forward to him stepping the competition and rankings as well. Thank God we have boxing a sport where whites now dominate!!!

Here's a more a detailed report of his last fight -

Lee Looks Good In Beating Walker</font>

Andy Lee, Kronk Irish middleweight boxing star put on a master-class
performance against a tough and credible Michael Walker on Friday
evening in the main event of the ‘Windy City Fight Night' boxing
showcase at the UIC Pavilion, Chicago, IL.

Lee took control of the fight from the opening bell, with his
superior boxing skills successfully suppressing the come forward and
bullish style of Walker. Lee continually worked from behind the right
jab, feinting and countering to the body and head of his opponent.</span>The Kronk fighter like a lumberjack felling a tree; broke down
Walker in the middle rounds by patiently going about his work and
picking his punches with precision.

Sensing victory was in sight the southpaw Lee opened up with a
combination of hard and telling blows in the 8th round, before referee
Celestino Ruiz was forced to step in with 1 minute left in the round to
stop the fight and save Walker from any further punishment.

As Lee left the ring, he received rapturous applauses from Chicago's
Irish community and boxing fans around the arena that were enthused by
the skill and talent of the young 26 year old Irish fighter.

Following the fight Lee commented ‘Can I first of all pay credit to
the determination and heart shown by Michael Walker this evening; he
gave me a good fight. I kept my focus and composure throughout the fight
and I'm delighted with the stoppage win.'

Emanuel Steward, Lee's manager and trainer was clearly pleased by the
performance of his pupil ‘Andy is growing in confidence; he fought a
very smart and disciplined fight and demonstrated great maturity in the
ring. I was delighted when Andy stepped on the gas and got his opponent
out of there. It is now full steam ahead, we have another fight coming
up in two weeks time.''

Lee's record advances to 23 W (17ko) 1L and he will return to the
ring on Friday, October 2 headlining a boxing event promoted by Hitz
Boxing at the lavish ‘Venue' in the Horseshoe Casino, Hammond, Indiana.
The opponent for the fight will be veteran fighter Troy Lowry from Saint
Paul, Minnesota.

Tickets are available at the ‘Venue' box office, ticketmaster.com and
all Ticketmaster outlets. For more event information, visit

It's good to see him keeping active. There's not much point sitting out for months and hoping that a big fight comes around.

I'm surprised Vera agreed to a rematch. He made his name off of that one fight. I think Lee will pick him apart this time and force a stoppage in about 7-8 rounds.
