Guliyev in the final!

Guliyev looked great yet again. Whether or not he medals will depend heavily on whether Van Niekerk recovers from all his racing. But Guliyev won his semifinal and given the time and wind, he remains, as I said weeks ago, a dark horse for the gold. Three guys posted faster semis--barely--but two of those had heavy winds at their back, and Guliyev did not.



Bosse, by the way, is the feel good story of the games. Great guy. Funny, humble, unaffected. Check out the IAAF interview on Youtube.

As for LeMaitre, he's looking better. Cross your fingers and hope he's running himself into shape. If he had come into these championships in perfect health, he'd be in the podium mix, for sure.

I can't watch it live during the week but just noticed Lemaitre got a real bad break. He posted the eighth fastest time but since they choose the top two in each race and then the next two fastest he got left out in the cold. His time was significantly faster than the worm who slipped in.

I have never liked this format as wind gauges mostly determine the two non automatic qualifiers, which is straight luck. At least in the old 2 semifinal top 4 format if you finished 4th you knew you advanced.

Yes he went out like a bat out of hell and held on down the stretch. This championships have had quite a few mild upsets, hopefully this keeps up as chalk wins aren't the most thrilling thing to see.

I remember Michael Johnson talking about working on a faster turnover whenever he ran the 200. Van Niekerk looked like he was a gear too slow to be a factor in the final in two days. It could be Guliyev battling the Trinidadian and Young with maybe Malakawla in the mix for a medal too.

it looked to me that Guliyev was well controlled and ran his own race. We can't know what's left in his tank for the final but I loved the way he marched off out of the arena and politely waved away the interviewer. It seemed to say "I've not finished the office work yet".
Anyway, it's hard to see him missing a medal of some sort.
Makwala will be raring to go. Does Richards have another fast one in him? Will Van Niekerk be fully rested again?
There's no dead certainty here

As long as Guliyev medals I will be happy. Yes I'm sad Lematire didn't make it but he gave it his
all. So close. It's all about Ramil. He has been amazing all year. I hope he has one more really fast
race left in him. I think he does. It the weather is descent I see him running a time around 20 seconds
flat to make the medal stand. The question is what medal will he earn. Time will tell. Good luck Ramil.

Ramil looked very confident after the race..... in my opinion, it looked like he wasn't pushing at all at the end.

Yes that was the speculation on IAAF feed I saw on Youtube. That's one less medal threat for Schipper in the 200 if this is true.

Interestingly, just like in the Men's 200m semi-finals, all the best white sprinters are in the same heat of the women's semi-final.

quite obvious as to why, cant have more than 1 or 2 whites make the finals..can we? On a different note, my daughter has noticed at each medal ceremony where an american has gold the flag does not drop like the others almost like it is still furled..coincidence? Guees we will see during P Francis's gold medal ceremony today. Enquiring minds want to know...hehehehe

a fairytale to him but well deserved. You could write a book about his last 10 years.
I hope he can command lots of appearance fees now - and he's learning English (i saw him interviewed) which will help immensely.

I notice all the times in all events today were very moderate. Maybe lots of still heavy air in London atm
Props to Van Niekerk for a brave showing and very nearly the big double - humble and disciplined guy
