Hall of Famer
Great news for fans of the “Die Mannschaft,†as their evergreen striker, Miroslav Klose, appears to have recovered from his muscle tear and was included on the German squad headed to Brazil. A single goal will tie the German stalwart with Brazil’s Ronaldo de Lima for the all-time goal scorer in World Cup Finals history with 15 goals (and two goals would make him the sole record holder). From BBC Sport…
I’ve heard that Low’s squad is moving away from having a lone striker, so we’ll see if Klose gets an opportunity to score.
Unfortunately, the 30 players chosen for the “provisional†German squad (soon to be cut down to 23) also included 3 non-whites, which I’ve bolded below…
Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer, Roman Weidenfeller, and Ron-Robert Zieler
Defenders: Jerome Boateng, Erik Durm, Kevin Grosskreutz, Benedikt Howedes, Mats Hummels, Marcell Jansen, Philipp Lahm, Per Mertesacker, Marcel Schmelzer, and Shkodran Mustafi*
Midfielders: Lars Bender, Julian Draxler, Matthias Ginter, Leon Goretzka, Mario Gotze, Andre Hahn, Sami Khedira, Toni Kroos, Max Meyer, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Marco Reus, Andre Schurrle, and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Forwards: Miroslav Klose, Kevin Volland, and Lukas Podolski.
*It should be noted that Shkodran Mustafi is of Albanian descent, but certainly appears as white as any of the German players. He may not even make the roster…
CAPTION: Mustafi - A True White Muslim
We’ve discussed this at length over the years, and I suppose the “general consensus†is that the talented (yet ball-hogging) Turk, Mesut Ozil, comes close to “passing†for an incredibly ugly white person, but to any trained observer, he clearly isn’t white…
CAPTION: Bug-Eyed Turk
Like Ozil, the half-Tunisian midfielder, Sami Khedira, almost passes the “eye test,†but falls short due to his Arabic hook-nose, soulless black eyes, and dark olive complexion…
CAPTION: Racial Amalgam
This roster could have been much worse, as Negroes such as Antonio Rüdiger, Dennis Aogo, and Sidney Sam, or Asian-looking Turks such as Ilkay Gundogan, were all mercifully left off the roster.
There is a good chance that all three of the non-whites who made the roster could be featured in the starting eleven, but Ozil is the only definite. With so many talented German midfielders (Draxler, Gotze, Kroos, Reus, Schurrle, etc) in addition to long-time starter, Bastian Schweinsteiger, “Ugly Sami†Khedira could be a spectator. Likewise with the slow-poke Negro, Jerome Boateng, who could be replaced by Durm, Hummels, Mertesecker, Grosskreutz, or Schmelzer.
As for the other national teams in the WC Finals, I suppose the only other squads worth rooting for are: Croatia, Russia, Belgium, Australia, Spain, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Bosnia, and to a lesser extent, Argentina and Uruguay. Like Germany, all of these “white†teams (with the exception of Russia and Bosnia) feature non-whites in their starting lineup or on their roster. Obviously, teams such as the USA, Netherlands, France, and England could feature up to a half-white starting eleven, with blacks, mulattos, and Muslims comprising the other half.
Germany striker Miroslav Klose could become the record scorer in World Cup finals history after being selected for the tournament in Brazil. Klose is set to go to his fourth finals after being included in Germany's provisional 30-man squad. The 35-year-old needs two more goals to beat the record total of 15 held by former Brazilian forward Ronaldo. "Miro always hits top form at tournaments. It will almost certainly be his last," said coach Joachim Low. Klose scored five times in the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals and four in the 2010 tournament in South Africa, when Germany were beaten semi-finalists. The Lazio striker shares second place in the list of all-time World Cup finals scorers with compatriot Gerd Muller. The pair are also joint top scorers for Germany with 68 goals each. Klose has been restricted to 22 appearances for Lazio this season but has scored seven times in Serie A and Low expects him to make an impact in Brazil.
