Thanks for the info about Pickering. Well he's only, what, 25? Some sprinters don't peak till later than that: Linford Christie did in his early 30s; and Marlon Devonish and Christian Malcolm running today are mid-30s, as is Kim Collins. Plus Craig's old rival Simeon Williamson came back today after years of injury and ran well, so..... But yeah, realistically I agree the odds appear not to favour him.
Gemili's story seems quite phenomenal. As far as I can gather, until six months ago he was a sporty 17 year old kid who preferred football to athletics, and didn't train seriously. Then he went and ran 10.08, as you do! And now he's qualified for his home Olympics. Btw it's clear he's of Middle Eastern, not white origin, but it's just nice to have a change from the usual, imo.
As for Chambers, I can kind of understand his outburst after winning the trials. Yes, he was a roider; but he's taken so much flak, for so many years from so many angles, with the BOA actually going to court to try to prevent him from running in the Olympics (something which smacked of vindictiveness - not to mention illegal restraint of trade - given that no other nation did the same, and the IOC even told the BOA it was opposed to the bylaw). It must have been pretty special for him to win, aged well into his 30s, forcing his way into the team and shoving it down the throats of all those in media, administration and elsewhere who tried to make his life difficult.
