Happy New Year to one and all.
As the indoor season gets under way in the northern hemisphere and U.S. particularly, the outdoor season opens in a flourish down here a bit earlier than usual for 2024.
January 13th (this coming Saturday) sees a meet called the Illawarra Track Challenge about 75 kms south of where I live. So I have plans to take a ride down there to watch. It'll be Rohan Browning's first run of the new season and there'll be a few decent sprinters there.
World athletics has raised the importance of 60m event as of this season so Browning and others will do 60m and 100m. Maybe we'll start getting some decent 60m times down here because till now we haven't run them seriously.
Shirvington's 6.52 (indoors) is our national record but Browning does have a still wind 6.55 outdoor time to his credit so who knows what may happen in good conditions?
Also, 11.25 (twice, run with a -0.5 and a 0.1 in years 2021 and 2022) shows Ella Connolly is a very decent sprinter who feels she hasn't quite reached her potential so has moved states to train with Browning and coach Murphy to get up to speed for this olympic year. I guess she, like others, will be thinking this could be their last hurrah before getting on with life in general and leaving track (and I think she'd like to push Zoe Hobbs when Zoe comes over here later in the season).
