2022 College Football Week 8

Week 8 starts tonight with a Sun Belt game - Ga State vs App State - Tucker Gregg is the main attraction. He still has a shot to hit the 1k rushing yard mark if he gets enough carries in the second half of the season.

Looking ahead to the weekend Iowa faces Ohio State. I doubt the Hawkeyes discovered offense during the bye week but the defense should pose a challenge. Big time game for Moss, DeJean and the rest of the defense.

I just watched the last 2 possessions of Georgia State and there was a different running back on each possession, neither of whom was Tucker Gregg.

since the opening drive where he had 6 carries for 40 yards (a long of 22) and a touchdown, Gregg hasn’t touched the ball. however, two running blacks have combined for 8 carries for 21 yards (a long of 10) and no touchdowns.

the scattershot black quarterback has had a terrific half running the football, though: 11 carries for 95 yards (a long of 26) and a touchdown. but he’s been inept in the passing game, as he’s only 6-12 for 38 yards.

Georgia State hasn’t allowed Gregg to touch the ball again since that opening drive of the second half (he had 22 yards on 2 carries). the result? ZERO first downs, ZERO points, and now another turnover.

App State has scored 21 unanswered points and are knocking on the door again after intercepting the scattershot black quarterback.

with less than a minute left in the quarter, GA State finally remembers they have a playmaker and hand him the ball. the results: 31 yards on 3 carries (a long of 27).

App State has scored 28 straight ... maybe GA State will continue to feed Gregg the ball. their black quarterback is 0-5 passing in the second half. LOL

you can’t overestimate stupid. no touches for Gregg as the 4th quarter begins play, and the drive stalls after two ineffective (that’s saying it kindly) runs by the black quarterback. fortunately their White kicker gets some points on the board.

LOL. inept is too mild a word! he’s gone the entire second half without completing a single pass attempt (0-7, so far).

meanwhile, Tucker Gregg, who has 3 separate runs for over 20 yards in this game, has been frozen out by his own team ... he’s only had 5 carries in the second half, two of which have gone for 21 and 27 yards respectively.

App State, trying to run out the clock late in the fourth quarter, goes with 5-straight runs using a White tailback. in-state sophomore Anderson Castle delivers: 5 carries for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Anderson Castle had 2 more carries on their next possession, as App State ran the clock out. everyone knew what was coming, yet he STILL gained positive yards: 4 and 21 yards. so despite only getting up the gut runs, his talent was revealed.

Castle finished the game with 7 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown. not bad for the “4th-stringer.”

not sure where to put this, but since it’s the week 8 thread, i guess it’s fitting to post the mid-season all-American teams here ...

at any rate, all the “experts” have released their picks for mid season honors, and surprisingly several of our guys are getting more notice than i expected. also not surprisingly, the efforts to hype black quarterbacks continues unabated.

perhaps most noteworthy is that the two first-team safeties (graded by the guys at PFF) in the nation play for our team:

Safety: Quinn Schulte, Iowa Hawkeyes

Quinn Schulte has been a leader of Iowa’s elite defense. He’s allowed just a 38.4 passer rating when targeted this season. For context, throwing the ball at the ground every play would generate a 39.6 passer rating. Schulte’s five forced incompletions are also tied for the most among Power Five safeties.

Safety: Jack Howell, Colorado State Rams

Jack Howell comes from a very athletic family. His father, John, won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a safety. His older sister, Jaelin, won the Hermann Trophy both in 2020 and 2021 while at Florida State, which is given to the nation’s best women’s soccer player. She now plays for Team USA.

Jack can do it all on passing downs. His coverage grade (87.8) is the fifth-best in the country at safety, while his pass-rush grade (89.8) ranks fourth-best. In fact, he’s the only safety in the FBS with 80.0-plus grades in both facets.

additionally, the PFF guys named Iowa State sophomore Beau Freyler as their third-team safety and Iowa sophomore Cooper DeJean as their third-team slot corner/flex.

other (perhaps surprising?) names appearing sprinkled amongst the lists are Arkansas junior linebacker Drew Sanders and Purdue wideout Charlie Jones.

The Alabama transfer -- and a player the Tide could use right now on defense -- moved to inside linebacker at Arkansas and has been a force for the Hogs. His defensive coordinator, Barry Odom, says the 6-5, 233-pound junior is playing at an "elite" level, and Sanders' numbers back up those words. He has 7.5 tackles for loss, including 6.5 sacks, and has forced three fumbles. He ranks fourth in the SEC with 63 total tackles.

one of the pregame commentators (the former head coach of LSU) talked about how Iowa’s defense was “one of the best coached defenses for the last ten years or so, but that secondary just doesn’t have the speed and athleticism to compete with Ohio State’s receivers.”
