2014-2015 College Basketball Season

I love college basketball, and with it starting this week, I figured I'd get the thread started. For those who have been turned off a bit by college football season and the near complete lack of whites at QB or any non caste position in the Top 15 or so, college basketball season will be a breath of fresh air. Wisconsin and Arizona, who will start 4 and 2 white guys respectively, start off in the Top 5. I think Wisconsin's and Arizona's combined white starters are more than 3 out of the top 4 college football teams right now!! Combined, Miss. State, Alabama, and FSU start 6 white guys out of 66, compared with 6 out of ten for these two schools. In addition, Gonzaga starts off at #13 with 3 white starters. Teams that feature whites as the go-to guys are Syracuse and Wichita State, with Michigan, Virginia, and Harvard playing a few as well. Just outside the Top 25, we have Iowa (who may have 4-5 white starters) and Stanford (who has a lot of white guys on their team too).

I'll look at a few of our guys/teams this year to watch out for (and there are a few of them)... Jimmy, Freethinker, celtic, or others can add to my previews as well, especially going more in depth with some of the teams I didn't get to or missed. I'll be adding to these later as well.



Arizona

After their loss to the Badgers in the Elite Eight, the Wildcats return just about everybody from their team last year. Arizona will feature two white men in their starting lineup, and they're both really good. Athletic 7 footer Kaleb Tarczewski will be even better this year coming off a much improved sophomore season. PG TJ McConnell is the guy that makes this team run. He can fill the state sheet in a variety of ways besides scoring, like dishing out 11 assists in the Wildcats' exhibition finale. Off the bench for Arizona will be 7 foot Serbian freshman Dusan Rustic, and sophomore guard Elliot Pitts. I know White Lightning likes the Wildcats, so he may be better suited to talk about these guys than I am. But nonetheless, Arizona's definitely a team to root for this year.

Wisconsin

CF's favorite team is also favorite to cut down the nets this year after a great run to the Final Four last year. They'll look to have 4 white starters again this year, with a couple white guys off the bench. Losing Brust will hurt, but this team still has a ton of great talent. That talent starts with big man Frank Kaminsky. Kaminsky is very athletic and will score both inside and outside for the Badgers. In addition he'll also be feared on the defensive end of the court. His emergence last year was HUGE for Wisconsin, and now Kaminsky will be looking to take his team all the way this year. Joining Kaminsky in the front court will be equally talented forward Sam Dekker. Getting Dekker's commitment to Wisconsin was big, and he hasn't disappointed. Dekker is an elite athlete and he plays like it. Both Dekker and Kaminsky will be in the NBA soon. In the back court will be guards Josh Gasser and Bronson Koenig. Gasser has hit some huge shots for the Badgers over the years, and he'll be looking do to more of the same. Koenig steps into Brust's starting spot after being a pivotal role player as a freshman. The Badger's white rotation players should include Duje Dukan, sophomore guard Zak Showalter (who's been described as one of the most athletic players on the team), and potentially freshman small forward Ethan Happ.

I'll mention a couple of guys to look out for this season as well.

Trevor Cooney - Syracuse
The only white contributor for the Orange may also just be their best player. Cooney is an amazing shooter who had some huge cames for Syracuse last year. He's also very athletic (this may surprise some announcers/DWFs) and can jam the ball when he wants to. Although he shoots a lot of threes, he can also drive it to the hole as well. I'm hoping he takes the next step this year and asserts himself as the go-to guy for Syracuse. As I've mentioned, watching Cooney tear it up as the only white guy for the Orange is certainly a better alternative to watching the majority of College Football's Top 25.

Ron Baker - Wichita State

This kid is great. Since I began watching him closer last year, he hasn't disappointed. Ron Baker should be the go-to scorer for the Shockers. He is simply a joy to watch. He can score from driving to the hoop or knocking down a three. He's going to be in the NBA someday as well. Baker was second on the team last year with 13 PPG. He can also play some defense, being 2nd on the team last year with 51 steals. I look forward to watching him light it up this year. If you didn't know his name before this season, you sure will after it.

Ryan Arcidiacono - Villanova

Arcidiacono is the floor general for the Wildcats. He averaged around 10 PPG last year, played the most minutes of any Wildcat, and easily had the most assists on the team. He also had a 2.5 assist to TO ratio as well. I haven't watched Villanova enough to really say much about this kid, but I'm hoping he makes some improvements this year.

Gonzaga is going to be a team well worth rooting for also. The Zags were always a CF favorite, but backslid for a few years. This year 10 of the 17 players on the roster are white, and the rotation will feature 6-2 senior Kevin Pangos, 7-1, 288 pound junior Przemek Karnowski from Poland, 6-8 senior Kyle Draganis, 6-10 Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer, and 6-10, 231 pound freshman Domantas Sabonis, who is the son of Lithuanian legend Arvydas Sabonis. They also have 7-1, 294 pound soph Ryan Edwards on the roster. Not sure how talented he is, but the kid is huge and should be able to learn a thing or two playing behind Karnowski.

I am as well!! I think that Gonzaga has some serious potential at a deep run this year... they'll be fun to watch!


Anyway, I'll post a couple more teams that bear watching...

Stanford

Like other former Duke assistants, it appears that Johnny Dawkins has been recruiting fairly like Coach K used to, and as a result, there'll be a few white players to watch this year for the Cardinal, with 8 of the 14 scholarship players currently on the roster are white. It looks as if there'll be two white starters: 6-11 senior center Stefan Nastic, and Forward Rosco Allen (whom Freethinker brought up in the other thread), who will finally get a chance to prove himself after being injured for most of his college career. Nastic should be more involved this year with the graduation of Stanford's best forwards from last year, and will be counted on to score some, as well as do the dirty work inside. I'm not sure on Allen, but hopefully he plays well so we can all get to see him in action. Off the bench, there looks to be three white players who will contribute: Junior guard Christian Sanders, who is also back from injury, and two freshmen in PG Robert Cartwright and forward Michael Humphrey. Stanford does have two talented senior guards in Randle and Brown, so Sanders and Cartwright may find minutes hard to come by at first, by Humphrey should be in the front court rotation. With 5 white guys in the 9 man rotation, Stanford is definitely a team to root for.

Vanderbilt

After a couple of years playing with mostly all-black teams, it looks like the Commodores will have a few white guys seeing the floor again this year, with two of them starting, a welcome reprieve from the rest of the SEC. G/F Luke Kornet will be one of the starters. Having watched him last year, I know he shoots the 3, but will also battle inside. A guy to be potentially excited about is incoming freshman Riley LaChance. He's started in both exhibition games for Vandy and even led the team in scoring in one of them with 24 points off of a 6-9 effort from three. Remember his name; he may turn into a good one when it's all said and done. The Commodores also have 3 white players that should see time off the bench in guard Nathan Watkins, and senior forwards Shelby Moats and Josh Henderson. A welcome sight to see Vandy playing some white guys again.

We had a few good performances from our guys on opening night: Greyson Allen had a nice debut for Duke as they blew away an overmatched Presbyterian team. He was 2nd on the team in scoring with 18 points, to go with 3 assists and 3 steals.

Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis both got their Gonzaga careers off to a great start, with Wiltjer leading the team with 18 points in a blowout win, and Sabonis scoring 14 and getting 8 reobunds. Kevin Pangos was also 2nd on the team with 16 points.

Tyler Haws and the all-white BYU starting lineup got their season started off right with a win over Long Beach State. Haws led the way with 21 points. Wake Forest transfer Chase Fischer had a nice debut as well, with 17 points and 5 assists. Skyler Halford added 18 points off the bench.

For Maryland, Jake Layman had a good game, with 16 points, 6 assists, and 9 boards.

Arizona blew out Mt. St. Mary's by over 20 points, and Tarczewski and McConnell both had good games. Tarczewski had a double double with 10 points and 10 boards, while adding 3 blocks. McConnell filled up the stat sheet, with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals!

Stefan Nastic really had a great game for Stanford last night against Wofford, leading the way with a game high 26 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and a block!!

Frank the Tank got started off good for the Badgers, with 16 points and 11 rebounds, good for team highs. Dekker was 2nd on the team with 15 points in the Badgers' easy win over Northern Kentucky. The Badgers had 3 white starters, as Koenig came off the bench.

Thanks WL!! I'm glad you enjoy reading them. I'm trying to keep up with all the action while others are busy, and I'm hoping the thread will pick up a bit as the early tournaments begin next weekend.

I agree! We have a lot of guys/teams this year to watch out for. This should easily be better than college football season this year. I'll have another update for tonight and a couple more teams to watch this year.

Here's two more teams I really enjoyed watching in their first games:'

BYU

A perennial CF favorite doesn't disappoint this year, with 5 white starters, and one of the best players in the country in dynamic guard Tyler Haws. They love running and playing up tempo, and when they're on, they are fun to watch. As I mentioned, Tyler Haws is a great scorer who will score in a variety of ways. With a big year, he may pass Jimmer as the Cougar's all-time scoring leader. Joining Haws is perhaps BYU's most important player: Kyle Collinsworth. Easing his way back in from a torn ACL, this guy does it all for BYU: he scores, rebounds, plays defense, and dishes out assists. With those two, Wake Forest transfer Chase Fischer also packs a scoring punch in BYU's back court. BYU's weakness will be in the front court again this year, especially with Erik Mika off to an LDS mission. Nate Austin and Luke Worthington are the two white starters, with Isaac Neilson helping out off the bench. With Austin prone to getting into foul trouble, Neilson will be important this year. Also going off the bench is guard Skyler Halford, who also will provide a scoring option for the Cougars. He also distributes the ball efficiently as well. More often than not, BYU will likely have four guards out on the floor to make up for their lack of depth inside. Regardless, this team will be a joy to watch this year. If you like fast, exciting basketball with a bunch of great white athletes, catch some BYU games this year!!!

Butler

A year after joining the Big East, the Bulldogs are ready to take the next step to the upper echelon of the league. The Bulldogs have three white starters, with 1-2 more contributing off the bench. When one talks about Butler, it starts with prolific guard Kellen Dunham. Dunham is a great scorer with range; he can hit from anywhere on the floor. He's not just a three point shooter either; he can drive the lane as well and create his own shot at times as well. Freethinker mentioned him in the other thread, and I think Dunham is in for a great year this year, and I also think 20 PPG isn't out of the question. Joining Dunham in the back court is PG Alex Barlow. Barlow is an underrated player who's worked a lot on his game during the off season. I've heard he's improved his shooting, which would be huge for the Bulldogs. Barlow does a bit of everything; he's a great defender, can rebound very well despite only being 5'11, and can dish out assists as well. With backup PG Jackson Aldridge out with a rolled ankle for a bit, Barlow is a very important player for Butler. The third starter is forward Andrew Chrabascz, who played very well last year as a freshman in the Big East. He's a great player around the rim, and I'm hoping he takes a leap forward this year in his production. One of the key guys off the Bulldog's bench is Indiana transfer Austin Etherington. He looked to be pretty good his in his first game as a Bulldog today against Maine, and hopefully has a great last two years of his career after being screwed by Crean. As I mentioned above, Jackson Aldridge, who would've got a few minutes per game, is out for a few weeks with an ankle injury. I'm hoping we see these guys in the Tournament again come March!!

And I just wanted to point out a player many of you may not have heard of. I just know about him from watching some of the WCC games he's played against Gonzaga the last couple of years. He's a great scorer, but gets little recognition because of the team he plays on. This guy is San Diego's Johnny Dee. He averaged nearly 17 PPG last year, and through two games this year, is at 23.5 PPG right now. He shot the rock at 42% from three last year, and will be key to any success that USD has this year. I'm hoping he can make a run at the NCAA tourney this year, so that some people will actually get to see him play.

Good stuff Jack!

Creighton is very White friendly once again, especially when you compare them to the other Big East teams. They start 3 of our guys. Senior center Will Artino will lead the way and he's averaging 17 points and 9 rebounds after the first 2 games. Joining the starting lineup are 2 freshman, guard Ricky Kreklow and forward Toby Hegner. They are both averaging double figures so far. Off the bench is dynamic shooter Isaiah Zierden, who looks to have a much bigger role this season. He's averaging 17 points so far. Post McDermott doesn't look so bad after-all.

Another team who's been a CF favorite in resent years is New Mexico. After losing Cameron Bairstow and Alex Kirk to the NBA it would have seemed like the Lobos would lose my interest, but not with the explosive scoring Cullen Neal stepping up. Only a sophomore, the 6'-4" coaches son has moved into the starting lineup and has gone off so far. He's averaging 24.5 points per game and shooting it at 53% from 3 point range. Throw in 4 assists per game and I'd say he's off to a nice start. Returning in the backcourt is Aussie Hugh Greenwood. The senior is a streaky shooter but great rebounder for a 6'-3" player. 8.5 boards a game so far.

This is the perfect segue into mentioning Bryce Alford of UCLA. Bryce grew up in New Mexico as his father Steve, the current head coach of UCLA, was the head coach of New Mexico at the time. Bryce, like Cullen Neal, is also a sweet shooting sophomore guard who came off the bench as a freshman. Now a starter he's averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 assists per game. He's got a bright future.

The other guy I'm excited about on UCLA is highly recruited freshman 7'-0" center, Thomas Welch. The big man will come off the bench for now. He had a great first game and a quiet second one. I wonder how he'll develop as the season progresses. UCLA gives a few minutes to another Whitey off the bench, Hungarian freshman Gyorgy Goloman. I honestly don't know anything about this guy.

A game every CFer should watch: SMU vs. Gonzaga at 11 PM Eastern on ESPN2 tonight. A huge early season caste matchup: the white friendly Zags against Larry Brown's all-black team. If you want to see some great white athletes, tune in!!

I hope Iowa can get into the top 25 or maybe even higher. They round out my top 3 favorite teams with Gonzaga and Wisconsin.

Just a quick note, USC and Indiana are 2 teams to keep an eye on. USC starts 2 White guys, one being Katin Reinhardt who's very good. Indiana only starts 1 White guy, transfer Nick Zeisloft, but their entire 2nd team seems to be all-saltine.

On the other hand, I think I've discovered the most disgusting Caste team in D1, New Mexico State. Now there are many teams that are all-black but these guys take the cake. They've imported negros from all around the globe. I guess the American blacks don't wanna play in New Mexico as it must lack in good soul food and strip clubs. Here's some of their roster: 5 darkies from Toronto (4 blacks and 1 giant Indian), 2 negros from France, 1 negro from South Africa and 1 from Cameroon. There is only 1 player from New Mexico, the lone Whitey, and he's taking a medical redshirt after redshirting as a freshman. This team is pathetic. :thumbdown:

Ron Baker didn't disappoint as Wichita State blew away Memphis today, leading all players with 21 points, 6 assists, 5 boards, and 1 block. Austin Nichols had a good game in the losing effort, with 10 points and 6 blocks.

Duke has basically become a 2nd Kentucky this year. I'm hoping Michigan State is able to come back and beat them tonight. Screw the Blue Devils.

I hate to keep repeating myself, but watch Gonzaga!!! These guys are so good - they're demolishing St. Joeseph's 46-10(!) with a bit of time left in the first half. They are great offensively; they really share the ball, and everybody who sees the floor can score for them. They also play some tough defense, and rebound very well as a team. It's been mentioned - they use 5 white players in their rotation - Pangos, Karnowski, Wiltjer, Dranginis, and Sabonis. I know it's early in the year, but these guys definitely look like a threat to cut down the nets come tournament time.

Creighton, whom I mentioned before, is already doing some damage. Yesterday they knocked off #18 ranked Oklahoma while starting 4 White guys!!

Isaiah Zierden was moved into the lineup and responded with 11. Freshman Toby Hegner also had 11. The only black guy, Chatman, did lead the way with 17 points but it looks like a team effort from the box score. It's worth noting that Creighton was down by 11 at halftime so they showed good fortitude to comeback.

In the losing effort, forward Ryan Spangler had a double double (11 points, 11 rebounds).

Wisconsin eventually pulled away from Green Bay last night, and Frank Kaminsky had a great game: 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 blocks!

Due to Gonzaga absolutely destroying St. Joeseph's, there weren't very many high scorers in their 94-42 win. Domantas Sabonis had a double double off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Karnowski almost had one with 11 points and 8 boards. In only 19 minutes, Pangos had 6 points, 6 assists, 5 boards, a steal, and a block.

Notre Dame coasted to an easy win over Coppin State last night. Pat Connaughton had a nice game with 8 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Martinas Geben came off the bench for 12 points and 6 boards.

Disappointed Iowa lost to highly ranked Texas after being up by 6 at halftime. Total 2nd half collapse, being outscored by 20. Aaron White had a great game nonetheless: 23 points, 8 boards and 2 steals. Connor Lammert starts for Texas but it seems he's only their for rebounding (8 boards) and defense. He only got to take 4 shots in 20 mins.

In a slight Caste win, Indiana upset #22 coal-black SMU. SMU is now 1-2 and won't be in the top 25 any longer. Nick Zeisloft had 10 points in only 16 minutes. 2 other Whites got minutes off the bench for the Hoosiers.

Hugh Greenwood, New Mexico: 24 points, 3 assists, 3 steals (BC who starts 3 Whites beat New Mexico who starts 2)

Pretty amazing the Notre Dame Basketball program has been more white friendly then the football program over the past decade or so.

That's about how long Coach Mike Brey has been there. He's always been very fair to white players; I don't remember a team where he hasn't had white players contributing/starting.

Kelly on the other hand, has proven to be a real caste stooge now that he's got a "high-profile" job. Another great thing about college basketball is there's no caste system in regards to positions; whites aren't excluded from any positions in college hoops like they are in football.

I noticed that as well, which really sucks. That's exactly what happened to them in their tournament game against Tennessee last year. For those who want to watch, Iowa will be playing Trevor Cooney and Syracuse in a few minutes on ESPN2. I'm hoping Iowa can have a nice bounce back game.

One tidbit about Texas A&M... in addition to Caruso, they also start true freshman Peyton Allen at guard. Today, he led the Aggies with 14 points in their win over College of Charleston. Caruso and Allen make the team fun to watch, as today they usually weren't on the bench for long stretches, playing 27 and 33 minutes respectively.

I have a bit of time today, so I thought I'd give give a quick recap of the weekend's college hoops action.


Saturday

Frank Kaminsky had another strong outing against Boise State, scoring 26 points, had 5 boards, 3 blocks, and 2 steals.



Even though Stanford lost to Duke, Stefan Nastic continued his strong performances, with 13 points and a game high 13 boards.


Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis both had strong games against an overmatched opponent, with Wiltjer getting 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Sabonis had 19 points and 2 rebounds.

Davidson may have lost to North Carolina 91-72, but it looks like they've got a great freshman in forward Peyton Aldridge. He had a game-high 25 points (9/16 shooting), and also pulled down 6 boards.

Notre Dame dispatched a very caste UMass team 81-68, with the Fighting Irish's white guards having solid games again. Pat Connaughton had 18 points and 5 boards (7 TOs though...) and sophomore Steve Vasturia had 7 points, 7 boards, 4 steals, and 2 assists.

Butler blew away an overmatched Loyola Maryland team 80- 39, so the scoring was pretty distributed throughout the team. Kellen Dunham had 13 points in 25 minutes.

Evan Bradds had a strong outing for Belmont (who have 5 white starters) against Western Kentucky, with a game-high 24 points and 8 boards in the Bruins' 64-63 win.

Sunday

In Notre Dame's close loss to Providence, Pat Connaughton had another solid game, with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. He was repeatedly praised by the announcers today for his athleticism as well. Vasturia had 11 points, 5 boards, and 2 assists.

Ron Baker led the way in Wichita State's blowout victory over Newman State. The dynamic guard had a game-high 18 points. G/F Evan Wessel had 7 points, 6 boards, and 3 assists as well.

We've had a couple of great performances by our athletes on the hardwood of late.

Isaac Haas, a 7'2 freshman, is having a great year for the Boilermakers so far. He comes off the bench, but he's a force. In the game against Grambling last week, he had 17 points, 6 boards, and two assists. He had another good game against K-State yesterday with 19 points and 6 boards in 20 minutes. He's no doubt still a bit raw, but he's gonna be a great one! I'm looking forward to getting back to cheering for Purdue again.

BYU lost a heart-breaker in double OT to San Diego State 92-87. I thought BYU played hard, and gave it all they had. Tyler Haws had a year-high 26 points and Kyle Collinsworth (perhaps BYU's most important player) had 21 points, 7 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals. BYU looks to have better depth in the front court this year, and I think they'll definitely be a better team than last year.

Craig Bradshaw had a nice game against for Belmont against Lipscomb, with 29 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

I'm hoping interest picks up a bit as the season goes on, as we have some fun guys and teams to watch this year.

Of course, the context of his militantly-racist prattle is that he wanted to avoid humiliating Savannah State, so he pulled his “real” starters and inserted white players. I hope that someday soon, this little bastard gets exactly what’s coming to him.

A huge win for Butler today as they knocked off #5 North Carolina 74-66 in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Bulldogs played some tough, tenacious defense that flustered North Carolina all day and dominated the Tar Heels on the glass, pulling down 27 offensive boards. No player had a better game than Alex Barlow. This kid was simply amazing today, effectively shutting down Marcus Paige (UNC's top scorer) while he was guarding him. Paige did finish with 18, but he got some of those after Barlow fouled out, with Barlow holding him to 5/17 from the field. Barlow was also tied for the team lead in scoring, with 17 points, to go with 5 boards and 3 assists. This kid is good. A total team effort today for the Bulldogs, with 4 players in double figures. Kellen Dunham had an off day shooting (3/17 - ouch!!) but still finished with 11 points.

Meanwhile, only one white kid saw the floor for the Tar Heels, for a single minute.


Another kid I want to mention is Maryland's Jake Layman. I got to watch him for awhile last night as the Terps upset nearly-all black Iowa State. Layman is a great athlete, can score from anywhere on the floor, and is very tough. The announcers last night were raving about his athleticism. He finished tied with a team-high 15 points, while pulling down 6 boards and dishing a couple of assists. He is very crucial to the Terps' success. The Terps use two white guys a lot, and it should be three when Evan Smotrycz gets back from injury.

Chase Fischer absolutely lit it up yesterday in Maui against Chaminade. He hit his first 8 threes and finished 10/13 from beyond the arc. He led the team with 30 points!! Haws, despite missing most of the 1st half with foul trouble, still got 19 points.

Good write up Jack. What a great upset for Butler over the caste Tar Babies. Butler looks like they're back. I am watching Gonzaga right now, up 14 on Georgia. Arvydas Sabonis is in the stands with his Slavic posse watching his kid play.

Edit: One of the black Georgia players just kicked one of the black Gonzaga players in the face as he was flying through the air. It was a totally dirty play. It was the Georgia players' 5th foul, so he already fouled out. Otherwise it would have warranted an automatic ejection.
