2015 BYU Cougars

The Brigham Young University Cougars have started 18, 16, 15, 16, 16, 16, 14, 12, and 14 whites since 2005, followed by last year's piddling sum of 9 (or 8, going strictly by last season's camp projections). This year looks to continue the trend into historical non-whiteness for a private school founded on the niche religion of a small group of whites. Polynesians are prominent and may soon comprise a majority of the roster... very strange. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall has led the team since 2003 and has refused lucrative contract offers over the years due to his professed Mormon faith. I don't know when or what flipped the switch for him exactly in terms of purging white players from his roster - perhaps one of his Polynesian coordinators?


This team is still one to turn your dials to because of superstar quarterback Taysom Hill. Back from injury, he looks to lead a serious Heisman campaign as the most prolific white dual-threat QB since perhaps Tim Tebow. Hill can pad his gaudy stats by tossing to his pair of white receivers Nick Kurtz and Mitch Mathews. Although Kurtz is slightly more tenured, the 6'6 senior Mathews has a good shot at an NFL roster thanks to his size. Senior running back Nate Conner has a decent chance to poach carries after the recent injury of the anointed black starter.

Defensively, the Cougars are a snooze-fest assembly of Polynesians who have seen the light of 1. the prophet John Smith 2. the prospect of free college and 3. the prophecy of high seats at the racial hierarchy table. Not necessarily in that order.

Sophomore Micah Hanneman is an intriguing defensive back who projects to start at corner this season and beyond.

I don't care to comment much on the Mormon faith. It's important to note that many of the white starters are serious Mormons, whose religious instruction sends them on a mission to some third-world country to proselytize and perform general community service, i.e. constructing simple buildings. This hiatus from academic and athletic pursuits still falls within the NCAA guidelines. I think the difference between a 24 yr old and a 21 year old can be substantial. This works in favor of white Cougars players and contributes to some of their success against bigger programs.

Many of the non-whites do not feature this distinction (I did not study the official roster but did not count any among scanning initially). Some Polynesian players may be "saved" (converted to Mormonism) around high school age on the basis of eventually playing college football. I don't know and don't care to investigate further: I'm just suggesting that possibility as a recruiting pipeline to big dumb athletic prospects from far-off lands.

Their Cable TV contract with Disney-owned BSPN is when there was a noticeable change in their "recruiting philosophy". I'm suspecting some sort of "diversity" clause in that contract, seeing how much Disney-owned BSPN has radically changed over the past ten years to essentially become the MSNBC of Sports.

When they never even offered in-state 5-star MLB prospect Porter Gustin (a Mormon also, I believe) last year even after he publicly stated that he would accept an offer from them over anyone else (and he had a list the size of my arm, all big schools too...ending up at USC), then it became over-the-top obvious (to me) that they were constrained by some sort of diversity clause.

I suspect it's simply getting harder and harder to field majority white teams. No coach wants to be called a "racist" for starting 18 pale faces. It's becoming almost impossible to have such a high percentage of white starters even at BYU. That speaks volumes.

If that's the case then these college coaches truly are pathetic and worthy of nothing but contempt. Who cares if you are accused of being a racist. You're going to be accused of being one anyway. May as well do the right thing and play white players. I mean, anyone with any self respect these days shouldn't be bullied into doing something like not recruiting white players just because you might be called a racist.

BYU with only 8-9 white starters is truly pathetic...

And I don't think Boise State is going to be much better.

Looks like Senior walk-on (yep, still no scholarship for the White player even with all of his loyalty to the BYU program and obvious skill) is now a co-starter at RB.

I hope Taysom Hill has a bounce back year. He is the most exciting dual threat qb in the country. Mitch Matthews has a shot at 1k yards receiving this year and it's great to see a walk on white rb getting a shot at running the ball.

The defensive side of the ball is pathetic. Like many of the other western state teams they seem to be intent on recruiting polys rather than white players. I'm not a huge fan of the headcoach and his recruiting history but Heretic's insight on the bspn/Disney TV connection is interesting and that may have an effect on the color of recruiting.

Hill's style of play does lend itself to being more open to injury. I hope he plays smarter as well and realized his offensive line probably isn't the most reliable.

Sporting News list RT-Brad Wilcox (6'-7" 305) as a starter...as well as D-End's Graham Rowley & Remington Peck...but doesn't list CB Hanneman starting

& don't sleep on WR-Mitch Jergens (had 7-107-2 vs Cal & 4-87-1 vs. Memphis in Bowl game) and WR-Colby Pearson (81 yard TD vs. Boise St)

The Poly-invasion astounding...(count 8 starters out of 22?) is there another FBS team with as many? Could be a diversity clause in the ESiN/Disney contract?? Wouldn't totally surprise me.

Can't wait to see CB-Micah Hanneman! Freshman DB Zayne Anderson is opening some eyes in camp & DB Chris Badger should get some playing time...

Hopefully the 5'-9" Tailback Nate Carter will continue to make the most of his opportunities(6.3 avg per carry last season)

Taysom Hill is one of my favorite players in CFB! He is electric! runs like a RB...His passing has greatly improved! Has to stay healthy for BYU to have a chance...opening games with Nebraska, Boise St, UCLA & Michigan won't be easy!

6'-6" WR Mitch Mattherws led the team with 73 catches/922 yards..should get a look in the NFL too!

Very good article on true Freshman (walk on, of course), Scott Huntsman, who has already moved up to being a second string OLB. His high school coach had connections with the BYU coach that was recruiting him and had to pretty much beg him to just give the kid a look. I guess that's what they call "White Privilege".

Of course the reason the BYU coach went to this high school to begin with was to recruit a couple of "real" athletes, one that I believe chose another school, and another one that committed to BYU but has since been indicted on an Assault and Battery charge. BYU has not rescinded their offer to him. Perhaps that's what they mean by "upside" or "Black Lives Matter".

BYU released their official depth chart for the season-opener at Nebraska yesterday, and there were some interesting tidbits. (as an aside, the depth chart will likely be affected as BYU hasn't made public which players will be suspended for the opener for the brawl in last season's Miami Bowl.)

here are the officially-listed White starters (9 in all, a disappointingly low total):

QB - Taysom Hill
HB (basically the slot receiver) - Mitchell Juergens, now a scholarship athlete
WR - Mitch Mathews
WR - Nick Kurtz (co-starter with the aptly named Devon Blackmon)
TE - Tanner Balderee
LT - Ryker Mathews
LG - Kyle Johnson

DE - Logan Taele
Field Corner - Micah Hannemann (this is a pleasant development, as the field corner is the team's top cover man and usually the fastest defensive back.)


Nate Carter, who was recently (and finally) awarded a scholarship, is listed as the back-up tailback, so expect him to get plenty of touches. Tanner Mangum is the backup quarterback, and hopefully he won't, as Taysom Hill is an elite talent.

Kurt Henderson and Colby Pearson are backup wideouts, and Bryan Sampson is the backup tight end.

depressingly, the backup o-line is about as diverse as the starting unit.

defensively, true freshman walk-on Scott Huntsman is the back-up strongside linebacker. it wouldn't surprise me if the starting job is his sooner rather than later. Austin Heder and Rhett Sandlin are the backups at the two inside linebacker spots.

Graham Rowley and Remington Peck are the top two backups at defensive end, and should see plenty of snaps. Matt Hadley is the backup kat safety.

BYU starts off the season with a brutal four games in September: at Nebraska, Boise State, at UCLA, and at Michigan. we will find out real quick like if they are legit or not.
