The weather is unusually sunny and dry, which along with wind is making Muirfield play very tough. Miguel Jiminez of Spain is leading after two rounds at -3, with eight other players under par, including Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood, Angel Cabrera and Tiger Woods. Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson are among other players in contention.

Woods has faded in the third and fourth rounds of recent majors, so hopefully that trend will continue. We need bigunreal to jinx him again by posting that he already has the tournament wrapped up.

Westwood manages to blow a 3 stroke lead in 2 holes, and now trails the Magic One by a stroke. Mickelson, as he always does, follows up a birdie with a bogey. Neither has a chance.

I continue to watch player after player missing fairways, missing makeable putts and having their balls roll long distances into sand traps. Meanwhile, Woods has his normal, supernatural luck- even the announcers were astonished when his ball magically stayed between 2 bunkers.

The players are rolling over and playing dead for Woods, just as they have for much of his career. Everyone else struggles except this one, magical afflete. The elements affect the others, but not him. Maybe an Asian will pop up from somewhere that isn't intimidated by his supernatural persona.

Yes Bigunreal is the cooler for Woods. I heard some of the usual suspects saying that Woods was even money to win this tournament before the 3rd round. The usual Woods hyperbole, but Woods seems like he can't run away and hide in majors anymore. Being two down with a round to go I would favour the field at about 4 to 1 against Woods.

Haha, that’s for sure. BU’s supernatural ability to jinx Woods has worked perfectly for every major championship (in which he was in contention on Saturday) since his post-scandal days back in 2009.

Woods has been hot-and-cold since his undeniably-dominant performance at “The Players Championship†back in May. During the “U.S. Open,†he played very well before wilting late Saturday and early Sunday. At “The Masters†back in April, he finished a mere 4 shots off the lead.

I wish this vile, club-tossing, spitting, cursing, whore-fornicating, penis-fantasizing (see his personal emails that leaked in 2008), pill-popping, arch-adulterating beast the very worst of luck in the final round, but from everything I’ve seen, he’s playing quite well and is certainly a threat to win…

All 14 of Woods' major wins have come when he was in the lead or tied for the lead after three rounds, so that's a good omen going into tomorrow, along with bigunreal proclaiming him the winner.

If Westwood falters, there are a lot of top players within a few strokes of Woods -- Adam Scott, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia among them. It would be a great story for any of them to win. Should be a fun final round (unfortunately live coverage starts at 3 in the morning Pacific time).

To the seeming regret of the announcers while I was watching, Phil Mickelson wins the British Open going away. Mickelson was the only golfer under par for the tournament. His closing round was the best of the match and he proved that once again he is the best golfer out there.

Phil wins it!! What an awesome final round for Phil, shooting a 66 -5 under par to win it. That's his 5th major now, and his 3rd different major title. He's definitely among the all time greats now. The 2014 US Open is going to be a huge event for Phil, I hope he can complete his career Grand Slam title there.

foobar75, as I watched Phil win and embrace his family at the end live, I thought the same thing. CM's nightmare and their panties in a dirty bunch. Phil's play on the 16th, 17th and 18th were incredible. He displayed steel iron confidence and will on those holes to seal the deal.

I deliberately didn't check any sports or news sources today, wanting to watch ABC's condensed encore three hour version of the final round starting at noon out here without knowing who won. And am I ever glad I did!!!!

That was just awesome, like a dream come true. Phil still has critics that call him a "choker," but he's won over 40 tournaments, a lot less than Woods, but I don't expect any golfer to reach that number for generations after Phil retires given how much parity there is in golf now. And Phil has now won 5 majors, which puts him in elite company all time. He's had a lot of close calls in majors, but he has great character and keeps putting himself in the hunt. There's a huge difference between what Mickelson's done in the majors compared to Greg Norman, Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie, other top golfers who consistently came close but couldn't seal the deal except for Norman's two British Open wins.

Phil's 2004 breakthrough Masters win was special, as was his 2010 win with his wife Amy there to greet him, weakened after months and months of radiation treatment for cancer, but this may be my favorite tournament after the 1986 Masters win by Jack Nicklaus at age 46. I'm so happy for Phil, a class act all the way and terrific role model who may be the most popular White athlete in America.

The post-tournament coverage is in agreement that this win solidifies Mickelson as an all-time great. Pretty significant given how tough (and unfair) the corporate media has been on Phil so many times.

Another fact to consider: Mickelson has 5 majors and 8 runner-up finishes in majors. Jack Nicklaus won 18 majors but was runner-up in 19 others. Jack had a reputation of being a ruthless closer while Phil has been called a lovable loser. In reality the discrepancy between them isn't that large, the main difference being that Nicklaus was first or second so many times. But that was a different era when several players dominated the sport along with Jack, which had been the norm in golf but no longer is. In today's game the difference in ability between the top player in the world and the 150th is much less than it ever was in the past. Woods had his time of singular domination, but it's been over for close to six years now.
